Origin story from Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos (1963), issue 27fromFebruary 1966 tells how Sgt. Fury was on a mission in Germany with his Howling Commands and was in a fight with his team. During the fight a grenade was thrown at him by a German. He caught it and threw it back at the enemy, but it exploded and took out his eye. While in the infirmary back on base the doctors could have saved his eye but it would have kept him away from action for a year during the recovery. Instead he opted for losing the eye and only being out of action for a few days, this way he can continue fighting the good battle with his team for his country.
