Expected this to end the way Marc Webb & Tom Flynn's The Gifted did, but pleasantly surprised all around

Red Sparrow

It's a decent spy thriller that starts off very intriguing and new, but ultimately falls into familiar territory. The movie isn't really flashy like a James Bond movie or something combooky like Salt, but it isn't a total bore like Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Jennifer Lawrence is essentially playing Black Widow in her origin movie only they don't hold back. They do a full rundown on how Sparrows are trained and manipulated through sex and seduction. Once they move into the main plot of the movie it does slow down a bit too long. The middle drags, but it picks back up in the last act. As for the acting, most did a good job although Jeremy Irons and Charlotte Rampling didn't even try to do a proper Russian accent. Overall, it's good spy thriller that leans more on the drama than the action.
7.5/10

Death Wish

Trying to put poor timing aside... I thought this was a somewhat decent remake Joe Carnahan tries to put together with his script. I really liked how it was structured and the social commentary from the radio shows kinda work. However, Eli Roth "Eli Roths" it and he tries to dumb it down as much as possible and add extreme gore whenever he sees an opportunity. It's a weird clash of direction. The first act was all sorts of cheesy. I never bought Bruce Willis as a surgeon once. And the incident was really toned down compared to the original. That being said, I enjoyed it for what it was and I could only wish what this movie could have been if Joe Carnahan directed it.
7/10

Annihilation - Still processing it, but it was fantastic. The last thirty minutes were basically an exercise in existential fear. - 8.5 / 10

BEDKNOBS & BROOMSTICKS (1971)
Quality = 7/10
Joy = 5/10

What a boring movie. I remember seeing bits of it when I was a child, I had no negative reaction to it back at the time.
Best thing I can say about this movie? It's nice to hear the normal voice of the Incredible Hulk's voice actor, the late Bob Holt (he voiced the animated Codfish). Stands as my favorite Hulk voice actor to date.

THE MUSKETEER (2001)
Quality = 5/10
Joy = 8/10

Imagine a villain asking for information about his enemy more than once, just to tell his last target what he knew as the things he wanted to know.
Story logic is mostly nonsense. Acting is fine most of the time, when it's not hammy. Sets and costumes look fine.

Here's a great bit of dialogue in midst of a riot taking place during a dinner party in the royal palace:
Musketeer: "Your highness, we are your guardians"
Bishop: "Then you need to be arrested"

There is also the bishop soldier who appears in the opening fight sequence who returns later just once, but looks like he will have a significant role after his introduction.

This one has the best choreographed sword fight on film, that climax battle with ladders is fantastic.

Score sounds inspired by the work of John Williams.

You got the wrong brain trusts Hamada. Chris McKeena is key.

Honestly haven't seen a more calculated blockbuster. The most perfect 1 in a mil high concept premise for especially a video game movie. It has the stereotypes, it utilizes said stereotypes to their fullest, it has the reasoning for any bit of bad/poor acting (they're supposed to be the same teenagers), it has the rationale for any wonky CGI, it has the platitudes, it has the power fantasy, it has the simplicity of plot, it has the levity...

The Double Lover.

Another good Ozon.

Red Sparrow.

Not the horror some critics are saying it is. Perfectly serviceable.

The Ritual

Pretty good.

Alien Covenant

I've had enough of the Alien movies. I find Fassbender's character more interesting than the aliens.

Detroit - 7/10

I get why this movie got lost in the shuffle. It's tense in areas with great acting and it has a message it's just too meandering. I get the message isn't a happy one, but the execution of it all just made me feel unfulfilled in that and I was left with nothing.

Valerian - 5/10

To quote Ridley Scott... "**** me."

You know it's bad when you have to read the wikipedia description while watching the movie to understand what the **** is going on.
