What to Expect When You're Expecting

I thought I would check this out just because it's something I would never see or cared to see. It's exactly why I don't watch these types of films, it's all the same crap apparently. A bunch of different lame pregnant storylines that tries to be light hearted and funny wrapped into one film. And played by high profile celebs to sell the film. The oddest storyline was the one where they tried to play it serious and it doesn't mix well. Only upside to this was the group Chris Rock was with, they brought some entertainment into it.

Compliance

Another inspired by true events indie film that I can't believe actually happened. Without trying to spoil it, it's very light in story and it's not really compelling storywise. Dreama Walker plays the victim and she is stunning...helps a lot that there's a nude scene.

The Cold Light of Day

Aside from a couple of fun action sequences there is not much to TCLOD.
At first i thought it was going to be a cool my father is a bad ass C.I.A op
and im going to team up with him and we are going to bond by kicking bad guy's
all over the screen,but this doesnt happen and Bruce Willis vanishes from
the flick early on.Actually the film literally becomes a vanishing act with some horribly shot night sequences.I couldnt see a friggin thing during those scenes.
Sigourney Weaver sleepwalks throughout the film,collecting an easy paycheck,she
even looks bored when she starts shooting anyone that crosses her path.
There is a car chase that is kind of fun,but when it relentlessly goes on and on i began to laugh.
Scale of 1-10 a 3 wait for cable which should be in about 3 weeks.


THE WORDS

The Words works when it focuses on the frustrations and disappointments of longing to be a writer Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper) and his loving and supporting girlfriend, Dora (Zoe Saldana) but this is a story within a story within a story,which loses it's focus.
It's a well acted film and Jeremy Irons is the stand out as "the old man" who's manuscript Rory plagiarizes.
When the film turns to author Clayton Hammond (Dennis Quaid) and a Daniella(Olivia Wilde) a fan of his work and when her flirtation with him turns into a cross examination,
i kept asking where is this going? why does she keep questioning him? What's the point of this? Questions that lead to a semi ambiguous ending.

The Words is not a terrible film,but its definitely one that loses it's way.

The Master - 9/10

After waiting for four hours with my friends in the rush line and not even knowing if we would even get tickets, we got them, and my God, was the wait and price worth it. I need to see this again, but it's pretty much the same reaction to when I saw There Will Be Blood for the first time. This could be better, but I gotta see it again to finally decide.

This is how I look at it: PTA took what he did in There Will Be Blood and pushed it even further. All the bizarre moments in that film is pretty much most of this film cranked up to ten. And at the heart of this bizarre film is Joaquin Phoenix who gives without a doubt, the greatest performance of his career. I knew he was a great actor, but this amazing? You're watching him, but he completely dissolves into this character. To call him strange would be an understatement. This man is neurotic and screwed up beyond belief. He makes drinks with paint thinner in them for God sakes. I don't think I have ever followed a protagonist before that has made me more uncomfortable to watch. And it is difficult to imagine this man changing through what he goes through in this film. There is one scene in particular, which is the best and my favorite, where Phoenix doesn't let you breathe. And once it's over, you could feel the whole audience start breathing again. It's the best acting I've ever see from him. Which leads me to Philip Seymour Hoffman, who also gives an incredible performance. One of his best. Like Phoenix, you know you're watching him, but he just is that person. Not character, but person. These two deserve Oscars already. I really hope Phoenix wins, because this is the role of his career. You have seen him act and be great, but trust me when I say, you have never seen Phoenix like this before. He is on a whole new level. You and I thought Walk The Line really showed his talent, but here, you see a whole side of his talent in a way you never thought he had.

The movie's story also gives a great look on Scientology. It's not a criticism, it just an examination on how when a new religion emerges, it's met with hostility because of how new it is, so it is seen as insane. It's about being accepted from a society that has already accepted other religions. Adding Phoenix to the mix and at the center really brings about all those ideas into a new light. Even though you may not agree with them, there is at least a reasoning to it all. Most importantly, I understood why they were doing this.

Now this film may not be as warmly received as TWBB, but I do think it also deserves Directing, Writing, Art Direction, and Cinematography.

Now it kind of is drawn out a bit towards the middle, but I thought the same way about TWBB when I first saw it. This is not a movie you can only see once. Watching a PTA film is like watching something you've never seen before, so it requires a bit of digestion before you can really make a final opinion. But right now, I do know PTA did not disappoint us.

That's good to hear about Joaquin Phoenix, Jones. I always thought he was one of the best actors of his generation before he almost ruined his career with that stupid fake documentary. Looking forward to his comeback.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Secret of the Ooze
While style from the first film remains, the tone is shifted dramatically to be more kid friendly. This ruins what a great TMNT flick this could've been.

I recently saw Paranorman. WAY better than expected. Good story and hilarious to boot, definitely worth watching!
