ELLE
In the movie ELLE Isabelle Huppert is Michèle Leblanc a video game producer who is raped in her home. She doesnt call the authorities. For a period of time she doesnt even tell friends or family members. What follows is intriguing and then some.
At first i was taken aback by the casual it is what it is,and it was what it was mindset of the main character in the film, but then her layered past was slowly revealed and in life people that go through traumatic experiences do act out in uncommon ways.So i accepted the path she took.
The film is laced with dark humor coupled with a sharp and salty script. There is so much depth to the film it was highly entertaining I actually would love to see it again soon
Isabelle Huppert deserves an Oscar nomination for her raw, stoic and strong performance
Elle is definitely one of the most interesting and best movies of 2016
LIVE BY NIGHT
In Live By Night Ben Affleck is Joe Coughlin a war vet turned thief who makes the ultimate mistake of falling in love with the girlfriend of a mob kingpin Albert White, plus his father Thomas is a police captain.
He hooks up with another mob kingpin and enemy of Whites named Maso Pescatore and slowly comes into his own
Live By Night is good when it's good and bad when it's bad .
The pacing at times is incredibly slow and some characters are completely stiff. There are sparks of life throughout the movie though and there are great moments in the story especially the relationship and tug of war Joe has with a once heroin addicted young woman named Loretta Figgis(Elle Fanning) and is now a devout tent preacher who preaches over the ills Joe's casino will bring to the Tampa Florida area.
I wish the film had more moments like this.
So much is referred to and not seen leading me to think a lot of this movie was cut and it definitely could have given the film more depth
It's not a bad movie by any means but definitely lacks the power and interesting narrative of Affleck's previously directed films
Scale of 1-10 a 7½
