Viola Davis' Amanda Waller Posted In This Thread, Then Threw Away The Thread!

She could be the Nick Fury of the DCCU. Only she's a baddie.

Well... No. Waller is not a villain in the least and I would hate to see that be changed. If that's the impression one gets from say, ASSAULT ON ARKHAM, then it is a mistaken one. I also would hate her being "Fury" lite, or forming the JL or any of the things Fury is in the MCU. She can be in JL without having her character ape Sam Jackson's Nick Fury in any way.

I do want Viola Davis to appear in Wonder Woman as Waller if the scheduling works out even if it's just a small part say a conversation with Steve Trevor or General Swanwick. I imagine due to her HTGAWM schedule, it would need to shot in between hiatuses from the show.

I agree. She can cross franchises, but not as some sort of link. Just her climbing up the ladder within government.

That would be an awesome way to continue the connectivity of this DC cinematic universe.

Lol poor Batman. Everyone wants to see him get owned by Waller.

You guys actually think Batfleck is going to let Waller yell at him and not throw shade back?! They'll both get their digs in and Bats will leave while Waller will think how intimidating that was since he was the bomb in Phantoms.

Waller may yell at the Fleck but he won't be impressed, let alone intimidated. I can see a great dynamic between Bats and the Wall. But things Waller knows are what may get Batman's impressed.

God, I'm so freaking happy that Davis landed the part. She is going to KILL it!

Well.....yes, she is a villain, just not an extreme one. http://villains.wikia.com/wiki/Amanda_Waller

She can walk the good and bad line at times. If one doesn't get that impression from Assault on Arkham then it is a mistaken one. I'm not expecting her to form the JL. A villain type doesn't do that, they form the Suicide Squad, a clan of baddies.

Um... Yeah, that's all a big, "Huh?"

1. A fan wiki is the last place to get the last word on anything. Anyone familiar with the character since the 80's will tell you that at best she is an anti-hero type but, no, Waller is NOT A VILLAIN. Period.

2. Assault on Arkham, as much as I liked it, whiffs it on that particular element. It is a very far outlier in terms of her characterization across media, especially considering her comic book version and the version from JLU. Which is why I said that to take the AA version as a very accurate representation of the history of the character would be mistaken, which I think would be clear to anyone that clearly read the post you are responding to.

3. If she's a "villain" for forming the Suicide Squad (a group of villains used by legitimate authority often to fight OTHER villains for the greater good and safety of society) then I suppose Rick Flagg is a villain too, for leading them? Sorry... That's all classic fanboy jibber jabber. You are wrong. Plain and simple and anyone that has a knowledge of the character that DOES NOT come exclusively from the AA DTV knows this. Which by the way, again, was my point about her characterization in that mini movie.

The majority of my experience of Amanda Waller mostly comes from the Justice League cartoon and the new 52 Suicide Squad. I never really thought of her as a villain in either one. In Justice League she leads CADMUS, a group that opposes the Justice League but I felt that her reasons for not trusting the Justice League were rational. In the new 52 Suicide Squad ( I've only read volumes 1-3) the first mission she sent them on was to contain a zombie outbreak that happened in a football stadium and the recurring opponent that she sends them to fight is a terrorist organisation call Basilisk.

Not my fault if you don't get it.

It's not a fan wiki it's a villains wik, with over 35'000 pages on it.

Nope, Waller in the comics made her own Suicide Squad of villains, too. Assault on Arkham got it dead right. You're wrong.

That's the same as saying how can Ra's Al Ghul be a baddie when all he wants to do is save the planet? Forming the Suicide Squad's just one example of her villainy.

You're wrong. Plan and simple. And my info ain't just coming from AOA. You'd know that if you read comics with Waller in them.

It's still Wikipedia FFS.:funny:

The old man knows what's he's talknig about. And yes Waller is not a flat out villain.

Why don't we just compromise and call her an antagonist?

Waller's a tweener. She tends to walk the line, between protagonist and antagonist. Extreme and questionable measures for the greater good.

Then Nick Fury and the measures he took along the MCU would make him a villain too?

I also don't consider her a villain, but neither a hero. He cares for the weak and don't give a **** about the villains. but she sees everything for the good of his country.

A tweener would be a better fit depending on the situation she's handling.

Yeah... Kid I've been reading Waller since LEGENDS. You sir/madam obviously know NOTHING, or at the least are unwilling to admit that your exposure is LIMITED. But... That's apparent from your posting history since you first showed up. You TRY so terribly hard... And fail. This failure is more spectacular than others though, because it's a simple case of willful obtuse opinion despite being so very wrong.

A bit of a refresher course as to the actual history of Task Force X, AKA The Suicide Squad, since it's pretty obvious some around here need it, given that they equate Amanda Waller with Super Villains like Lex Luthor or the Squad with groups like The Legion Of Doom or the Masters Of Evil...

I've always seen her as a "morally grey" type of character who's neither hero nor villain. She usually has good intentions behind what she does, but is willing to resort to "questionable" means (and sometimes even outright reprehensible ones) in order to accomplish her goals. She's closer to being an anti-hero/anti-villain (depending on your perspective) than anything else.

If we lived in an actual world with actual metahumans in it, somebody like Amanda Waller would be almost essential for humanity's survival. I hope the movie makes it clear that's she's not really in it for herself, but really is humanity's first and last line of defence.

Exactly. She's never been a "villain" but she's done unsavory things, but they are for usually very good and defensible reasons. The ASSAULT ON ARKHAM characterization was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY off. She was just a cast iron, cold blooded rhymes with witch in that. No nuance, texture or subtlety. Her just blowing KGBeasts head off was not in character. It was a cheap laugh that ultimately shaded her in that film as merely a cold blooded killer. It's an outlier interms of her character across media. Now... Can Walker be practical to the point of cold bloodedness? Yeah, I would say that's accurate. But she's rarely done anything for self gain. She does stuff as a loyal American and for the good of the world as she sees it. Now, that can get hazy real fast, but it's quite a few degrees of separation from full on super villainy.

Amanda Waller's a pretty interesting character. Her life before working for government was rough. First son killed. Daughter raped and murdered. Husband killed. She put her remaining her children through college and got herself through, determined to get better lives for all of them. She was a hardened woman before the Suicide Squad.

I hope Ayer references her backstory. Viola Davis is going to knock this one out.

I hope they do go into that or at least allude to it so they can explore it in future films. I figure Viola signed onto this for a reason; I doubt the character is as thinly developed as she is on Arrow, lol.
