I liked the movie. Didn't get lost either. I think alot of people expected the same kind of hero movie with a badguy and a goodguy. But the real "villain" in this movie was Peter's Vengence/Darkside.
and it didn't even do that very well, because there wasn't enough time, because Raimi tried to fit too much story into the movie. This "real" villain didn't even have a halfway descent origin for that matter.
Sandman was only there to bring out Peter's feelings of revenge, which he did.
Sandman was brought in for good special effects, and to have a sympathetic villain. Two decisions which were decided long before the symbiote or peter's dark side were even considered.
Eddie Brock/Venom was only there to be a personification of Peter's Darkness that he could confront, which he also did.
that's not true. He was there because fans wanted to see that awesome mouth full of teeth. The "real" villain as you called it, was only here because Venom was here. Not the other way around.
Now, don't get me wrong, I think that Venom was under-developed and could have easily survived this movie and have his true confrontation with Spider-Man in another sequal. But alas - unless they pull something really far from up their arse Venom is dead and gone (I saw the skeleton) but for what his role was in the grand scheme of the movies - he did his job.
I thought Topher did great as Venom. I thought the character development was there for Venom, and he was visually perfect, but Venom was in the wrong place at the wrong time. And I swear Venom was only onscreen for maybe two minutes at the most.
We had the formation, then while webslinging we couldn't actually see him. Then we had the conversation with Sandman for like 20 seconds. then it was time for the final battle, which was mostly Sandman, but we saw Venom for 30 seconds of it, and then the last minute where spider-man seperated them.
