I remember going to a party at a friends home years ago and my friends father pulled out a video tape he thought we would enjoy, and the video tape was Tron.
I remember immediately liking the light cycles, and intimidated by the giant menacing Recognizers.
Well some 20 plus years later those same feelings came back as i watched Tron:Legacy.
Kevin Flynn(Jeff Bridges) once the CEO of ENCOM International and creator of the popular arcade game Tron has been missing for 20 years.Leaving his son and company behind and totaly clueless of his whereabouts.
Sam Flynn(Garrett Hedlund ), now 27-years-old and majority owner of ENCOM,would rather speed down the highway on his fathers Ducati motorcycle, perform stunts, and pull pranks on the company than sit in on board meetings.
Alan Bradley(Bruce Boxleitner) who has been acting as a surrogate Dad to Sam,and an executive consultant for ENCOM comes to Sam after his latest stunt staing he has received a message on his pager from his father, that came from his old office/arcade.
Sam investigates a few key strokes, and he is soon zapped and ends up in a virtual universe called The Grid.
In this universe Kevins doppleganger/creation CLU rules, and wants to conquer beyond The Grid.
I have to applaud everyone who worked on any tech/FX for this film it is absolutely amazing and stunning its a feast for the eyes ,heart and mind what these gifted men and women have put together for the big screen.
Jeff Bridges is great as usual, displaying the right amount of emotion and distance for a man that has been in a virtual world for 20 years.Although he seems to be channeling
"The Dude" Lebowski for some of his scenes.
I actually didnt think Garrett Hedlund or Olivia Wilde as Quorra, were that bad in their roles, but of course Bridges blows them away whenever their on screen with him.
Michael Sheen was pretty funny as the fey club runner Castor/Zuse,he seemed to be channeling David Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust phase.
The music by Daft Punk is incredibly addictive
The script borrows a bit from The Matrix, but hey didnt the Matrix borrow a bit from the original Tron film? The script also has a few plot holes and is incredibly predictable, and i never got used to the younger/CGI version of Bridges.
But if you're going to see the film go for the IMAX version,if thats not possible see it in a theatre with the best digital 3D and sound possible. You're really cheating yourself if you dont.
Now where can i get a light cycle?
