People just make too much of these box office records as far as I am concerned. First it was a DC/Marvel thing, which I never understood in the first place, but that's an understandable rivalry/competition. But even the most ardent TDK/Nolan fans shouldn't be bothered by something like this. They are better than that. Who gives a **** about a 5-day WW opening record? The only records I think actually matter are the three day domestic and the overall domestic, and you can't even compare the two because TF2 had a Wednesday release. Not to mention another comic book film will in all likelyhood topple the 3-day opening record in the near future anyhow.

Update: Looks like TDK's 5 day domestic record is going to fall:

SATURDAY AM: Paramount's Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen is looking like it took in $36.7M tonight from 4,234 theaters. The studio is now estimating its 3-day weekend cume bigger than expected: $115M vs $90M previously anticipated. That means the robot sequel could get to $204M for the 5-day opening total. Which means the rock'em, sock'em pic, despite lousy reviews, could gun down the 5-day opening record of $203.8M set by last summer's The Dark Knight. New Line/Warner Bros' counter-programming with the simpering My Sister's Keeper looks like $5M today from 2,606 venues for an estimated $14M weekend.

^Oh noes, there goes the validity of TDK right out the window!

:o

That estimate is a bit too high. I think it'll come up short. I see it's 5-day around the 190+ range. If it breaks TDK's 5-day record it won't take away from any of TDK's accomplishments.

You know just like people were quick to point out that TDK's single day records and 3 day record were due in main part to it being released on a Friday then so can we say that Tranformers 2's potential 5 day record (if in fact it happens) is due in large part to it being released on a Wednesday.

That means TF2 had an opening day Wed, a second day Thursday, and then a full weekend to make all that money. While TDK made its money from an opening weekend and then a 4th day Monday and 5th day Tuesday.

TF2 has already beaten TDK's 5 day world wide gross - $203,773,518

Domestic: $125,946,000
Foreign: $80,184,013
Worldwide: $206,130,013

and this is just 3 days not even including today or Sunday

TDK's $203,773,518 in 5 days was from the U.S. only.:cwink: Nice try though.

Plus, that doesn't count ticket price inflation and number of tickets actually sold. So even if it does manage to outdo the 5-day total of TDK, TF-2 won't have nearly as good legs as TDK did. (Not to mention TDK was #1 at the box-office for 4 straight weeks, something that TF-2 won't get.)

Well, much can't be said in regards to inflation and TDK considering the movie came out less than a year ago. Had TDK come out 10 years than that would be a different case.

I've always wished instead of tracking $ movies instead were more noted by tickets sold. But of course that isn't as "sexy" as saying a movie made a kabillion dollars in 3 days.

That is obvious. Ice Age 3 comes out and T2 will have been out for 10 days. But, next weekend is the 4th and that will bring the crowds to the theatres and T2 is the only big blockbuster that is still fresh. So, it won't do horrible next weekend. I expect 40-50 million or even more from it next weekend.

The ticket price inflation from last year to this year is a basic non factor. Inflation comes into play with movies that are at least 3 years apart. Please stop trying to defend TDK with these pathetic arguments. It just makes us Batfans look sad. Why not wait and see what the final numbers are for TF2 before you start crying inflation and 4 weeks straight and all that.

No, it's just that pics like Ice Age 3 and Harry Potter 6 will cut into TF-2's subsequent weeks -- TDK had virtually no serious competition throughout its first few weeks. The fact that the majority of the people on the board like TF-2 doesn't matter -- it's only a very small percentage of the people who went to go see it.

WOM will sink (or swim) TF-2 the second week onwards. I'm praying for a Friday the 13th drop of 70% or more.

That's true. All it's doing now is burning off it's demand. I don't think it'll have strong legs either. Especially with Ice Age 3, Public Enemies, Bruno and HBP coming out. It's movie legs will take a hit.

i dont think this movie will have bad word of mouth. noone cares so much about the humor. they wanted robots fighting and they will get robots fighting.

I LOVE the fact this is making huge money ....

Movie going CAN just be fun!

Even if TF2 breaks one of TDK's records, that doesn't take away the fact that TDK is the better film and has many, many more accomplishments. I don't think the five day record is that big of a deal. If it makes more money than TDK, then I'll consider that a big accomplisment, but I don't see that happening.
i think even the TF2 lovers know this. thats why it will be so strange when bat-fans will complain and all the time talk how it was a better and more inteligent movie. like we dont know :yay:

I'd have to wait for the 2nd weekend to see if it's going to break TDK's records. Had it opened on Friday it would have beaten it's opening day/weekend records, based on the numbers we see now.

TDK really had no competition after it was released for weeks. I think it was Tropic Thunder that finally broke it's no. 1 at the BO streak. Transformers will have lots of upcoming competition with Harry Potter coming out and such.

No sir. You are DEAD wrong. You can just comb this thread and see how personal people are taking this. It's goddamn pathetic b/c that's at least half of the Nolan fans on this board. Because the movie might break ONE of his records, people have to start defending the integrity of the movie?! Seriously?! And this is everywhere, except, of course, for the real world.
