The brow developed over time. Kirby did not draw the brow in his original drawing of the Thing. If they can make the brow, so it does not interfere in any way with Chilkis performance then I would be all for it, but I don't want to sacrafice the emotion, and the facial expressions in the name of progress. The facial expressions were piceless.
Basically, I think we agree.
I'd just point out that
originally (we're talking FF#1) Ben looked nothing like he appeared by issue 3 or 4, other than being orange, and that's only a slight exaggeration. As originally concieved, Ben was about twice as wide and he was a huge lump, basically. The FF didn't have uniforms 'til issue #3. Sue didn't have a force field 'til issue...#20 I think. The Torch's flames obscured his features for quite a while, too.
The Hulk was grey in Hulk #1, and only changed into the Hulk at night for the first few issues. Spider-man had those webs under his arms for the first 40 issues or so. Daredevil wore yellow & red tights to start with. Etc etc...
As for the brow, it began to emerge ever so slightly around issue 10 or 11. It's clearly evident on the cover of FF #12 and Its full realization came about (if I'm not mistaken) when Joe Sinnot took over the inking sometime in the early 40-something issues. His rocky hide found its definitive look under Sinnot's inks as well. Sinnot brought in the heavier shadows to define the plates as Kirby brought the character's look to fruition.
The look of that period is the look that the character retains to this day. Because that look was complete before Lee & Kirby hit their mid-way point, I'd call it definitive. My guess is they would, too.
Certainly the world at large knows the character of the Thing by
that look,
which includes the brow. To me, the Thing's brow is as iconic as the blue uniforms and the phrases "Flame on!" and "It's clobberin' time!"
It's like purple pants on the Hulk, Clark Kent's glasses and the bat signal.
So when I say "traditional," I'm talking about the look of the FF overall, the look that arrived by 1964 and the look that has been as the model for every FF "public appearance" and product since that time.
Bottom line: I don't want anything to take away from Chiklis' performance,
including the brow. But done properly, I really believe it will
enhance it.
