Unseen Ultimate DC Sketches, maybe

Black Nick Fury annoys me because he's not black Nick Fury, he's Sam Jackson. :o

But I like Black Fury. Sounds like a Jim Kelly movie.

And if it were, it'd probably be awesome. But the only Black Fury I know of is the Ultimates' and he's just Sam Jackson.

True... I think Fury would have gotten a better reception of they kept him as, y'know, a Black Nick Fury, like they had him in the early X-Men comics (or was it Spider-Man?) His first appearance was, quite clearly, Nick Fury... with a tan, fuzzy hair and a wide nose.

Fury in the Ultimates never really bugged me. Mostly because in most panels he isn't drawn exactly like Sam Jackson. He usually just looks inspired by Sam Jackson to me.

But maybe I just never forced myself to see him as Jackson, and just thought of him as a different person. I never thought of Jackson's voice when I read it or anything like that.

About these Ultimate DC characters, DC never planned an Ultimate story or to use these designs. Wizard came up with the idea during the hight of Ultimate Marvel's popularity. A sort of What if DC had done Ultimate DC What would that look like? So these aren't really how DC would do them, I think, DC might have different ideas all together for that.
But the reason I posted these is because it shows the process, various sketches and ideas before finding the final version. For example Green Lantern went through various looks before they chose to use the JLU cartoon version.

I don't see how you could not see Sam Jackson and hear Sam Jackson's voice when you read Ultimate Fury. Hitch clearly based him on Jackson visually, and Millar wrote him a lot like how Sam Jackson sounds in a lot of the movies where he's a high-ranking military dude, to my ear. He's blatantly based on the actor, and I hate when creators base characters on actors.

True. But for the record: I never heard his voice, I was simply aware that he looked like Nick Fury... somehow I never considered that he might sound like Nick Fury as well. Perhaps I just didn't recognize the dialogue. Or am bad at remember people's voices.

DC wouldn't do it, though... DC's editorial are, almost absolutely, older DC fans... which means their main goal is to get back to the silver age, not push things into any modern or post-modern mold. That's why instead of the Ultimate line, they made the All Star line, which is like Ultimate, but instead of being modern, it's goal is to bring back all the great silver age stuff. All-Star Batman may take a Authority-like tack, but his setup is all Silvery. DC can barely manage to keep it's post-80s characters ALIVE, much less reinvent the old ones to look like they were made in the present day.

That Wizard article is as close as were going to get until the next Crisis On Infinite Earths. If COIE took place in 85, and Batman and Superman have been running around since 1940, then you can expect your "Ultimate DC" to replace their entire universe around 2030. That's my guess. Yeah, it's 13 years away, but at least we're halfway there!

Thanks for posting them though Artistsean... we're just all bitter in our own special ways, that's all.

And much like the Ultimate line after Marvel started modernizing a lot of its 616 comics, the All-Star line is now obsolete given that Morrison and Johns are bringing all sorts of Silver Age elements back to the mainstream Batman and Superman titles.
