"every action i take no matter how violent it is is for the greater good of my people"

that sums it all right there

why travel so long to get to earth and get the codex from kal el and then go search for another planet when he is on one

A barren empty planet called Mars, with no sentient life is like not to far away. Easy terraform and no resistance. Oh one of the other 7 might due

Maybe he was "programmed" to have obsession with earth?

It's risk management. Zod kinda sucks at it. He should talk to George Costanza.

When you think about it...he got caught pretty easily on Krypton as well. They could have used a better planner altogether.

Like years back, he threw a troop picnic...and they all got salmonella.....

I can't speak for everyone, but I know I cared that a bunch of buildings with people potentially inside them were collapsing.

Weird, I know.

And Superman looked plenty bothered by it.

I cared at first but after like the 50th skyscraper toppled I had just become numb to all the carnage. After a certain point it was just kind of crass.

I just can't reconcile the Superman who made smoochy time with Lois on a pile of the dead instead of immediately leaping into action to rescue people with the Superman depicted below. To put in context (from All Star Superman issue 10 - widely considered the best issue of Superman since the 80s). Superman is dying. This is one of his last few days on Earth. He is trying to accomplish every good deed he can. Curing cancer, saving Lois one last time, etc. He has just saved Lois, the love of his life. But he hears a doctor screaming at their patient to "hold on, I'm coming". He flies off from Lois despite wanting to stay and talk to her.

Then this:

all-star-superman-10.jpg

That's Superman. Not "Hey, SOOOOOO many people are dead but I caught you Lois. Let's swap spit"

And you know they're in the buildings? Or is this film breaking its internal logic for stylization's sake, such when Bruce wrecks the police cars with people inside, while somehow avoiding carnage (in Begins I think)?

I've moaned about the things I didn't like but here are the changes I would have made if I were a producer for this one.

1. Flesh out the young Clark scenes
In a 2 and half hour movie these are the only moments that really resonated with me so I would either have liked to see more or linger longer on the scenes we got.

2. Way too many Kryptonians
Needed to be stripped down to a maximum of 3. The entire time I was thinking why aren't all the aliens attacking en masse? I don't care what the reason was why they weren't attacking, that is what I was thinking the entire time. So if they aren't attacking, aren't contributing, why have them?
The uniqueness of Superman was diluted by having so many aliens.

3. Superman's introduction to the world goes in a flash.
Think of the Donner movie where the introduction of Superman is truly special. A simply Helicopter catch and the entire world watches and cheers.
People can defend the movie but I didn't feel that stand up and cheer moment, not once, and that is the hand on heart honest truth.

4. Any repetition is a movie is redundant and an redundancy should be cut.
In the final battle I felt I was watching the same thing over and over again and that got real boring real quick. Think Matrix where Neo is fighting the 100 agents Smiths, the first few minutes where exciting and then I was thinking is there an ending to this fight somewhere in my future. I didn't have a clock to time the end battle but if it were 20 minutes then it needed to be 10 minutes.
Every minute saved then should have been reinvested into character scenes.

5. The Lois and Clark dynamic had no chemistry
Say what you will about Amazing Spider-Man you felt the love of the leads for each other and wanted them to end up together. In the closing scenes Superman kisses Lois but how they got there simply wasn't fleshed out, at least not for me. Why did Lois want to be with Lois beyond him being hot and why was Clark so hot for Lois? This relationship needed a lot more work to convince me these two loved each other. Everyone knows Lois and Clark are 'supposed' to be together but SHOW me why the end up together.

6. The Aliens powers were very nebulas
I couldn't tell if they were stronger than Superman, weaker than Superman, if they could fly or not and so on. I needed someone to tell me the rules.
The movie was exposition heavy for scenes that didn't need it and vague when rules should have been laid out.

7. Have less steady cams
I know 'shaky cam' is supposed to make things like realistic and gritty but there was too much of it.

