Y'know, I honestyly don't get why so many folks seem to hate this film. I gave it an "8 out of 10" on the SHH! main page, deducting 2 points for the supernatural themes. MSJ was 100% right when he expressed concern about it at Wizard Texas. The idea of fighting the devil with demonic abilities, or that redemption can be obtained through good works...neither of those sit right with me. All the same, as a complete film, I still enjoyed it immensely. My cousin was way more of a GR fan than me (can't remember reading that many of the books, if any), but on the whole I think it succeeded for the most part. I do give MSJ serious kudos for NOT making this R-rated, because in all honesty, more intensity would've just made the movie a whole lot worse.
Now, for the kudos to everyone else:
Nicolas Cage: excellent actor as always, and he really helped to sell the notion of a man whose own choices have trapped him in a life he doesn't want for himself.
Eva Mendes: Drop-dead beautiful and gorgeous, not to mention a little sassy and very brave in her portrayal of Roxanne. She also displayed real concern and love for Johnny in the story, and the film was better for it.
Wes Bentley: I'm not too familiar with his previous work, but as Blackheart, he seemed to be pushing the character a bit too far. He was clearly evil, and Wes did a good job with that, but the role needed to tone down a bit on the comedy.
Peter Fonda: Mega-rops for his portrayal of the devil. He gave that character a bit of common ground with Biblical Scripture, in that this depiction holds true to the notion of Satan being a deal-maker, and above all, a liar who twists the truth at every oppritunity. The goal was clearly to give us a being we wanted to hate, so in that respect, mission accomplished.
Sam Elliot: Not much screen time for this guy, but he definitely ate the scenery when his turn came up. I liked him in "Hulk", and he does a very good job here as well.
All in all, I stick by my opinion...8 out of 10. Good film, and I look forward to the DVD.
