Hell, after this, they'll let him direct an adaptation of Johnny Tremaine if he wants.

Lord.

As per Showbiz Data, the actuals have Transformers 2 at $197 million over its 5-day weekend. Still a jaw-dropping opening.

No question, it'll win the July 4th weekend, but how much will it fall?

EDIT: They've updated their info with finalized numbers. The 5 day opening was $200 million.

Here's one of them. http://www.worldofkj.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&p=1440628 I'm looking for a post made on the BOM forums recently and one more forum link.

Yeah see I'd be skeptical of those numbers. Here's my source:

http://www.the-numbers.com/dvd/charts/weekly/thisweek.php
(if you look down at the #27 slot you'll see Transformers sold about 60K units. Also you'll see its total at 15 million)

http://www.the-numbers.com/dvd/charts/annual/2008.php
(This gives you TDKs units sales for 2008: about 10.95 million)

http://www.the-numbers.com/dvd/charts/annual/2009.php
(Down at #22 you'll see TDK's sales for 2009: about 1.8 million)

From there it was just a matter of putting 2 and 2 together and then comparing. Also for Iron Man there is no 2009 number so I just took its 2008 number and added another 300K or so.

It's doing freaking amazing.

Here's hoping Peter Jackson takes up the next one! (hehe)

I absolutely love it when the public gives a big ole FU to the so called film critics.:hoboj:
And no, I havent saw it yet but i'm gonna.

Screw the NY Times. The studios are more to blame than us. All they care about anymore is profit. They've completely shunned originality. They don't wanna risk losing money so they just keep pumping out the same formulaic (word?) films over and over again. When's the last time we got a movie from Hollywood that wasn't a remake, or a reboot, or an adaptation of a popular story/book/comic/cartoon/toy line/video game/tv show/etc etc etc.

Sure every once in a while a story adaption can be amazing (LOTR), or a reboot can be done to perfection (TDK), but if Hollywood never takes any risks then there's never going be any originality. No original stories. No original visions. Tell me where can we go these days to get something original like 2001: A Space Odyssey, E.T., Jaws, The Godfather, Goodfellas, or even Terminator, RoboCop, Nightmare on Elm St., or Ferris Bueler's Day Off? Movies like that are clear examples that you can be original and still make money. It's just that studios aren't willing to take the risks anymore. They want guaranteed box-office. They don't hang the financial success of their movies on their quality, they'd rather rest assured knowing that 20 million Twilight readers are gonna go watch the movie regardless. They wanna know that Wolverine fans are gonna pay up enough to make its money back regardless of how crappy the movie turned out.

But you know there are still original ideas today but they are few and far between, and mostly you have to be a fan of indy films in order to find them. A movie like Memento is a prime example. The Visitor, In Bruges, Before The Devil Knows Your Dead, so on and so forth. That's one place (among a few others like Pixar films, and international films) where we can still see originality but it's definately a dying art.

Transformers 2 expected success is a sad thing to me.

Well the general public likes it. Exit polls showed 90% of them liked it. Also when I watched it, both times people clapped at the end. I'm not talking the lame one or two person clap that you heard at the end of Superman Returns or Spiderman 3. There was good buzz. It's a fun summer movie. The internet is full of haters imo. You have to make this film for the masses cause Transformers has grown past it's fan base. There is a reason why Michael Bay is a good commercial director.

It was a dumb, fun summer movie and that is what is was suppose to be. We will see a 3rd, it won't bomb either, so we will likely see up to 5 or 6 films. Doubt Bay stays on that long and I doubt Shia and Megan do as well so films 4-5/6 will be a different arc.

i dont even think peopel are getting dumb. last year people showed that they like quality movies and that they will pay for it. it was th eTDK. this year they wanted to see robots fight and some idiotic but cute humor. why not.

relaxing and chilling.

if i want something classy i watch something classy
if I want porn i watch porn
if i want a summer action flick i watch one....i dont see why everyone has an issue with Transformers 2 not being shakespearean

I agree! Especially with the porn:o

Who watches porn and dissects the plot? You watch porn to watch porn. I watch Transformers to see mindless action. If the movie is superb with good acting, good writing, etc..., then I am genuinely surprised and I love it. If it doesn't have all of that, I wasn't dumb enough to expect it.

funny thing is I watched the cartoon for the same thing. I didnt watch the cartoon for its comentary on the energy crisis. I watched to see Optimus beat up the Decepticons...same reason I went to see the movie

So yeah...this thing is definitely doing over 400 million.
I saw a bootleg version of the forest fight online and it was good. I also saw this other scene with the alien girl and it was unbelievably terrible.

Someone offered to pay for my ticket but I refused. Im just not interested enough....but it seems like the GA are eating this up.

BTW: The 400 million club has really grown this past decade.

I agree.....well, I don't watch porn, but I agree with the sentiment.

It won't approach The Dark Knight's $533 million, but the question is will it break past the $423 million of Pirates 2 or the $441 million from Shrek 2.

Keep your opinions to the movie, not the posters.....

I personally hope lame Bay stays away from the next film....and Spielberg takes over the directors chair.

A Tranformers film directed by Steven Spielberg would equal a TRUE epic and not some lame unbalanced popcorn film that is aimed at making 10-20 years olds happy.

Because there was a time when a 'Summer Action Flick' meant Raiders of the Lost Ark or Die Hard or Jaws. A summer ride with some substance if you looked for it.

Spielberg said Bay is perfect for Transformers. The general audience isn't expecting anything more than what Bay delivered. Whine all you want but people liked it. If this movie makes less than 300 million than there would be issues. If it makes closer to 400 million then everything went as planned and they pleased who they wanted to please. Bay and Spielberg took a story about giant fighting robots and turned it into a commercial success. Let's put it this way, if people don't like it, it won't make the money it's going to make.

I guess im not sophisticated enough to enjoy a movie on its own merit

Well....the school owns my laptop, so even if I wanted to, it wouldn't be the smartest thing to do.....:cwink:
