OK, so there are numbers of topics where we are discussing the different flaws of the movie, but I wanted to make this topic so we can figure out what is exactly missing in Spider-Man 3 that didn't make it as good as 1 and 2 (based on the variety of opinions we read).

Please, let's try not to talk about exact scenes or moments, most of them are already discussed out there.

For me, it has to be the ton of subplots, new characters (Gwen Stacy, Cap. Stacy, Flint Marko, Eddie Brock, the symbiote and the black suit arc), new villains (New Goblin, Venom, Sandman, the symbiote itself) and the lack of development of them, which I'm sure there's a much longer version of the film in which we actually have more scenes with Sandman/Marko and Venom/Brock. This additions, I bet, would surely add some more action scenes (or extended of the ones they showed; the subway battle comes to my mind right now; I remember Arad said it was better than the train sequence ). This would also explain how the flow of the movie has been affected, and why many scenes may look as 'rushed' or out of place (named as plot holes, lazy writing or however you wanna call it).

I must say I don't mind the jazz cafe, or the dancing sequences. The previous movies had this little moments in between, but everything was balanced. In this one, since there's not enough black spidey, this scenes are more noticed than the ones on the previous movie. I thought the dance sequence with Gwen was well done, call it cheesy, but it was well done, I did enjoy it So again, it all reduces to the lack of scenes to contrast this moments (I named mainly the black Spider-Man sequences cause are the ones that fit in this cheesy scenes -2nd act of the movie?-).

The movie isn't bad for me, in fact is a very good third part of a trilogy. Not many trilogies still have many stories to tell and be interesting at the same time. The Spider-Man franchise has that advantage. My opinion is that the success of the previous film and the amount of posibilities of the Spider-Man entire history (in terms of stories and characters) made the writers don't know exactly which one to tell and to focus on, or once the movie was made, to edit.

I might aswell add that I was overhyped, the promotion of the movie has been exhaustive and I'm gonna admit being in this forums increased my positive feelings towards the film, those feeling being turned into a slight disappoinment for all the reasons I posted earlier.

D!

People overhyped and expected too much. ESPECIALLY Venom.

It seems that most people who had a problem with it wanted Venom/Sandman to be developed more.

I was satisfied. Although I was looking forward to having the scene where Maryjane comes home and see's the figure in the bathroom (expecting spider-man) but then she see's the teeth form, and screams XD

My main reasons for being let down were the overwhelming chessiness and the fact that they crammed way too much stuff into the movie. If they actually fleshed out any one of the story-lines, they would have been good, but throwing all of them together was just too much. Instead of one great story, we got 3 subpar ones.

I loved the movie. But that would be my only complaint, too crammed. That's why there's a load of deleted scenes that involved character development, like Eddie visiting Gwen at her house and getting dumped for good, calling him a stalker, furthering his descent into desparation and darkness. Sandman and the doctor that needs money to save his daughter. Sandman's family at the Battle Royale. All that and more was cut.

SuperHeroHype even had a headline saying Sony made Raimi recut the movie and take out the drama scenes in place for more action. Check the deleted scenes thread people!

I have to echo the feeelings of the previous 2 post. I'm very curious to see what is on the DVD and how it would have improved the story.....
Do they do that on purpose?

Anybody else getting tired of having to wait for extended cuts to get decent movies?

It was very campy, but that didn't bug me as much as the overall flow of the movie. Scenes just felt out of place. Plus Christopher Young's additon to the score pissed me off.

I liked the movie, but there was just too much stuff going on. Venom and/or Sandman needed to be cut from this movie.

That, and the hype was so big that people would bound to be let down.

Raimi's humouir in Spiderman movies have always been stinky IMO. But now he simply dropped it and thought that more of the same for longer time and with more intensity of the ridiculous angle was going to be better.

That's it right there. And Sandman just wasn't that emotionally captivating.

Doc Ock was a thousand times cooler.

Venom being underused was my main problem with it. Otherwise the same as most posts above me.

I didn't hate it and it wasn't a complete let down, I just felt there was too much going on in one movie, it either needed to be spaced out over two movies or have all the little useless scenes (like the dancing, I liked it, but it wasn't necessary) removed and replaced with elements that would've helped progress/develop the story/characters better.