8. Pa death was handled horribly
I would be lying if I said I didn't feel anything but I could and should have felt a lot more with a few changes;
1. Make it a child Pa is saving rather than a dog. Apologises to dog lovers everywhere but the scene would have had more stakes if it were a human child than an animal that is in peril
2. Make the reason Clark doesn't save his dad that he is multi tasking and when he realises his dad is about to be killed there is no why he can get there is time. No way would I stand there and watch m dad die if I had the power to save him and I don't care if the world sees that. They needed a better reason for Clark not to save his dad.
3. The tornado is as gentle to Pa as mother picking up her new born babe.
I'm no tornado expert but I doubt a person being sucked into a vortex would be like THAT.

8. Have a scene where Metropolis mourns its dead
The death of hundreds of thousands is callously swept under the carpet and that really really bothered me. One scene of mourning, one scene of building construction for the new city would have helped me a lot.

9. Superman seems to have a disregard for life.
There was one scene in particular when Superman is fighting in a field with Zod and flys him into a town. I'm sorry but that should be the other way round the fighting should start in a town and because Superman doesn't want anyone hurt he should fly Zod to a field.

It got to the stage where I'm wondering why Superman was so bothered by the four humans who were about to get heat visioned by Zod when he was privy to hundreds of thousand meeting their demise.
Superman should have had a scene where he says (probably to the military) that he isn't going in until the city is evacuated, even if that evacuation doesn't happen at least it would show he is afraid of the mass deaths that would result in a superhuman fight.

:oI'd die for my dog

man's best friend bro

I agree with most of the complaints here but my biggest one is not so much that he killed Zod, but HOW he killed him. Snapping someones neck is so out of character for superman. I think if they really wanted to have Superman kill him, there are better ways to have gone about it. Just my opinion.

you know for those who dont like the shaky camera effect (those like me:p), there's always programs like Adobe After Effects CS5, which can eliminate the shaky cam

for example?

Maybe, but he didn't have the luxury in that moment.

Oh, I hate that song they play after the oil rig scene, when he's stealing clothes. Takes me outta' the movie every time.

To an extent...but it doesn't always distinguish a camera shake from a handheld pan, for example.

only action scene i didn't like was jor el vs kryptonians it was'nt badly choreographed the camera was just so close in that you can barely tell what was going on

I also felt it was a bit too quick and somewhat gruesome. I would have preferred to maybe set up a strangle or slower suffocation to see Superman struggling a little more with the horrible decision.

You guys remember 'I Am Legend"...when he has to choke his dog to death as it turns into a monster? Something along those lines, but obviously not with the 'love' between them.

better than nothing, though- wouldnt you agree?

Depends on what you have to use it for....and some things it cant help without having to zoom the original frame in a lot.

It doesn't explain why only Earth would do.

Yeah but he said and it showed you they had been to other planets where the Kryptonian outposts were and they all died. I think he needed the planet with the best resources.

Yeah I noticed that too, gave me flashbacks of Batman Begins (where I actually found it really effective) and the Bourne Supremacy (where it just annoyed the hell out of me).

They were all dead on Earth, too.

Lois wanted him for being hot ? did you miss the monologue in which she expresses admiration for the "guardian angel" and then says it to his face, that she doesn't think he's ever gonna stop helping people.

There's also a part where he says he's not sure he can trust humans, and then it's Lois the one who abandons her story and almost loses her beloved job to protect his identity, and then even after getting arrested she still refuses to reveal his identity. He was clearly impressed by this and tells her himself, how it made a difference to him.

They're not ending the movie already married you know, this was just supposed to establish trust, friendship, attraction. The early stages of their love.

They didn't have all their powers in control yet. No they couldn't fly, there's a scene near the end where Zod finally flies and by the way it's filmed (Zod tearing up his armor, rising in a dramatic way) and all that epic music I thought it was very clear THIS was the only moment another kryptonian flew. what didn't you understand? Zod even tells Jor-el that it'd take them years of suffering just to adjust to be able to reach that level of powers on earth, and Clark gives Zod a lecture on how he has already learnt all that. You needed someone to tell you the rules? well, they did.

I understand people having complains, I have A LOT myself, It's just frustrating to read some things that are already explained or obvious.

Well maybe what I wanted wasn't rules but consistency. The Aliens powers in Superman 2 are much better defined and consistent with the exception of the telekinetic finger ray.
