I can't comment on the underlying politics between the writers of DC and Marvel, but there sure seems to be some. In the 70s, Hulk was on a rampage and couldn't even knock Superman off his feet??? C'mon writers, even though our heros push the envelope when it comes to the various laws of our physical universe, they're still bound by them. That same decade, Superman fought Captain Marvel for hours before finally knocking him out. And that was after Captain Marvel knocked the man of steel around like a little girl a few times. You're telling me a being like the Hulk with potentially no limits to his strength can't knock Superman down? I won't even comment about Thor and Superman in JLA/Avengers crossover other than, "Ridiculous!!!". I mean, Thor has beaten Hercules, a marvel character, a few times. Doesn't Captain Marvel's strength come from Hercules??? Wouldn't that make Superman and Thor of about equal strength? So, is the man of steel always gratuitously victorious because Marvel charcters seem to be so much more popular? Somebody help me figure this one out???

Its simple. Superman was the first. Marvel owes its entire existance to him. He more than a charcater hes a part of the modern American mythos.

No. Quite the opposite. He wins because he is generally more popular. Also, because he is the face of DC whereas neither Hulk nor Thor can claim that about Marvel.

As for the Captain Marvel comparison, He has the strength of Hercules, but a hell of a lot more besides that.

yep.

although, in a legit fight, i'd like to think hulk, thor, the surfer and even dr. strange could all give supes a run for his money, if not defeat him.

What do you mean "even Dr. Strange"? Strange would trounce Superman in less time than it'd take the other three to make their first move.

oh, i agree, but i figured there'd be a lot of people that would argue. strange lacks the biceps that superman has, and in the eyes of a lot of these fanboys, that's all that matters.

just trying to avoid that in here for today.

Let the fanboys come. We will smite them handily. Such is the ASSHAT way.

I understand your fear. It comes from reading that damn Hulk thread.

it is until BrianWilly comes out of his room, and screams and throws fits...
That went over my head. I hate having to withdraw from the Hype for a while. I miss out on all the new rivalries that have emerged. :(

go read the last 3 or so pages of the latest bought/thought thread.

and if you disagree with me, please for the love of God and all that is decent, just keep it to yourself.

Not to split hairs, but actually The Phantom was the first comic superhero to wear tights to my knowledge, unless you count Popeye lol. Then Detective comics was next, but was produced by Malcom Wheeler, and his publisher Donenfeld, who bought out Wheeler's comics to become DC. So I guess Superman was the 2nd or 3rd superhero. I mean I've heard of other guys with powers before that on the net, but not ones who wore tights.

As to why Superman always wins, everyone nailed it pretty much. He's the face of DC and probably the best known comic hero ever. His books might not be in the top 10 every month, but it would be hard to find a comic character that ppl knew the name of better.

A guy like Silver Surfer should beat Superman everytime, but if they ever met chances are the editors between the companies would have an argument, and reach the conclusion that Superman doesn't lose hero fights and is better known. Plus Superman is just built to be overpowered. When stopping locomotives isn't enough he moves up to buildings, then planets, and so on. He's been written to be way over the top and always reach a new level. A guy like Thor, while once Marvel's answer to Superman, is a bit more grounded. He's very tough, but not above getting a bloody nose, or recieving a loss to another hero like Hulk.

There's something ironic about the fact that a character who's a bona fide god is "more grounded" than Superman.

Do not mock the great David Blaine! One day, Blainetology will grow to be the dominate religion on the planet. Then, all will tremble before his righteous might! :cmad:

right. but until then...dr. strange.

Which is funny when I wrote that I didn't really think about it being odd, but reading you say that hit me. A man (alien) is higher up on the omnipotent uber power scale than a Norse God from mythology.

Which is always a tradeoff. There's a part of me that thinks when Superman really lets loose and kicks ass that it's an awesome moment, then there are times where it's by far the biggest turn off to me on reading his books. Obviously the writers agree as they have to power him down every few decades, and then proceed to immediately power him up again.

Actually, it's a little known fact that Stan Lee got the idea for Dr. Strange from a dream he had. In his slumber, he dreamt of a powerful mage with abilities to bend the laws of the cosmos to his indomitable will, and look dead sexy while doing it.
The man in his dream was none other than David Blaine.

i'll be damned.

i take it back, then.

And you can guarantee I'll probably join in as well. It'll be an awesome time.

Unfortunate, but true.

I forgot to welcome you back. o_O I missed you. :csad:

I'm kind of curious just how ungodly strong the gods or whatever of Krypton would be.

Because he is Superman.

also because of what mwm1331 said.
