Why the Hate for this Movie?

Dragonball was all about the characters in my opinion, thats what i loved about it, you actually cared about the characters, and to me this will be the clincher if they get the vibe of the personalities right.

The special fx could be the best in the world but if the feel of the characters ain't right then it ain't gonna work.

The film has already lost most of the DB and DBZ characters appeal already. I couldn't care less what happens to any of them to be honest.

why didn't they just call goku-gohan and chichi-videl....that would have fit way better and would have pleased all the fans

DBZ is more popular because the action is better....not necessarily because the comedic aspects were toned down. regardless, this is Dragon Ball that they should have been making, not DBZ.
I like the fights in dragonball the best. If only because you can actually SEE the fight. ****'s too fast in Z past the Ginyu fights.

The fights in Dragonball were definitely one of the best. Everything was more traditional Kung Fu. Later it's all teleports, energy beams and 100 kicks & punches in a second.

untrue. best fight scene i've ever seen in the series is in dbz, super saiyan 2 goku against kidd buu after winning rock, paper, scissors against vegeta.

My main beef with this film is on par with most which is the hiring of non-martial artists since I primarily and going to see it for the martial arts. Its not unheard of non-martial artists doing martial arts, its just a question of if their nimble/athletic enough, I mean Michelle Yeoh was a professional dancer before she did Martial Arts Flicks so who knows... Here's hoping for the best, at least they got Chow Yun Fat :)

Hmm.. I don't remember that one too well. I liked the Piccolo Vs Imperfect Cell fight. I only remember the fights I've seen recently. I watched Dragonball and up to the Cell games recently. I'll get back to you on the buu fights.

Cell vs. SSJ2 Gohan was the best fight when I was a kid but that might of been the bad ass build up to it and the awesome Father-Son Kamemeha*SP.

I still like the energy battles in Z. I just like the fighting the tournaments of DB too. The build up to SSJ2 was crazy when I was a kid as well.

I think one of the most real concerns is the fighting and how well its done. Its been a while since I've seen the One but at least Wong has some experience with Martial Arts and experience goes a long way in seeing strengths and weaknesses in a product.

But Dragon Ball and DBZ are the same series, it just became more action heavy as the story progressed. Every comic series evolves and changes over the years. When they made the first X-men movie they didn't have to use the tone or characters from the 60's. Rather try to make something that represents the series as a whole.

Besides the Goku vs.Piccolo jr. fight is alot like the fights we see later in the series. It seems like this movie is meant to set up for the "Z" stories and would have that feel also. I guess they could of made 3 Piccolo movies but I don't think they're going to do that.

DB and DBZ are two different series done by the same animation company, but based on the same manga. Kind of like TMNT, TMNT- Fast Foward, and TMNT Back to the Sewers, there all the same continuity but they are three different shows.

the manga is titled Dragon Ball from start to finish. The anime uses the exact same images from the manga. The "Z" refers to anime only, just notes a turning point in the series as it is Goku's final adventures.

So I would say it's different from TMNT. Dragon Ball GT is a different series though.

I see your point, but TMNT is one continuous story as well.

The fact is that Dragonball and Dragonball Z both feature different character designs as well as tone, its marked difference in the series even if based on the same manga. That they are for all intents and purposes two different shows but both fitting into a larger story.

I see it as a very long running anime series, and a decision was made to split the series at an appropriate spot to help marketing the series and products.

For example you might have heard this "Dragon Ball" series has awesome fighting, if you were interested in it the logical thing would be to start from the beginning...and then like 30 episodes in you're like "umm where's the fighting?"

But I think when making an adaption you should always look to the source and the manga is "Dragon Ball" from Goku's first appearance to the end of the majin buu fight. The anime is pretty much just the manga colored in, some people might call this method "very faithful" and others might call it "lazy".

So thats why I think it's alittle silly when a poster gets yelled at, "that's not DB! thats DBZ!", because those events happened exactly the same way in the DB manga. So like I said I think the movie should represent the series as a whole rather than just an era. I don't think the sequel should be called "Dragon Ball Z".

There is so many things false with those last few words. Let's see, through the eyes of a fan boy:

-ZOMG Gohan dont fite Picolo he wuz frends wit him.
-GOHAN DOESNT WER HIS GI UNTIL HE FITES MAJIN BUU
-Videl iz werin white but no pink OMG ITS SO UNFAITHFUL
-WHERE IS GOKU AND GOTEN FAIL
-They replaced completely unnessacry caracters wit new unessacary caracters! UNFAITFUL LOAD OF CRAP
-WHY DOES PICCOLO CHANGE HAVXMAZ<YJFDWZJMAZJJDZA
-YAMCHA AND BULMA DINT MEET GOHAN WHEN HE WAS A TEEN THEY MET GOKU NOOOOOO

And many more "unfaithful" inaccuracies.

That fight is kind of terrible.

Cell v. Goku and Vegeta v. Goku I are easily the best battles of DBZ.

The problem with DBZ battles is it is less about technique, skill, and training, and more about getting beat up till you are strong enough to beat your opponent. I don't need half and episode devoted to someone powering up or shooting a beam or standing around invincible.

DB is where it is at for the combat.

They should have saved the high school scene for a sequel with gohan in it
