It should make around 50 million or so this weekend alone. That's not bad for a 30 year old sequel to a movie with a cult following. Watch them do sequels to Goonies and Monster Squad soon....lol

Just saw it. I thought it was pretty cool. And Daft Punk's score was awesome.

Just saw it in 3d today. awesome movie. at first i was a little worried it would turn out to be an almost exact copy of the 1st 1, cuz of how young flyn was hacking into his company, and how it disc wars and light cycles and stuff like that were happening in a similer order. but it stood out more as it went on. I was really impressed w/ how the actor who played sam chaneled his inner jeff bridges in some scenes. and jeff bridges was awesome in his own dual role. all other performances were pretty good too. action, effects, story, and music were all top notch as well. I give the film a 9 out of 10.

To answer some questions:
- The thing around Sam's neck is his father's disc.
- Quorra never left on her own, cause it was too risky sending her that deep into Clu's lair. Kevin didn't accompany her, because CLU would be aware of Kevin being on the grid - once Sam ****ed up, he had no choice.
- Tron is alive. He becomes a free program at the end, and they can't have another tron movie without Tron - even if THAT version died, forty years of data is on Kevin's disc (now in Sam's possession) and Alan could use that to make another Tron.
- Will there be a sequel? Two words: Ed Dillinger.

Just saw the movie and really enjoyed it. Is the original worth checking out?

How do you know that the chip on Sam's neck is Kevin's disk? Does it ever give any specific indication of what exactly he is backing up? I thought he just put the whole grid on there and shut the server down.

Definitely. It'll give you a much better view of the whole thing. You'll get to know Tron himself and just get a whole lot of little references.

Plus it'll definitely help to know Dillinger if his son is indeed being groomed as a major character/antagonist in the next one.

Just keep everything in perspective; it's from 1982 and it's slightly slower and less action heavy than Legacy. The special effects are like an ancient relic now, but they were revolutionary at the time and they're still very enjoyable to watch because it's a very unique style that really was never copied.

Unfortunately the DVD is out of print and not even available on Netflix. I've found decent prices on used copies in stores, though. But the movie is apparently being released on Blu-Ray sometime next year in conjunction with the Blu-Ray release of Legacy, although a date hasn't been announced.

Think about this: What was Sam holding when he was leaving - what was he holding when he left?

And the grid wasn't shut down, it wiped clean by Kevin.

You can find Tron to view online for free, but it's not legal. It is odd to me that Netflix, Xbox Live, Epix, Blockbuster, and other services are not offering this movie online to coincide with the launch of the sequel.

As for the Blu-Ray release, that's the best news I've heard all night.

Wait did they announce something? When are they releasing the original Tron on Blu Ray?

Also, random thought... if this Flash movie ever gets off the ground (still not sure it will) anyone else like Garrett Hedlund for Barry Allen? He's got the look down for sure, and he seems versatile enough that he could play a somewhat nerdy, (initially) uptight CSI type. He's a bit younger that I would normally picture Barry, but of course they would want to turn Flash into a franchise and youth gives you longevity.

I looked it up just now and it was just a vague news article saying "sometime" around 2011 to coincide possibly with a Blu-Ray release of Tron Legacy. Slash film dot com had an article that said that Disney exec's were embarrassed with the reception the original Tron got by young adult spectators who had never seen the movie. They were apparently making fun of the dated special effects and they thought releasing the film on Blu Ray might hurt the reception Tron Legacy would get. Therefore, they will release it after TL's run in the box office is over.

yeah, i don't want to get too far into a tron: Legacy vs. Avatar debate because i really liked both films. i just don't get why the same critics who praised the crap out of avatar are denouncing tron. All of what they perceive to be tron's weaknesses are things that they determined to be acceptable in avatar. they claim that the story is weak and familiar, the characters are paper-thin, the dialogue is bad and the cgi, while impressive, isn't 100% accurate at times. So why was this okay in one movie and not in another?

this.

There's no official release date. There's a video online in which Tron director Steve Lisberger talks about how he recently spent six weeks personally working on the remaster for the upcoming Blu-Ray release. When pressed for a timeframe, he said he couldn't say for sure, but that it would be very soon. Other reports I've read suggest that it will coincide with the release of Legacy.

I dont see him doing it...he walked away from Captain America to do Tron

Interesting. I need to see it again... it's been a long ass time. I didn't have any problem understanding the new movie, but I'm sure I didn't catch all of the references. I tried watching it again (when Netflix still had it available) but there was something wrong with the disc and it kept jumping scenes.

That's not quite accurate... he was already finished with Tron when they were auditioning for Cap. His name did "fall off the list" of potential candidates, though I don't believe there was ever a definite reason that anyone gave. Given the way they burned through potential actors during that casting call, I'm guessing he was just one of the ones that they passed on. Which is fine; I think Evans is more suited to Cap.

