Tom and Jerry returning to the big screen....... IN LIVE ACTION/CGI movie!

Tom and Jerry Coming to the Big Screen

January 22, 2009

Warner Bros. is planning to bring "Tom and Jerry" to life as CG characters that run around in live-action settings, says Variety.

The studio-based Dan Lin, currently producing the upcoming Sherlock Holmes and executive producer on Terminator Salvation, will adapt the classic Hanna-Barbera property as an origin story that reveals how Tom and Jerry first meet and form their rivalry before getting lost in Chicago and reluctantly working together during an arduous journey home.

Eric Gravning is penning the script.

Warners owns the rights to Hanna-Barbera's slate of popular animated properties and has several of them in development for bigscreen adaptation. Those include Robert Rodriguez's version of The Jetsons and producer Donald De Line's Yogi Bear.

"Tom and Jerry" originated as a series of 114 animated shorts, produced by MGM's toon studio between 1940 and 1960, and won seven Academy Awards. New toons were produced after that, and Warner Bros. released Tom and Jerry: The Movie in 1992 as a feature-length toon.

So it'll be like Scooby-Doo. And Robert Rodriguez doing The Jetsons?

Robert Rodriguez doing The Jetsons sounds interesting, I guess the question now is will Droopy being in this movie too?

these live action/cgi flicks like Garfield and Alvin and the Chipmunks turn me off. they should just be CG films.

I hope they don't downplay the violence, but they probably will......... :(

Are they going to try & make Tom & Jerry somewhat resemble an actual real cat & mouse the same way Garfield resembled an actual cat & Scooby Doo resembled an actual dog or will it be more like Roger Rabbit & Rocky & Bullwinkle where they keep their looks the same?

Hasn't the whole "lost, having to work together'' been done before in the cartoon movie ?

i really think all they need to do is to make new shorts with Tom and Jerry/ or Looney Tunes right before a movie; like the Goofy short that premiered before National Treasure 2.

Agreed. Featurettes are under appreciated and underused! In the old days of cinema, they made up a very significant chunk of the experience, but now they're hardly used at all. :(

I really hope they'll realize that this is a bad idea.

The former, which will make it even more disturbing if they maintain the level of violence. I just can not really see how watching a photorealistic cat get his neck smashed in a window sill will not give kids nightmares.

I guess Tom and Jerry will talk in this movie also.

i really wanna see the jetsons done right with live action

if Rodriguez is at the helm, should be interesting

I'm still waiting for Top Cat live-action movie, tbh.

seriously there are only 5 hanna barbera cartoons that can work in live action

flintstones
jetsons
scooby doo
johnny quest
johnny bravo

and thats only because the majority is a human cast. the elements such as rosie, scooby and the dinosaurs can be done with special effects but they are just extras not the main focus of the film, if you do that we get garfied

seriously i have no idea how yogi would work, and even less so tom and jerry there is no way in hell they would get away with the amount of violence needed to match the classic toons in a kids film today

Yeah, I am waiting for that one. Just to see how they address how he was basically the internet scammer of his day.

I love and Tom and Jerry but, I think this is a bad idea.

With Yogi & Boo Boo they could just do people in costume with animatronic heads & tweak that with cgi if need be unless they are going for more realism. Do things practically if possible & only use cgi if necessary.

you need a talented director and a GOOD script for a movie where the mouse and cat dont talk.
noone has problems that wall-e doesnt talk.

ohhhh and by the way this movie will still not work no matter how good the script is. because of this

MPAA. plain and simple. because if the mpaa alows that a cat gets sliced in half even without the blood they will need to go back and rate every movie again because it would be unfair to a lot of movies where tehy had to cut out scenes that were not for kids.

this two animals were hurting eachother. you can not make a movie where they eat cakes, sing and are dancing polka.

If only they could make it true to the source material, then that would be one wacked out movie but there's nothing to worry about because not many movies are ever true to the original source material. It won't be so over the top & violent as the cartoon, but they will probably take the antics between Tom & Jerry that could work in a live action setting & go from there. When humans aren't around/out of site or asleep they will probably have them talking, singing, dancing & or eating etc.

What was the dog's name that Jerry alway's ran to in the cartoon & he took care of Jerry & sometimes beat up on Tom, was it Brutus or something like that? I hope they include him in the movie.
