Man, I really disliked Sam Rami's MJ. He did a lot of things well, but she wasn't one of them. No denying Kirsten was a popular name when Spider-Man was being made, but she never struck me as MJ. Add in the unremarkable writing of her coming off as a selfish wannabe actress or always being the damsel in distress for all three movies and the end result was a disappointment that didn't feel like MJ at all. There is more to the character than wanting to be an actress and calling Pete "Tiger."

Whoever they choose for MJ in the new trilogy will hopefully have chemistry with Andrew close to what he and Emma have. They made Kirsten and Toby look like awkward friends in comparison. As far as looks, both Gwen and MJ were hourglasses in the comics, but that's not Emma's figure and yet she's still gorgeous so MJ doesn't have to have that build either. She'll definitely need charisma to keep up with Emma's charm. If she can bring the feisty to Gwen's more grounded personality, then it's a good start.

I don't think Dunst is a terrible actress and again Spider-Man 1 was around a high point of her career popularity-wise, but the writing for her was just bland and uninspired throughout all three movies. ASM had it's share of chessy, but a high point was Andrew and Emma on-screen together. It just felt more genuine. So if the next MJ has the proper writing and acting chops for the role, then I think Webb can knock it out of the park with her as he did with Gwen. Of course, we want someone who looks the part. However, I'd look past not having the fantasized model figure for someone who can be a convincing Mary Jane Watson in personality.

was mj ever a natural ginger? i just always assumed she dyed her hair, since it was actually red, not orange.

Yep. I know many people say there are no such thing as natural redheads, that everyone is only ginger but that is very false. I mean Bryce Dallas Howard herself was a natural redhead. This is her natural hair color.

Marcia Cross, another famous redhead.

And then there's Christina Hendricks.

(Slightly more ginger but you get the point.) The point is that actual redheads do exist. And you don't need to make it a ginergery blonde in order to make it look realistic. KD's hair in SM1 looked fine to me, I have known looaads of girls with natural red hair of that color. (My cousin even being one.)

FYI, Christina Hendricks is a natural blonde. She's just been dying her hair since her early teens.

I'd be fine with copper. It's a nice middle-ground between strawberry blonde and deep auburn. An actual "red head" is a misnomer which has oddly been upheld with MJ's depictions over the years. I can see its wide appeal though.

Also, Julianne Moore:

Please don't try to tell me her hair comes from a bottle. Her hair is RED. Also, Alyson Hannigon and... Lindsay Lohan (puke). These are natural REDheads, not gingers.

Lol. Gotta love this discussion. I always imagined that MJ was one of those natural redheads/gingers who dyes her hair to really intensify, darken it, and bring out the color, which I believe Bryce Dallas Howard does based on all of the various shades of red that her hair has been over the years. A lot of women dye their hair, so no need to make it look 'natural'- especially when one considers that MJ works in the modeling and film industries. However, I do agree that red hair best suits a lighter complexion and light eyes. Too tan/olive complected (like actress Mila Kunis) and it doesn't work.

Didn't really care for the muted strawberry blonde look in SM2. Still think that the best shade of red for MJ was the color used in SM1. Strong, bold, vibrant (which fits the character's personality- at least in the comics), and looked great on the actress.

Well, if they find a Latina or WoC that could pull off MJ's character better than anyone else, then by all means. :yay:

Oh wait, I meant:

NO NO NO. Could you imagine them casting a Latina or WoC? If they gave her MJ's sassy, feisty, and vivacious personality, that would be a major trope!!!:

She's defined by her vivaciousness, humor and joie de vivre, and can make a good counterpoint to the more grim or snarky members of the cast.

Latin women in media (particularly American media) are usually portrayed as sultry temptresses with fierce tempers. When they aren't masculine, a Spicy Latina will usually be a great beauty and highly sought after...

lol @ you arguing with yourself.

Rejoinders like that only work when they're true. Sorry! Bet hey, you tried!

Last I checked, I wasn't inventing strawmen, arguing against them-and then trying to pat myself on the back... Something you very clearly did in your last post. Well done.

^ lol. I think you missed the point. Oh well. Next time.

You attempted to mirror my own satirical posts in an effort to prove your point...when really, all you did was create an imaginary argument against yourself. I'm clearly not the one missing the point here.

Lol. Vid. I wasn't trying to prove anything. Relax. I was just teasing you since I saw that you had posted some stuff about tropes and Max Dillon in the Jamie Foxx thread (hence the tropes pulled literally from the same exact website).

Take your average attractive actor or actress and stick on Nerd Glasses, a lab coat and some mussed hair and clothes to make them Hollywood Homely. They are probably also Hollywood Dateless, and the social ineptitude may only be an Informed Flaw.

The Hollywood Nerd will have an interest in some 'geeky' subject such as comic books, science fiction, or baseball, helping identify them as a loser, especially if they still live in their parent's basement.

Jaime Foxx's Electro

I thought it was amusing. Moving on...I honestly wouldn't mind if they changed the ethnicity of the character as long as the writing and direction is there. I think that general consensus is that Dunst looked great in SM1. Doesn't change the fact most believe that Raimi's attempt not only failed to capture the spirit of the character from the comics, but was just a poorly executed character in general.

^ Margot could definitely make for a good Sue Storm, but I think she'd make for an even better Mary Jane. Unfortunately, I'm sure she'd never want to do both.

Nah, she wouldn't want to do both. But hopefully she will take one. Preferably Mary Jane, because a lot of the other good choices are either preoccupied with something else or are innapropriate for the role.

Regarding hair, MJ should have looked like this, for all 3 movies:

I mean... what happned? Nevermind, they have this series to do things right. :cwink:

Yeah, a lot of actresses that I think would be good choices for the character are either too old, or have been eaten up by other superhero/action franchises, which may happen to Margot as well. :csad:

As I said before, she can be good for Sue, but I just think that there are only a few actresses capable of making a killer MJ, and imo she's one of them. With Sue I think that there are more options. (Besides, I don't really have very high expectations for that reboot.) Btw, another manip:

Cool manip. Those kids...

it makes me sad that it seems we won't be getting "the gang" in these movies. i'd love to see the five of them just hanging out and being friends.

Yep. That was a major part of the comics that was missing in Raimi's movies which I hoped would happen in Webb's series.

I hope peter had established some friendship, outside of harry and gwen circle. A cool, smart and funny kid like peter tends to be more sociable. In Raimi's version his a complete social cripple outcast, made him very boring outside his Spider-man routine.