Aside from Daft Punk's score and the fantastic art design, f**k everything about this movie. What a colossal disappointment. Such a shame because this franchise had huge potential. Looks like Disney will have to rely on Pirates once more.

Yes, because the Pirates movies were so much better. I'm already in line for my next chance to see Johnny Depp ham the crap out of a 2.5 hour movie.

Heres the thing, its already going to be a huge box office hit, disney is already starting talks of making a 3rd film, and they are making a lot of merchandise based off of Tron. I think its here to stay for quite a while

That's my point. Pirates will actually have lines to support the franchise for quite a while.

Studios are always in talks to make sequels. It's practically a given with any tentpole blockbuster that it's intended to be made into a series. I'd honestly be surprised if it does well past the first week. My expectations were already lowered from friends and general WOM, but I wanted to judge for myself how the movie fared. It still disappointed. Judging from the (non)reaction in my IMAX showing, it's a sentiment shared by many.

I could always be wrong. I just don't think this will have enough strength to last.

I really think that 'Legacy' isn't perfect but it's perfectly entertaining. I wish Olivia Wilde was in it more though.

Honestly, I think this will overcome whatever negative buzz it intially had. It's almost like a more successful (hopefully) Speed Racer.

8/10

it's making money. and if you wanna compare quality to the Pirates sequels...

I remember going to a party at a friends home years ago and my friends father pulled out a video tape he thought we would enjoy, and the video tape was Tron.
I remember immediately liking the light cycles, and intimidated by the giant menacing Recognizers.
Well some 20 plus years later those same feelings came back as i watched Tron:Legacy.
Kevin Flynn(Jeff Bridges) once the CEO of ENCOM International and creator of the popular arcade game Tron has been missing for 20 years.Leaving his son and company behind and totaly clueless of his whereabouts.
Sam Flynn(Garrett Hedlund ), now 27-years-old and majority owner of ENCOM,would rather speed down the highway on his fathers Ducati motorcycle, perform stunts, and pull pranks on the company than sit in on board meetings.
Alan Bradley(Bruce Boxleitner) who has been acting as a surrogate Dad to Sam,and an executive consultant for ENCOM comes to Sam after his latest stunt staing he has received a message on his pager from his father, that came from his old office/arcade.
Sam investigates a few key strokes, and he is soon zapped and ends up in a virtual universe called The Grid.
In this universe Kevins doppleganger/creation CLU rules, and wants to conquer beyond The Grid.
I have to applaud everyone who worked on any tech/FX for this film it is absolutely amazing and stunning its a feast for the eyes ,heart and mind what these gifted men and women have put together for the big screen.
Jeff Bridges is great as usual, displaying the right amount of emotion and distance for a man that has been in a virtual world for 20 years.Although he seems to be channeling
"The Dude" Lebowski for some of his scenes.
I actually didnt think Garrett Hedlund or Olivia Wilde as Quorra, were that bad in their roles, but of course Bridges blows them away whenever their on screen with him.
Michael Sheen was pretty funny as the fey club runner Castor/Zuse,he seemed to be channeling David Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust phase.
The music by Daft Punk is incredibly addictive
The script borrows a bit from The Matrix, but hey didnt the Matrix borrow a bit from the original Tron film? The script also has a few plot holes and is incredibly predictable, and i never got used to the younger/CGI version of Bridges.
But if you're going to see the film go for the IMAX version,if thats not possible see it in a theatre with the best digital 3D and sound possible. You're really cheating yourself if you dont.
Now where can i get a light cycle?
Scale of 1-10 an 8

I thought this was interesting and very meta too. I was hoping for some more elaboration on this. Like, what the hell? Did everyone become celebrities and decide to market the crap out of their strange story? Was TRON the movie in their world more successful than in ours? Did it differ? I was half expecting and hoping them to do some crazy Matrix **** on the audience, breaking the fourth wall and talking directly to us. Did I mention this felt like a ride? Maybe that's why.

Yeah, it did feel like a ride. I'm guessing their TRON movie was more successful than the one in ours or at least more popular, even though our real world Tron movie did well at the BO and received good critic reviews and a cult following.

I guess ENCOM was the IBM & Microsoft of its day, as evident with the video clip of Bridges talking to the crowd a la the IBM hammer throw commercial from the 80s.

Just saw the movie and really enjoyed it. Is the original worth checking out?

Yeah, as someone mentioned it is! However, take it for what its worth and remember it's the 80s, and very experimental lol.

1. I think Disney is wanting to digitally remaster everything before they put it out. 2. They will wait until more people demand to have it and release it closer to Tron: Legacy's release date.
