Tried to watch these in story order rather than release order to see how they played.
Underworld: Rise of The Lycans
7.5/10
Decent prequel that filled in the gaps of the flashbacks from the first film pretty well. The star-crossed romance was pretty compelling and I though the filmmakers did a good job showing how the war escalated. Bill Nighy is as usual a real standout in these films. Michael Sheen gets more to do and really delivers. I've become a fan of his work over the years. Rhona Mitra was a good choice for Viktors daughter Sonja. She had the right look and handled the physical stuff well enough.
Underworld
8/10
The film that kicked off the series. Takes more of a Blade route in substance and adds some Matrix flavor for style (trading green tint for blue) to break away from the "traditional" vampire and werewolf tales but brings a little something of its own thats new to the table as well.
I particularly liked the "hybrid" concept. Thats something I can't really remember seeing it movies like this up t that point. I enjoyed the twists and turns as the mysteries of the story unfolded. The action was entertaining
I always liked the films blend of modern and ancient in its look. Not sure if Kate Beckinsale has ever been sexier. I really like her in these films. The cast is full of good actors: Nighy, Sheen, Speedman, all fit their roles very well.
The use of different kinds of special effects techniques in this film always impressed me. There is some good practical work with the suits and make up and CGI is used when needed but I don't think its overused. It looks good.
Underworld: Evolution
8/10
Good continuation to the first film. Enjoyed how the filmmakers just picked up right where Underworld left off and just filled in more pieces of the puzzle. The make up and suit work got even better. Marcus is a really interesting character and the bond between he and his brother were a nice touch to give him an interesting motivation. Love the look of Marcus, the first vampire. More mysteries are revealed and solved as we learn more about Viktors manipulations. Its just cool how they expand this world.
Underworld: Awakening
7/10
This one had the difficult task of basically starting over with a new story. The previous trilogy had finally gotten through all the backstory and I felt one of the strengths of those films was how we went back and forth between the past and the present and how new bits of information were revealed.
This film doesn't have that. It has to start with a mostly new cast of players and take things in a different direction using the same basic foundation of vampires vs werewolves. The opening of the film is one of the strongest parts and it has an interesting story but this film felt more like a setup to what may come next. Maybe if the film had been longer it would have helped to flesh some things and new characters out.
Beckinsale looks as good as ever and seems more comfortable with the stunt work and action. I noticed that somehow the feel of this one was a little different. The color palette seems slightly more expanded and vibrant. The cold blue tint is still there but not as strong. Looks like there was a bit more reliance on CGI in this film but considering what they had to do its not surprising.
