Anything is possible but I don't see it becoming a cult hit just because you want it to. You can't tell the future anymore than I can so get the cult hit DVD bull-ish out of your head already. Everytime one of these movies fails some strange fans come out of the woodwork and say that "the movie is going to become a cult hit." It's become pathetic ritual.

Heh, heh!! It's funny, you know, it's like you want the dvd to fail.

Anyway, I think it's safe to say that Daredevil, Ang Lee's Hulk and The Punisher 04' are cult classics.

I expected at least good performances, I've never been to New York, but I'm pretty not everyone there sounds like they are from Brooklyn.

It's a pretty bad movie, plain and simple.

Those were some of the worst accents in movie history , they should of hired ex soprano/goodfella actors . there are plenty of guys who pop up in all these ganster flciks that are doing straight to dvd movies that could have at least enriched this film with decent acting . the guy in the wheelchair was horrible. it was a relief when frank would kill some of these guys.

it's hard for a dvd to fail. especially considering all the crap they keep on the shelf at blockbuster.

None of those films are considered classics of any kind. I'm going to stop talking to you about this subject because you are obviously living in a land of make-believe.

Ok, okay, maybe it'a a little too early to call them cult classics, maybe, but they are getting there. Close. They are certainly films with a strong fan base.

Doesn't being a cult classic suggest the movie being a hit with a specific group but unpopular with the majority, or general public (for example The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter and the Evil Dead series)? If that's the case then yeah, those movies are well on their way to cult classics if they're not there already.

I think it's safe to say this will become a popular cult/action title on dvd, judging by the films that have enjoyed that distinction in the past. And I don't see why anyone would think it would take a long time for that to happen. It's become much easier for people to keep up with a film's dvd release date than its theatrical one, thanks to the dvd sales/rentals industry. They may not make it out to the theater, but they'll click a button online.

The audience required to make this a cult hit isn't likely to have the same problems that posters here do. This movie has a guy getting his face punched in. Literally. Do you really think someone sitting around with a beer is going to say, "Wait. I was expecting this to be a serious examination of the Frank Castle character."?

I'm just not convinced that a serious-minded Punisher film would've fared much better, if given the same pitiful marketing campaign and weak release date. Studios avoid the weekend after Thanksgiving like the plague, because they realize theater turnout is always dismal.

Even though the film has a terrible critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, its user rating has actually risen over the past few days. It's a rare case of a modern superhero film being campy, yet still generating some positive word of mouth. The film may not treat the source material as literature, but it does have a set of R-rated balls attached to it. There's definitely a dvd audience out there that responds to that quality in an action movie.

Yep. You got it.

I most positively agree with you.

I suppose Catwoman will become a classic too.

There's no real argument to be made in its case. It didn't generate any positive word of mouth upon release, and wasn't true to the character.

But Punisher: War Zone has already achieved both. I don't care how badly someone would've preferred a faithful adaption of, say, The Slavers...when Frank Castle blows that guy's face off with a shotgun, it's pretty damn true to the character.

:unishr:

If it generated such positive word of mouth, the reviews would not be so mixed and the movie would not be making so little.

Save for a handful of people around here, I haven't heard any positive word of mouth. It's all been lukewarm or negative.

The movie will not be looked upon as a masterpiece. Period. It just won't. I don't see why that matters to the people who loved the film? I just don't.

I'm quite sure that most folk who've seen the film aren't going to see the film as the greatest flick ever or even in the top 1000 action flicks. I'm happy that alot of the messageboard fanboy like it but in the real world I expect bad word of mouth, a huge drop off this coming weekend and huge theater drops after that.

He's saying that, unlike Catwoman which didn't please neither the fan base nor the masses, PWZ did please the fan base a great deal.

Not classic. Cult classic. I wouldn't consider Schindler's List a cult classic just like I wouldn't consider Evil Dead a classic. Who knows if Catwoman will have people quoting it and dressing up at conventions in a few years like The Rocky Horror Picture Show does.

Well guys I got to hit the hay. It's been...interesting discussing this movies boxoffice but it's 1:45am and a growing girl needs her rest.

I'll leave you with these words:

Sorry that the Punisher is f**ked for atleast 10 years.

Peace and good night.

I also provided a specific example, citing that its user rating has actually risen on Rotten Tomatoes. You generally don't see that happen when a movie's critical score is in the teens.

This is not to say that the film has, or will have, strong word-of-mouth among casual moviegoers. Just that is has generated a degree of positive word of mouth among its intended audience.

73% of members polled on this site have said it's worth checking out. You can also find plenty of people saying, "Hey, this was actually a pretty entertaining film" on most movie sites. Its IMDB rating is currently 7/10, which is also surprisingly strong for a movie with lousy reviews and a $4 million opening weekend. You'd expect such a combination to be met with a rating somewhere down in the 2-3/10 territory.

Normally when a comicbook film veers into camp, it generates a negative backlash that is fairly consistent. The main difference this time is that the movie didn't pull its punches, and audiences- particularly the youthful fanboy crowd- tend to respect that quality in an R-rated film.

PUNISHED by genre fans...it makes me sick.

Maybe they should now take all three Punisher movies and put em in a blender, see if we get something we all really needed.

nope. look at the results of the fan review thread, they are mostly positive. look at the community rating on rottentomatoes, it's at 76%. i think it's fair to say that this film has been well received by most fans.

No. Not a masterpiece, ofcourse, but.....well, let me put this in pespective:

Let's say you're a music fan. A rock fan, specifically. In your cd case or shelf you have mostly vintage rock albums like Pink Floyd's "The Wall", Queen's "A Night At The Opera", The Beatles' "Abbey Road", or U2's "Joshua Tree". But among all those albums of heart & soul, somewhere there in that cd case you have Kiss' "Destroyer" and Def Leppard's "Pyromania"! Are these two albums masterpieces like The Wall or A Night At The Opera? Hell no! Not even close. But they're both still pretty badass albums to listen to every now and then. And that's what PWZ would be as a dvd title. It's no Dark Knight or Iron Man, but it's still kickass fun.
