I would have had Pa Kent escort Clark away from tornado in protective fashion, Clark pleading to help, but Pa insisting he stay away...and have Pa Kent save some more people, instead of a friggin dog...and then when Pa Kent is in danger...Clark rushes in to save him, but he doesn't make it, and Pa says his final words to Clark that he loves him and wants the best for him. Clark feels guilt thinking if he had been more assertive, defied his father, showed him that now is the time for him to step in, stepped out of his father's shadow, he could have saved the day. The people of Smallville sees it, start questioning some more...then Clark just runs away (after saying bye to his Mom) to discover himself...and he becomes an urban legend.
I think that would have been a better way to handle it then Pa Kent standing there sticking out his palm and disappearing in the wind like a ghost...knowing that his son is now going to face adulthood suddenly without his Dad.
