Thor: Ragnarok The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 5

Damn this is killing my hype :(

The thing is I love Waititis films and his humor, and obviously all MCU films are funny or try to be, but just it's all that's talked about with Ragnarok. Which you would think would be one of the darker MCU films

Yeah Ragnorok is a dark subject but I think they brought the stakes to zero and they just focused on ridiculous fun. It's a bizarre approach but it may work.

Or maybe they just want to keep the darker subjects hidden until we see the movie. Marvels lets out what they want to let out, Civil War trailers did not give away much of anything. Dr.Strange basically held things back and many went in blind, GOTG2 trailers have revealed nothing. Gunn has said nothing and does not want anything spoiled.

Thor 3 with all these new characters should be heavy. I doubt they are going to give away anything about the new characters, since Zemo, Freeman character, Spider-Man were rarely shown in promotions. Dr.Strange didn't mention Dormammu or much of Mordo changing. GOTG has yet to show Russell/Ego and other new characters.

Thor 3 will have some comedy of course but I don't think it will be a ton of it. This is the cosmic lead in to Avengers IW.

I don't know...I think it can be either dark or light. It would be very difficult to balance dark elements with the type of humor Taika has in his movies, it wouldn't mesh well

Maybe Feige and Waititi are just trolling the fans and its purposeful misdirect. I think Feige is more in tune with the fans than we think and is aware of the complaints when they come. I think he knows they went way too far with the comedy in TDW and fans were disappointed because of it. Think about it, every news piece of Ragnorak that comes out is about humor, like theyre purposely underscoring it. I think theyre maybe screwing with the fans so that we're pleasantly surprised how dark and serious the real film is.

Or......maybe I'm wrong and the movie really is just as comedic or more comedic than TDW. Lol

Eh, to be honest I just want it to be good :funny: whatever it is, if it works then it all that matters

Humour if used right doesn't take away from tension or lower the stakes. Humour is part of life, even in the darkest times.

Thank you. I personally don't give a crap how much humour is in it, I just want it to be good, which, with Waititi at the helm and the quality of a lot of the actors involved, I have total faith it will be.

So we're back to this again, huh?

I know, right? I'm so tired of the constant whining about 'humour'. Let's give it a rest already and wait until the movie is out before we judge. Ragnarok was never going to be an ultra-serious, gritty affair, Marvel made that abundantly clear from the get-go.

It's clear to me that a lot of the people who seem to want this to be a LotR rip-off (which incidentally had plenty of levity interspersed with the drama) have never read a silver age Thor comic in their life. Ragnarok is obviously drawing a lot of inspiration from Walt Simonson's 80's run and the art of Jack Kirby. That's one of the reasons I'm looking forward it so much, this feels like it's going to be classic, silver age Thor, much more than the first two films was. Bring it on. :woot:

The rumor for a long time ago was that the Thor Ragnarok script was very dark and that was one of the reasons why they decided to choose Taika Waititi to join the movie, (not only because he is a upcoming talent coming through the ranks but also a director with a distinct style of humor) so the movie could have a bit of levity to it.

All Marvel movies have humor. All of them. It's a winning formula. They always inject humor on their movies to break down the seriousness of the films and to smooth a lot of the edges. Fun is an integral part of the MCU. A lot of things can be forgiven in a movie with adding levity. Some directors are capable of adding decent humor(James Gunn/GOTG), some not so much(Alan Taylor/TDW) and others are just pawns on the Marvel machine which is not afraid of coming in and injecting their "own" humor on the movie(Scott Derickson/Doctor Strange).

Taika Waititi doesn't need anyone to tell him how to squeeze good and decent humor out of scenes. He is that kind of director. I feel like the Russos and James Gunn, Taika is also gonna be a hit from Marvel...

In the end of course there is gonna be humor in Thor Ragnarok. That doesn't mean at all that the movie be an all out comedy. It doesn't only exist black or white but also grey and there's where this movie is gonna end a probably grey area. But in the end this movie will deal with a lot of heavy stuff. Maybe the deaths of Heimdall and Odin, invasion of Asgard, gladiator fights, Hela and Hel, Surtur, Hulk... There needs to be a balance and i am sure Taika Waititi will strike it.

This mid credits scene from Doctor Strange was filmed by Taika Waititi(0.35 seconds there he is). It has important matters to discuss(disapearence of Odin) and "touchy" subjects to get into(Loki's presence on Earth) but Taika is still able to add a layer of levity by putting in the beer thing as a ice breaker of sorts between the 2 and he caps out the scene with Thor answering back to Doctor Strange's fancy words with "yes promptly" in kinda of a sarcastic way.

This can be the vibe for the hole movie. Does it look like an all out comedy? No.
Just some serious stuff sprinkled with Taika's humor and sensibilities. If this is anything to go by(that's it actually), in terms of what the movie can be then sign me in yesterday.

I think that scene displays a fundamental lack of understanding of the Thor character, who is nothing if not direct and straight to the point. I know you're only trying to allay any doubts about the tone, but for me that only makes me more nervous. I really didn't like that scene.*

*Unless that's actually Loki pretending to be Thor, in which case it's actually very well done.

Damn, how did I not see it!

Well said.

I'd be really interested to see how you've come to that, quite frankly, rather bizarre conclusion. I've been reading Thor comics for over 20 years and I see absolutely nothing wrong with Thor's characterization in that tiny, currently context-less scene that lasts for like 30 seconds. Dude, we get that you seem to have a major downer for this movie, for whatever reason, but that's just reaching.

Eff yeah! it better be more humorous than TDW.
Eff yeah! it better be the funniest and most energetic MCU flick to date on top of having one of the most humanistic characters/story.

I will accept no substitute with Taika Waititi at the helm.
No excuse whatsoever.

Well, focusing on the half of that sentence you arbitrarily cut out would be a good place to start. Thor simply doesn't act like that. He wouldn't come to Earth to find his father and then sit down for some frivolous banter with a stranger beforehand. It's completely out of character. If there's anything that's defined Thor as a character in the MCU it's his directness and impatience for that kind of thing. The whole thing felt really off to me, which is why I think (hope) that that's actually Loki.

The comics are irrelevant.

I don't think Dr.Strange can be tricked that easily. I just have a feeling he can sense if Loki is pretending to be someone else.

I don't see why people are getting so ******** about a simple difference of opinion.

I actually thought my response was reasonable. And I'm not ******** but I do feel a rash coming on.

Look, I agree with you with everything here. All their films have humour and that's a good thing, these are family blockbusters. Though for me they've gone over the top a few times, and their best films are ones where the humour is more subtle and well placed.

The only reason I said my comment, is because once again when talking about this film someone from the cast and crew mentioned the comedy and that's it.

Again, love Waititi, love his style of humour, and so even if it is a full on comedy (was exaggerating when I said that originally) then I'm sure to enjoy it. Anything is better than 'mewmew'.

its almost end of February and no trailer...Suicide Squad had the official trailer with 1 year in advance, i know even civil war first trailer with 10 months
