Thor: Ragnarok The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 5

Thinking about it - if there was sound to that pre-viz I assume that we'd hear both Thor and Hulk laughing; you know, what with the abundance of humour and lack of serious tone and all that........

Either that or there's going to be a humorous 'BOINK' sound effect when they hit.

Yep. With Hulk wearing a Groucho Marx spectacle/moustache/nose ensemble for comedic effect.

Who's freaking out? lol I'm not for one.
No matter WHO directs, it's MARVEL who gets what they want in the long run.
I see people just freaking way too much about the humor.
Taika Waititi's answer to that says it all...

https://***********/TaikaWaititi/status/833200328589729792

I don't know what's more sad - that Waititi's been asked about the humour in the movie or the fact that he felt the need to have to provide an answer.

Kevin Feige has already said that Ragnarok involves 'the end of everything' and has confirmed that it is the big lead in to Infinity War. He has also likened it to the Winter Soldier of Phase 3, meaning that it has a big knock on effect on the rest of the MCU and ties in to the next tentpole team up movie (IW) in the same way that Winter Soldier did to AoU. Even the official synopsis confirms that Thor has to race against time to stop Hela from completely destroying Asgard. What more do you want at this stage?

The actors likely talk more about the comedy side because the funny scenes are the ones they most enjoyed filming, it in no way means the whole movie is a comedy.

Well Feige made those comments a long while ago now, well before Taika came onboard, he hasn't said anything like it recently

But idk, I have absolute faith in Marvel
it's like, just talk about some other aspect of the film we should be anticipating... I just feel like you're gunna hype people more by talking about the massive action and scale of the film than "It'll be the comedy of the year!"

it's not tarnishing my hype, so no flaming, it's not a big deal... just mix up your talking points, is all I'm sayin

That lightning jump is actually a lightning fart. It's light fam

*reads Thor 3 is funniest film of mcu*

At this point Marvel Studios should drop all pretense and just add laugh tracks to all their films. The MCU is edging closer and closer to becoming high budget sitcoms. Might as well add laugh tracks.

Where did you read that? In a parallel universe where someone actually said any such thing?

No.

Short new interview snippet with Hiddles:

THOR: RAGNAROK - TOM HIDDLESTON ON HOW HELA UNITES THOR AND LOKI

He confirms that Thor and Loki have to unite against Hela and that she brings a scale of terror and destruction that neither character have ever seen before.

It's almost like Mr Hiddleston read our earlier conversation and thought he better clarify that this movie does indeed include high stakes. :cwink: The more I read about Hela, the more excited I get. She sounds like a total badass so far. :woot:

I want humor but not a comedy

Here it is!!! Stop panicking for god's sake!

Tom Hiddleston:
At the beginning of Ragnarok, Thor has a lot of questions and Loki, true to form, is not forthcoming with that many answers... but hammers are involved and the stakes are raised. Cate Blanchett, it's no secret, is playing the goddess of death who brings destruction in her wake and it is that kind of destruction both Thor and Loki have never seen, on a scale of terror that they never ever have seen before. So they fall back on their brotherhood, fractured though it is, to see what they can do to stop her.

Satisfied with all the darkness? Jesus, people need to f'ing relax...
Of course the damn movie will have heavy subjects, darker moments, and gut wrenching situations... it's Thor RAGNAROK! And of course, by getting a great humor director, the movie will also have his light and funny moments just making the darker moments feel that much more impactful. It's a matter of balance. Look at GOTG for a drawing of what me and other people have been trying to explain and this movie is actually going for a similar vibe because people loved it. There we're plenty of funny moments with much more characters than Thor Ragnarok has capable of being humorous and also had those heartfelt moments and spectacle.

Meanwhile on Twitter.

@TaikaWaititi Taika, how do you feel knowing that there are angry people by Thor Ragnarok adapting a more comic tone?

TW: Sounds like they need to laugh.

@TaikaWaititi and what would you say to people who are angry at the logo? And yes people really are angry at the logo lmao ..

TW: I'd say: Once you leave school, move out of home, & become a cog in the slow death machine, logos will be the last thing you get angry about.

People need to f'ing relax and let the man do his thing.
This stuff about the humor is just getting way out of hand. And it's my last 2 cents on the subject.

The actors and production people top to bottom should realize by now that a segment of fans have trepidations about "too much humor" and quit bragging how funny it is.
We're all ok with some humor, but constantly talking how funny it is doesn't really add anything positive to the buzz.
Almost all serious movies have some comic relief. If all anybody reports about any given upcoming action movie is mostly talk about how funny the main character will be in the upcoming movie -- it raises questions. Maybe unfounded worries, but why do they feed that worry.

That sounds awesome!

You guys do realize he was a co-writer on Moana, right? And look how funny that movie was!

Besides, I think the main reason the humor sucked in the last 2 Thor movies was because they tried making Darcy the comic relief and it didn't work. With that character gone, there's now room for better jokes anyway.

You know, all those scared that Ragnarok won't be dark and depressing. . . did you ever read the original Ragnarok arc from the Simonson run? It was many things, but "grim" wasn't really one of them. It was a lot more. . . heavy metal guitar riffs. Sure, some characters did die during it, but the tone was not "Lo is the tragedy" it was more "Death is nothing! Heroism lives forever!"

Indeed, you have a point here.

I'll relax after I find out just how much of the movie is spent on Contest of champions/Planet Hulk/Gladiator lol
I love Hulk and all but come on, it's a Thor Movie. I can see if the fights are a way to find out who is behind the Infinity Stones popping up.

One would think that all of the above should put an end to the over the top humour fears, but sadly we all know that it wont.

I would say that some of the humor in the first Thor was salvageable. Some of it was quite good. But in the TDW i have to agree with you. Darcy, her sidekick, crazy Selvig... it was a damn mess. Dumb humor all over the place. And way too much time spent on them that could have been better used somewhere else.

I'll relax after I find out just how much of the movie is spent on Contest of champions/Planet Hulk/Gladiator lol

First of all you have to accept that Hulk is indeed in Thor Ragnarok. Second of all you have to realize and make yourself understand that this is not a direct interpretation of the "Ragnarok" storyline or the "Planet Hulk" one. It's a mix of both. Like it or not it's what it is and you may well accept it sooner than later.

After accepting those things then you can start to figure out what is gonna happen accordingly to what we know and how much time is gonna be spent with the character. I'd say Hulk will probably be the third/fourth character in the movie with most screen time. 1. Thor / 2. Loki / 3. Hela / 4. Hulk...

"Contest of Champions/Plantel Hulk/Gladiator" Those are 3 things are just inspiration for what the Hulk part of the movie is gonna be. It's all being crammed into one through line. I assume that around 40% of the movie will be dedicated to that in order to properly add weight and content to the stakes. Flushing out why Hulk ended up there, what was/is he doing, the Grandmaster part in all of this, the fights in the arena and epic showdown between Thor and Hulk. And by the way most of this time we are gonna see what's happening through Thor's perspective. So he will be there and interact with all of this.