Well, my reaction while watching the movie was:
"This isn't the movie I was expecting."

I think that was it for me. After watching all of the trailers, I was expecting something else. I thought it might be a little darker, more moody and emotional. I was really looking forward to those things, so when I didn't get them, it was a let down for me.

However, as I was watching the movie, I also noticed that I was really enjoying the characters, comedy, twists, and emotions of the movie. I loved the direction that the movie went it, but since it was not what I was expecting, I was let down. Still, I liked how the movie played out. I loved the emotions of Pete, Harry and MJ, the villians and their births/deaths, and yes, Peter's dancing, etc.. I think that after I see the movie again, now knowing and keeping in mind what kind of movie it is, I will enjoy it very, very much.

Same here, overall, I really enjoyed the movie except for the above.

I like the fact that it was darker and I liked the comedy/drama of it.

Under utilized Venom and how he's written out at the end...very disappointing...still sweet to finally see him on the big screen, though!

no but seriously the way ppl are making it out to be u'd think it was that bad...

so many ppl i know are skipping this because the reviews and comments or word of mouth is making it out to be as bad as the those

those are examples of
"cheesiness"
"too much, too many"
(villians, heroes, plot devices)

I'll be the first to say this pales in comparison to spidey2. What doesn't? Certainly not the two new DC movies...they're flat and ill concieved(Especially superman)

but this is a solid enough movie for everyone to consider a good movie, maybe not great...but this controversy is getting ppl thinking we're back in the late 90s of comic book movies

same goes for X3

maybe we've just set too high our expectations due to how well their 1st sequels were!

with the exception of blade trinity..that sucked my balls

I wasn't expecting that much because I don't like Venom to begin with. I did however expect to learn a BIT more about the symbiote other than it fell out of the sky. That is just lazy writing, which can be understandable since Sam Raimi never wanted the character in the movie in the first place.

Another things that bothers me is the fact that Sam Raimi tried to make Peter Parker both evil and funny and succeded in none.

 that's exactly the answer to the question. People's expectations, and given the opportunity, subsequent refusal to adjust them.

They expected something better than SM2 which was nearly flawless.

They got a decent movie that wrapped up the storylines well but felt uneven and poorly paced due to too many storylines (because they wanted Venom in so much) and the one that they wanted to see was cut down for the BETTER plot thread of Peter/MJ/Harry (much better than seeing Venom just rip off GG from the first movie for an extra 20 minutes).

It had too much going on. It also was the broadest in humor and while it worked, perhaps going from dark to light, to really freaking light and back to dark turned some people off.

I personally think it was hyped to be the best of the three in the marketing and it wasn't. Hence general audiences (and myself) going, "well too bad, it was still a pretty good movie. Slightly disappointing compared to the first two" and then you have then fanboys, "THEY KILLED VENOM!!! WHAAAAA! Comedy? There's no comedy in Spider-Man?"

For all those who didn't like the dance montage, which is being blown way out of proportion as 2 minutes of comic relief after 3 or 4 really dark scenes, need to avoid Army of Darkness, Evil Dead and DArkman as it is Sam Raimi basically doing the humor he had been "mostly" supressing in the first two save for the fight in high school, the wrestling match and the raindrops sequence, which were all just as cheesy but when it is fighting and not dancing people don't mind as much.

contrivances. way too many. a lot of things were out of character for any of these characters. pete asking gwen to kiss him infront of MJ and million of people, instead of gwen asking to kiss spiderman, doesnt make much sense.

if you loved the first 2 movies for the right reasons (good laid out storyline, motivation for villian nicely established, good flow) then its understandable why this 3rd movie just went against everything the series was about. its like sam and the team went "well we did great the first 2 times around lets just forget about how much careful effort we put into this franchise and the hell with it".

the dance scenes werent bad, i can understand why they were there. but a lot of people were fed up with the movie before those scenes which is why the payoff of the humor wasnt there. its like you start joking around when you havent shown us a decent story before you got to the jokes.
