Wow, it was a damn tasty year for movies in Holland this year. We got atleast three classics (two of which the rest of the world got last year, you'll notice a couple of movies that seem old already..) and just....alot of really enjoyable stuff.
1. The Dark Knight
I'm not sure what I can still say about this. Absolutely the most stunning theatre experience I've (ever) had and I didn't even see it in IMAX! It's the whole Batman feeling wrapped into 2 and a half hours of finely crafted film. The action scenes are tense and we also got some bonafide suspense scenes. I'm a fool for crime dramas, and mixing Batman with that genre is pushing my happy buttons. A good time to be a Batman fan. Unforgettable.
2. There Will be Blood
I needed atleast three viewings to fully appreciate this as the masterpiece it is. It's not an easy watch, you need to concentrate watching it. You need to read the faces and reactions because there's not a whole lot spoken about motivations and feelings etc. It needs one's attention. That pays off because it's fascinating, and thoroughly original. The score is superb and gives it an edge of madness that culminates in what is perhaps one of the most insane ending scenes ever.
3. No Country For Old Men
I came out of the theatre with mixed feelings, but now I've learned to live with it's anticlimactic ending. In the theatre it was butt-clenchingly exciting, it will never get that intense again but there's plenty left to enjoy. It's beautiful on DVD; the directing and cinematography is just impeccable and flawless. The acting is top-notch. i especially enjoyed the performance by Woody Harrelson.
4. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
I saw it in a packed theatre with noisy people who cheered and ''Eeeew''-ed at all the right parts. It was great fun, and the extremely pulpy new Indy turn did click with me. Indiana in the fridge was just...phenomenal. I must confess I haven't seen it a second time though, I will soon.
5. The Darjeeling Limited
Wes Anderson's new feature has all the man's trademarks and it is great because of it. Great use of Kinks songs.
6. Quantum of Solace
A fast, action packed thrill ride. Craig indeed is the most badass Bond there has ever been.
7. In Bruges
Less comedy and more drama then I'd had expected. Very original. Good music too.
8. Hunger
An example of pure cinema. No words are needed to sharply draw the characters. Very impressive.
9. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Burton gets tiring. But this was refreshing. A musical with lots of blood.
10. RocknRolla
Ritchie pays hommage to the Long Good Friday. A chase with invincible Russians is the undisputed highpoint of this flick. Looking forward to the DVD.
YES!!! Finally someone else who loves Indy in the fridge! That was so damn awesome! I loved the tense build up to it. The whole beginning up to that point was the best part of the film.
Usually, that just means that movies from 2007 didn't come out in their respective countries until 2008.*big huge outlandish LOL at the people naming movies from 2007![]()
