Agreed Shape. I think the Punisher needs a name to play him and a new studio in order to have any possible future success. Without anything to attract people other than violence, then no one will ever care.

I'd say wait 10-15 years before even THINKING about making a new Punisher movie. Then, hopefully a new studio will reevaluate the character and find a way to bring him to the screen in an interesting way. With a solid budget, great marketing, and a decent cast for once, there might be a chance of success. I wouldn't mind seeing a Punisher movie set in the 80s or 90s. So if the next film comes out 2018, it will have a distinct feel and will be far enough away from the previous films that people may forget about them.

Yup, and it's on FX every week now. After rewatching it, it's not horrible. The finale is the best on-screen Punisher we've seen, I feel. That whole movie is Frank becoming the Punisher, and he doesn't truly do that until he goes after Saint and his men.

Agreed. Frank has a real arc and changes into the Punisher in the movie, as seen by the final line of the movie being "Frank Castle is dead. Call me The Punisher." It was a much better rounded movie than this one. Sure, he spends most of the movie plotting, but that is part of Frank's arc. This movie, Frank's arc is shallow and almost non-existant.

15 is a bit much, but I'd wait at least 8 for another attempt.

It came in at number 8 for the weekend with 4.3mil, one of the worse openings for a movie in wide release. It's not going to suddenly get Titantic style legs and sell 10 million DVD's. It's dead in the water, deal with it.

I don't know about "Titanic style legs", but I'm willing to bet it will sell enough DVD's to make it a recognizeable cult classic. Deal with it.:cwink:

We're lucky if we ever see another theatrically-released Punisher movie at this point, thanks to PWZ.

This is very true. I think if a studio wanted to, 8 years would wash away the stigma. But, that is the problem at this point. Studios won't touch it theatrically now.

Financially, yes. It had less competition. Critically, PWZ owns.

Dude, what are you smoking? The '04 Punisher currently has 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, while PWZ has 17%.

And as for competition, PWZ (opened in 2,508 locations) essentially had one new semi-wide release to compete with, Cadillac Records (opened in 686 locations), which it barely beat. Even with virtually no competition, it made less than $5 million. That's awful.

Less competition? It went up against Kill Bill Vol. 2, and then Man on Fire the next week and was still just shy of making back its shooting budget. PWZ had Cadillac Records to go up against. And critically, going by Rotten Tomatoes 29% for The Punisher, up against 17% for PWZ, you have it the other way PWZ got owned.

Didn't The Punisher open with some solid competition, to boot? Punisher: War Zone opened with the biggest other contender in the action movie genre being The Transporter 3. There's quite a difference.

Most of the reviews at Yahoo movies state that PWZ is an improvement over the 04' version. And as far as fans are concerned, of all 3 films this is the definitive Punisher film.

And Transporter 3 opened last week...ouch.

Well, not to be offensive to you or the other fans who feels this way, ut you guys must have low standards because I think we've yet to get a definitive Punisher film.

PWZ was also released at a wrong time(December).

Well, first of all, I said it was the most definitive compared to the previous films. And second, no offense, but maybe you'r just not a true Punisher fan.

There's a positive aspect to all this, you know.

None of the bootleggers seem to be showing up for screenings. :-/

What makes a true Punisher fan then, is only giving a **** about the violence and not giving a **** about an actually good story or good dialogue?

A true Punisher fan wants entertainment. Laughs, thrills, and lots of firepower. PWZ gave us that.

Yes, entertainment is good. But a strong story to boot also helps and no matter how good I feel about the new movie I will always believe the '04 had a stronger story. WZ's story is pretty weak but the performances and strong visual quality make up for it.

I will always love the JH's first draft of his proposed WZ. The story was much better and a lot deeper. At least that's how I read into it!

The performances were for the most part pretty bad in PWZ.

I haven't seen the movie, and (no offense to anyone) since this movie is tanking, maybe that's a good thing. Maybe the rights will go back to Marvel and they can make the ultimate Punisher movie. Or one idea someone had was an HBO series...that would be a perfect vehicle for the Punisher.

The story is very underdeveloped, I agree. I would compare it in a way to Tim Burton's Batman, in that the story is not solid, but there is alot going on that is very gripping and you forgive it. Same with War Zone, I felt.
