I think there's no reason to think that Singer wouldn't deliver a Superman sequel equivalent to how X2 was to X1.
Xmen 1 was in intro film- and did it great. The action was weak, but it got better with the second one.
Similiarly, for my two cents, the only real thing missing from SR was a strong villain to bring out Superman's sense of power. The drama was brilliantly done, imo- but what I hope WB realizes that if every movie is a gamble- (and in a sense it is).... having a filmmaker with Singer's resume is the safest bet around for a sequel to make beaucoup bucks.
I'm still in awe that WB doesn't get that SR COULD have been a SERIOUS boxoffice disaster--- and it wasn't. It was a modest hit---- just like Batman Begins was!!!
Simliarly, just as TDK was able to springboard from the first film, EVERYTHING Singer has said should have totally made WB and fans happy.... he WANTS and INTENDED more action for the sequel.... and had at least TWO (the original writers hinted that there was more than one villain for the sequel at the time they were interviewed) villains planned for the sequel---
What more can anyone ask of Singer to do for a sequel???
He wants to do an action packed sequel with a new villain, and fans (and non-fans) of SR want a new Superman film with more action and a new villain.
Just not a reboot. That's going backwards, even with flashbacks.... not to mention the creative damage of gambling with recasting an unknown.
Singer has a knack for casting unknowns.... but how on earth could WB ASSUME that another actor for a Superman film would have people accepting him right off the bat?
(*If WB wants to use the Hulk 2 example of recasting and rebooting without damage, that doesn't hold water--- because NOBODY thought Eric Bana was the perfect Bruce Banner to begin with! Edward Norton was a lot closer to Banner than Bana... I can't find anyone on the internet who would disagree with that)
Stick with Singer and stick with Routh, imo..... that's the safest bet, if WB cares about stockholders' money....
Where to begin on this.
Superman needs a re-boot; it's now been 30+ years that Superman flicks have been stuck in the alleged "Donner-verse". I admit that before SR, I thought Singer was onto something; post-SR, I am now squarely in the camp for relaunching the franchise from the ground up. In fact, as much as I love the Williams theme, if that has to be one more casualty to getting a Superman movie worthy of today's era, then so be it.
And while I liked Routh's physical look (still have major issues on that suit), he needs to go with Singer. You can't reboot a franchise by keeping stars from the old film. It wouldn't make any sense, for one, and second, it would mean we'd be once again stuck to the Jason garbage.
And on that note, no one from "Smallville" should be in this movie, either. It'll only cause massive confusion and likely turn away casual viewers who don't follow the show. And BTW, ratings for Smallville are pretty horrible. Further, if you have Welling, you'd need to bring Durance, too, as well as any of the other necessary Superman characters.
What the movie needs is a fresh break from SR and the Donner-verse. Bring in a new name for the Man of Steel, but surround him with high recognition/high caliber stars. This means bringing in someone like Naomi Watts, Evangeline Lilly, or Katherine Heigl to play Lois Lane; Anthony Hopkins or Ian McKellen to play Jor-El. And get solid writers; bring in the DC gurus Morrison, Millar, and Loeb. But also get pulitizer bigshots such as Michael Chabon to do a rewrite. Finally, be open to the visionaries like Lee, Ross, and Byrne. I don't mean you have to do what anyone here says, but the director has to incorporate and adopt feedback from these people. They are the guideposts for making sure the next Superman movie is what it should be: a fresh start that still builds on what has come before it in terms of story, depth of characters, action, and special effects.
That Singer and co. didn't ever bother to get any thoughts from DC is the exact kind of hubris this new production can do without.
If WB and DC want Superman to be its next Batman level franchise (and it can be), get the right talent and buzz behind it.
