I'm back from the midnight show. I'd like to make it known that Tim Burton is my favorite director and I have great respect and admiration for the man.
But this was a disappointment. The script sucked, it lacked that Tim Burton style, and the pacing was very strange. The best part of this movie was Helena Bonham Carter, who played a hilarious Red Queen.
But the rest? Meh. Just... meh.
And now I'm very sad.

i really liked the actress that played alice... she was great in the movie, and the only interesting character to me

johnny depp slept walked through his performance.. i think that hound dog and the chesshire cat were better characters.

i like the red queen too... but anne hathaway was horribly misused as the white queen

The 3-d midnight showing I went to was insane , the stoners really came out for this one , i joked with my brother that it was against his probation to be in the line ,the ushers at rave were also dressed up and we had alot of mad hatter wannabe.

The actual movie was fantastic . I liked the story , I thought it was visually amazing ,
the side characters were all great interpretations. Hare , Catepillar , and definately the Cheshire Cat were some of the best things abotu the movie. Overall it was a good cast and i liked the girl they chose for Alice. The third act got a little corny but being this afamily fun it didnt bother me too much. I wouldn't say Depp was great as the Hatter but he did create an enjoyable character . Also the dance was great , lol

i heard that the Wonderland characters aren't as weird or illogical as their counterparts in the books or even the animated film.

They're not, there's no sense of madness or craziness here within these characters, or indeed the film. This is probably the most un-Wonderland like interpretation of Wonderland ever.

Hathaway may as well have not been there.

I give it a 7.5 out of 10. Certainly nothing epic, but a very enjoyable movie. I thought it moved along too fast. There should have been at least an extra half hour of footage for back story and character development.

So far the reviews sound exactly like what I said the movie would be.

Just heard it on the news . Alice In Wonderland will play in dutch theaters after all. I assume that Disney negotiated the same settlement that they reached with other cinema chains as well.

I'm hoping to see the new Tron trailer too. Disney was very early with their Alice In Wonderland promotions ( we get to see trailers very close to the release date. Typically 1.5-1 month before the movie opens) here in holland so i'm really hoping for the tron trailer.

Glad they sorted it out.

Apparently they got guarantees from Disney regarding the gap between future cinematic and dvd releases.

I think that the extra publicity the boycot sparked (thousands of people complained according to reports) will help the chances of Alice scoring bigger at the box office than it would have.:o

Yup definately.
btw i still think that if studios are really focusing heavily on 3d releases , they should attach 3d trailers to all worldwide prints of movies. I haven't see Alice In Wonderland yet ( will watch it next week in IMAX) but given the fact i saw the AIW trailer in 3d with my very first IMAX viewing of Avatar ( which was on dec. 17th) as well as How To Train Your Dragon , i do hope that we'll get to see the trailers of the other big 3d releases such as Tron Legacy , Clash Of THe Titans , Potter etc.

I agree with pretty much of what you said.

$100M Weekend For 'Alice In Wonderland'?
By Nikki Finke | Friday March 5, 2010 @ 10:52am PST

FRIDAY 10:55 AM UPDATE: I just learned that today's matinees for Disney's Alice In Wonderland are running ahead of Avatar's so far.

FRIDAY AM: First it was $90+M. Now I'm hearing from Hollywood that Disney's Alice In Wonderland has a real shot at $100 million weekend. Remember, those higher priced 3D tickets will make all the difference. Even so, the Tim Burton-directed, Johnny Depp-starring fantasy flick will certainly earn $75+M.

To put things into perspective.
Avatar had a respectable opening but afterwards WOM spread pretty fast. With Alice In Wonderland running ahead it's due
1) marketing. AIW was marketed far more heavily then Avatar. Hell we gt the trailers for AIW 3 months ahead. With Avatar the final trailer was released a month before the opening
2) star power . AIW has an all star cast with Depp.
3) The material itself. AIW is a known property and it aimed at parents & kids.

So naturally AIW will have a bigger opening in then Avatar. The question is how much it'll drop in the subsequent weekends

Question guys. I'm not gonna put it in spoiler tags becuase parts of it are clearly shown in the trailers and tv spots, but how is the fight between the Hatter and the Knave of Hearts?

Weak. What you see of the fight between them in the trailers is exactly what you see in the film. Burton is focusing mostly on Alice during this battle. But there is a short bit of suspense between the two at one point.

It's very brief and is going on the same time Alice is fighting the dragon so I don't think much of it . However Knaves strongholds and captures the hatter at the begining of the film . I was also thinking Hatter would of killed Knave but he spares him .

Meh.

Woud you guys have liked to have seen more? I understand that Alice should be the main focus of the final battle, but should their fight have had more attention?

I was going to watch this in IMAX 3D today, but they're sold out for the whole day

Their fight was fine for what it was and I didn't think we really needed more from it .Some people feel the last half of the movie goes by too quickly but i think we got enough in the final fight becuase the outcome is obvious. I wuld of liked to see the Dragon take out some of the card soldiers or something though.

Is the dragon that's shown in the trailers(just to clarify that it's not a spoiler)the Jabberwocky or just a dragon? I understand that Jabberwocky was the nonsensical poem Carroll wrote but I've always like the literal monster interpretation.

this movie will make a ton... there were a couple sold out theaters here..

Saw this in RealD 3D, and wish I had saved a couple of bucks by seeing it in 2D. I'm not 100% on the 3D bandwagon, unless it's filmed using 3D cameras.

The film itself was enjoyable, but I probably wouldn't see it a second time. Pacing was odd in places, and the final scenes in 'Wonderland' seemed rushed.

It was kind of annoying when Alice kept saying how everything happening was a dream. It was fine at first, but then she continued saying it over and over again. I was like, "ok...you were scratched by this monster, you felt real pain, your arm's bleeding, and all this stuff is going on and you're still not waking up...it's not a dream."

The lead actress was great as Alice, and better than I expected. Depp was OK as the Mad Hatter, but I couldn't understand what he was saying half the time. Carter was very funny as the Red Queen, and Hathaway made me smile with her whimsical portrayal of the White Queen. My favorite character in the whole film was the Cheshire Cat, and I could have watched him alone for 2 hours, along with that crazy caffeine-induced rabbit.

B-

It's amazing how this bloke can continue to disregard the source material. You can add Alice to the list alongside Willy Wonka, Batman and Planet of the Apes. Don't get me wrong it's enjoyable for what it is, Depp and Carter are as usual enthralling, but make no mistake it's no Alice.
