Transformers Why all the hate?

Exactly. Transformers is more than just G1. Some people just don't get that.

Granted, the film did take a lot of inspiration from G1, but there were still concepts in it that could be traced back to the other forms the franchise has taken.

My problem with them had nothing to do with their races...but with their stereotypical portrayals . For example, someone telling the Latin soldier to speak English, Tyrese/Sgt. Epps expressing Ebonic colloquialisms to Scorponok in the desert battle. "Bring it." Another example is the supposedly intelligent Glen Whitman -Anthony Anderson's character looking and sounding obsequious and ignorant as well as cowardly.

You know I hate to say it [being half black and half hispanic] but there's a reason those stereotype's exsist. There's a large portion of both ethnic groups that behave in those fashions.I myself have been told to speek english from others and bring from east NY Brooklyn I have heard many other words like "bring it" or "come on" just before a fight.I wouldnt consider ether to be a negitive sterotyping.....its just a reflection of how it really is.Lets face it they were grunt soldiers......their the common man not the highly intelligent pencil pushing type of character.

And almost all of Anthony Anderson's character's come off the same way.......thats his fault for not being that versatile an actor.but his is funny on the otherhand:woot:

Well many of those same concepts from the other series have been since retoractively been added to the G1 mythos long before this movie.I just wish they would have used some non-G1 names for some of the movies characters. That way there would be a clear cut inclusion from the other shows.

Nonsequitar. I am fullly aware of that. I do get it. But do you get it? The producers (particularly Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto) lied when they said it would be an adaptation of G1...it was in truth a devastation of that classic animated series and comic book continuity.

All three Spider-Man films were outstanding adaptations, including the utilizations of aspects from the Ultimate comics universe as well as the nineties animated series.

Transformers on the other hand, was a miserable, poorly executed version of the source material. And even laying aside the argument of not being like Generation 1 or any other version of Transformers, Michael Bay's Transformers was a horrible reimagining. If I was never a fan of Transformers, I would probably give this film 1 1/2 stars. :)

I have a little more than a familiar passing knowledge of some of the other Transformers continuties such as G2 (comics) and Beast Wars (animated series). When you analyze Bay's Transformers, it falls apart quicker then a skyscraper made of paper mache. The storyline, like its unfaithful designs, was a melting pile of scrap.

Hmmm...I guess we'll have to disagree on that. However, what I've striving to convey is that there is tremendous disbalance presented in the film. Two of the prominent African-American characters sound and look moronic. Whitman's cousin crashing through the door glass was another example of the racial stereotypes presented in the film.

Jazz, who was one of the "black" Transformers (as most fans know) had a lot of class and dignity, but in this film, the director, writers, and producers all share responsibility in making him into more of a low-down gangster-type rather than a cool yet component lieutenant like the original series. Bobby Bolivia, the character played by Bernie Mac was very disrespectful to his grandmother and seemed like a stage clown pulled out of the film Birth of a Nation.

I think the Spider-Man movies are crap. But, we're all different and that's cool. I don't even know why I care so much.

.

As good as these films were and I enjoyed them very much they werent really perfect adaptations.........in particular MJ's character bore no resemblance to her comic book counterpart in ether appearence of characterization.Witch I've been saying since the first film.

No offense, but I think you take things a little too seriously. The cousin crashing through the window is a racial stereotype? What are you talking about?

Oh and Jazz was awesome.

I don't remember them ever being in the cartoon. If they were in the comics, I never read them.

Dude almost a quarter of the first 3 years of the toyline never made it to the G1 toon. For exsample did you know that their were 7 members of the Insecticons. And you cant forget all the toys released after the show was canceled in 1987.The G1 toyline continued till about 1991.

But just to let you know both Barricade and Blackout were Decepticon Micro Masters. Here take a look.

I really dont remember if these 2 made any apperance in the Marvel comic but other Micro Masters did.
And both these guys did end up in the Micro Master comic from Dreamwave.

Blackout was a minor character from the 1990 toyline of Generation 1. Later on, he was a mini-con in Transformers: Armada and later on still, a character in Transformers: Energon. He was a helicopter in Transformers: Energon which is where I'm sure the filmmakers were inspired in terms of the character name.

Barricade was from the Generation 1 1990 toyline. He originally was part of the Decepticon race track patrol team. Later on, in the Transformers: Energon toyline, Barricade was reimagined as a missile truck and leader of the Decepticon subgroup that formed the body of the combiner robot Bruticus Maximus.

With most of that I agree but its funny you bring up the "Black Transformer" issue.I've been following a debate on that topic at an other fansite with clam's that he was or wasnt black.

I didn't know any of that. I only watched the cartoons. That's it.

Your forgetting that Bay his self has stated that he told the writters to find only G1 names that could still be used under copyright for all the TF's in his film.Saying that they may have took inspiration from the Energon show fly's in the face of early drafts of the script that had the character called both Vortex and Soundwave.I'm sure that they had no intention of making any connection between the two different Blackout characters.....but when they decided to not use the names Soundwave and Vortex they were told to find an other G1 name.

Exactly. Transformers is more than just G1. Some people just don't get that.

Micheal Bay made it no secret he was never huge Transformers fan, so I was never really expecting a faithful G1 adaption, and personally I was fine with that, given my own modest expectations, if the movie turned out to be mediocre with some great action setpieces, I probably would have gone up to Mr. Bay, shook his hand and congratulated him.

As a huge Transformers fan I could have been pretty forgiving, but for me personally, this movie just failed to even meet my lowest expectations.

The movie is filled with nonsensical or useless plotpoints.

The human characters were a case study in bad b-movie cliches (evil-jock-boyfriend, dirty-harry-wannabe-cop, oblivious parents, jerk-government-agents, ect), only same Sam and Mikaela are portrayed as slightly two dimensional characters, but even they have their problems.

The Autobots and Decepticons don't fare much better, especially the Decepticons. I find it sad that most of the Decepticons were defeated by humans. Frenzy and Blackout are killed by humans, Devastator is taken out by Mikaela and an injured Bumblebee, poor Scorponok is scared so badly he's never heard from again, and who knows what happened to Barricade, probably ran out energy chasing Sam on foot. But the greatest insult was having Sam deliver the final blow to Megatron, the indignity of it all.

And last but not least were the over produced action scenes that seem to over use every cheap visual trick in the book, fast edits, shaky cam, extreme close ups, and slo-mo. I'm just not fan of this style action, eespecially when done to such excess.

He was the only Autobot to die, of course he was black.:yay:
