DOCTOR STRANGE
Doctor Strange the Sorcerer Supreme gets his big screen debut and it's quite a debut.
Benedict Cumberbatch is perfectly cast as Strange. An arrogant but extremely gifted doctor his life is completely turned around after a car accident destroys the nerves in his hands.Hoping to restore his once steady hands he journeys to Kathmandu, Nepal in order to restore them.
There he finds Ancient One who opens up whole new worlds and dimensions to him and a new destiny that will also put the villain Kaecilius on his new path in life
Doctor Strange is highly entertaining and very well acted, everyone truly gives their all.
Sometimes in films like this the romance can be a bit lacking but in this film the bond and relationship between Strange and Christine Palmer(Rachel McAdams) A fellow surgeon of Strange really works because of some particularly strong scenes between the two.
Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo turns in a strong performance as does Benedict Wong as Wong with some nice touches of humor.
There was some controversy in the casting of Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One but all murmuring and disapproval should fade after watching her performance.
The SFX are beautiful, flawless eye popping, and glorious. So much eye candy and then some.I expect the people behind the SFX to get several awards, for providing such a surreal ,mesmerizing head trip.
The flaws: I would have liked to have seen Kaecilius fleshed out more even though Mads Mikkelsen gives his best with what he had to work with.
I have watched a lot of super hero films and T.V shows featuring legendary characters and at times i have been dissapointed because either the character doesnt take a hold of his powers or strengths until the end of the film or show.
In Doctor Strange it felt a little rushed as the character somewhat easily takes a hold of his new strengths.
Sure i know i want watching a NETFLIX series with 13 episodes for development and i know a lot has to be done in a 2 hour running time but i would have like to have seen more of a struggle to grasp the new mystic arts.
In the end i was highly entertained and Doctor Strange will easily fit right in with the other characters that reside in the Marvel cinematic universe.
Scale of 1-1 an 8½
HACKSAW RIDGE
Despite his personal problems and crazy rants,Mel Gibson is a good director.I remember back in 1995 my videotape of the film Braveheart went around the office several times and we all raved about it.Gibson proves again that he has the Directors eye in Hacksaw Ridge.
This true story of Desmond T. Doss a conscientious objector who still wanted to serve his country as a medic during World War II but refused to carry a gun is very good.
I started to view Doss as "Job" like especially when everyone was telling him even the love of his life Dorothy Schutte (Teresa Palmer) Just do this one thing and everything will be over with !!
I admired Doss's principles but i also wanted him to prove himself to his fellow soldiers and commanding officers,i wanted them to respect him.
The romance in the film works and there are good performances all around. It was great to see Vince Vaughn stretch his acting muscles
Hugo Weaving turns in a terrific performance as Doss's father Tom.He actually made me feel something for a person who wasnt a great human being and likely didnt win any father of the year awards
The battle scenes are intense, gory and harrowing,i could tell the audience i saw the film with was a bit overwhelmed by the violence.
The film is a bit cliched and predictable turns happen here and there an there were some odd quirks in Andrew Garfield's portrayal of Doss in the beginning of the film but fortunately that fades away.
Gibson gives the film a moving epilogue and has definitely presented one of the bright lights in film making in 2016
