Why the Hate for this Movie?

I said why I hate this movie but there are still loyalist.....I will break them all...

I'll tell you why I "dislike" this movie, it's not hate yet cuz I haven't actually seen it. Its more I really, really, really don't like it. But I digress, this is why I dislike "Dragonball"

So far it just doesn't seem good enough. Sorry, guys. It just doesn't. Being a comic book and movie fan in general over the years i've seen more "Adaptions" than I can remember. Adaptions of the upmost quality I might add.

For example, LotR which isn't a comic, but a series of books so it has no pictures was carried over to film brilliantly, same for Harry Potter, most recently I've seen Iron Man and Batman done amazingly on screen.

My BIGGEST gripe with this DB movie...is that they aren't doing anything worth my time. How can I pay for mediocrity after seeing things like Iron Man and The Dark Knight? I know what a good story is and furthermore I know what a good adaption is. Given the massive amounts of information we have on this movie it's just not shaping up that way. The actors don't particularly fill me with joy and the cinematic dragon world they've created looks rather mundane.

Oh and something else, Batman and Iron Man have thousands if not millions of stories and interpretations, so it can be tricky narrowing down what stories you want to condense into a two hour script and should be turned into a movie. DRAGONBALL on the other hand is a manga/anime...the story is quite straight forward! There aren't hundreds of origins and reinterpretations of The King Piccolo Saga or The Saiyan Saga. They happen one way and we all know how it goes. I've said it time and time again, especially where the X-movies are concerned "Fancy powers and costumes do not a character make" here's looking at you Halle/Storm-in-name-only.

LotR had tons of characters! And Batman even had Lucius Fox! Are you telling me you can't find room for supporting characters like Krillin and Tien?
Krillin should've already been at Master Roshi's when Goku arrives kicking off their rivalry and Tien could've been a contestant at the worlds martial arts tournament who has a bone to pick with the Roshi boys because of his master crane hermit. I mean, Iron Man found room for Rhodey, Shield, and Nick Fury! I mean, its just so easy to do these things it actually hurts my feelings when they give me an Albino piccolo and expect me to fade quietly into the night and give them my money regardless....well "F" that, Im done, I'm no longer making excuses or supporting something that I already know is inferior to what it could have been.

That's how we end up with SHALLOW crap like Fantastic Four, coincidentally...also made by Fox. Small world, huh? I use the word SHALLOW cause that's what it is. FF has no heart, its just showy SFX, some action, and comedic relief. FF should have been what Spider-Man 1 was...instead its a shallow popcorn flick. Soon forgotten and swept under the rug of time.

I wanted DB to be the new LotR so that it could stand the test of time, not the new F4 so that it could be forgotten, New Line or Sony should've made this film.

I wouldn't have minded if they made DB as long as the pirates of the Caribbean movies in order to fit in Krillin, Tien, and some of the more "Dragonball" aspects of Toriyama's world. I can sit an extra 45 minutes for quality story telling. This film just has shallow written all over it.

All these pedantic elitist fanboys are starting to annoy with their demands for a word for word, frame for frame adaption. I hope the teaser quiets a few of them down because if i have to put up with another seven months of rock arguements and people whining about how cheap the gaint expensive set looks I swear i`m gonna fillet myself with a potato pealer.

They go on adventures in db. everytime they go looking for the dragon balls it's an adventure. and it can be argued that LotR is just about getting rid of unwanted jewelry, but that doesn't make it any less great. I mean, sure characters start to do the same thing after a while, but how many times has superman rescued miss lane from danger, and spiderman rescued mj? My point is any, and EVERY ongoing action series starts to get repetitive after a while. Even the 1's we love the best. (like indy jones) so u shouldn't single out db. not when it has so much in comon w/ so many other series.

vegeta has a backstory. piccolo/kami has a backstory. trunks has a backstory. buu has a backstory. goku has a back story. even cell, freeza and babidi have info of what they're pasts where like. plus the shows long enough to where half of the people don't need back stories because its all explained on the course of the show. but my point is every movie that has it's own section on these boards is as action oriented and entertainment driven as db. and that db may not be as complicated as other stories, but it sure not that simple either. look at piccolos story. he's made of pure evil, and he still turns to the good and becomes an ally to his most hated enemy.

people keep saying that the film is the most unfaithful adaption ever but that flies in the face of the fact that all the characters are in it (except for krillin and tien), the characters seem to have the personalities they should, the events of the saga are all present and the crew is full of talented professionals: the director is quite good, the producer is great, the fight team worked on 300 and the screenwriter wrote the big hit. one of my favorite action comedies. I mean they even included mai and master mutaito two charatcers who a lot of casual fans wouldn`t even know of. THAT is what is left to like about this film. Countered.

Oh how I love the title of fanboy. It's true that I have a lot of respect and admiration for Dragonball, but more so I also love movies in general. (I'm a film student) But all that's beside the point, I never asked for a word for word or a frame for frame adaption, nevertheless there are certain irrefutable aspects of Dragonball which I don't see represented in this film.

To someone like you Dragonball is all about cool fighting and junk, but it's more than that and likewise a film based on it should be as well. By only including the bare minimum of characters and altering them significantly you lose most of its heart. Example? Doctor Doom from F4...Fox and Tim story would have us believe that "Hey! This is doom!" when it really wasnt.

I look at this movie and see that they're doing to Goku and company what F4 did to Doom. Goku in school period significantly changes the character and Doom not traveling the world and upping his game in science and magic are a part of his character. When you alter significant events like those you fundamentally alter a character. Like calling Doom Vic throughout the whole film, I guess they'll call Goku "G-man" or something next...

But I digress, you people toss the word fanboy around like its a dirty word. Fanboy this, fanboy that...bottom line, fanboys = quality control specialists. If the people who know this stuff backwards and forwards don't speak up and voice their opinions about what they feel is being done wrong, then guess what? Studios will just F-up more of your childhood memories to make a quick buck. You don't really care how DB turns out in the end at least not as much as those you call "Fanboys" thus you're content to point the finger self righteously. Wait until Fox gets its hands on something you truly care about then we'll see who the fanboy is...

What the hell makes Dragonball different from Superman, Batman, or Iron Man? If we made Superman crash land in Detroit and be raised by Gangsters people would be upset. IF Batman was an average Joe who family own a convenient store chain called Wayne-Mart We'd be upset. If Iron Man was a Junkyard owner who built his armor out of spare Chrysler parts we'd be upset. So how come Goku, Tien, and Krillin are expendable? Cuz Japanese manga don't matter as much as American comics so who cares if we omit important supporting characters and alter origins making them mundane to the point of mediocrity.

I mean, who cares right? I CARE!

I know right. How many characters did Pirates of the Caribbean have again? For that matter how much money did that flick make? God forbid we think outside the box with an original story...I mean, adding characters that are ACTUALLY well known for being it it...WHAT A PREPOSTEROUS IDEA! How could it ever work?!

You can still be a fanboy of a production. Hell with TDK there were fanboys of just TDK before the movie even came out. There are a type of fanboys that love a movie way before they see it. Following everything about the movie and defending it even when it looks grim.

When i say it cant be compared to Speed Racer its not defending it since 1 is about fast cars and the other is about fighting aliens.

Theres always people that will complain on these type of sites. Then get proven wrong.
