Civil War Winter is Coming - The Bucky Barnes Thread

Bucky is a beast in this film, and he's definitely one of the main characters.

Bucky, for the second straight film, is barely a character. He's a plot device. And Sebastian Stan just isn't selling it very well. He was just kind of lifeless through most of the movie, aside from his action sequences. Really disappointed in the "evolution" of Bucky's character here though. I just feel like Cap/Bucky deserved more than a retread and a brief reminder that they used to have fun together. Their relationship was handled much, much better in TWS. Here it's barely a thing, but Steve's actions revolve around it in part.

Bucky was GREAT in this. I thought he was much, much better portrayed in CW than in TWS, where he was basically just a cool terminator.

His plot is central to the movie, he actually has personality in this, he seemed like a real character rather than a robot. I loved his relationship with Cap, and I loved the way their friendship was established not just by their dialogue, but also through the action. And is it just me or is he portrayed as even more badass in CW? I do not remember him being THAT enhanced. That action sequence in the first third felt like a Winter Soldier showcase!

@IMSebastianStan:
Well here's a ******* #tbt So...back in the #wintersoldier film 2013, one day on set, as I was changing, I found that helmet in a bag. And it stared at me. I grabbed it and immediately after I took this picture, I sent it to Kevin Feige. Little did I know, that a few years later I would face the man. Let's go. #civilwar this weekend. See what this picture became. P.s. This is what the Russos referred to back in the collider interview. #wintersoldier
(edit: does anyone know exactly which collider interview he's referring to?)

Howard Starks last words, "Sgt. Barnes?"...

I completely forgot that they knew each other. :(

Bucky was fantastic in this. He actually had more to do than I thought he would, with more lines as well. Heck he probably had more to say than BvS Superman.

Some website actually counts that Spider-man in civil war got more lines than superman in BvS. That says a lot.

I liked Bucky/WS more in this than TWS. I loved the scenes he had with Steve.

I could do with more scenes of steve and buck just reminiscing the good old days!

Bucky was great in this movie. You can really feel the bond between him and Rogers.

I went to see the movie again today for the fourth time. This is my thought.

Bucky barnes is a good man, captured by hydra and unwillingly turned into Winter soldier, a killing machine.

When he was finally free from the shackle of hydra after SHEILD collapsed, he doesn't get the peace he craved. Instead, he was hunted by various parties, all wanting to wreck vengeance on him.

He is a tortured soul. He understands the circumstances but it doesn't makes him feel less responsible. He carried alot of guilt in him. The worse thing is he is helpless about it.

By willingly puting himself under cyrostasis again, he has put everyone before himself. He is selfless, he is a hero to me!

Totally agree with this. Had some major feels for Bucky in this. And showed he does have a conscience when he requested being put in sleep mode again.

Absolutely loved loved loved loved loved (did I say loved?) Bucky in this. Sebastian absolutely positively knocked it out of the park. Can't wait to watch it again :)

I also totally hope that...

While in stasis in Wakanda they give him a vibranium arm. I mean, come on, when he comes out eventually he's going to need an arm replacement :)

Yeah, Sebastian Stan did a great job. I'd put him as a highlight except for the fact that there are so many other characters who were great too. The fight choreography with him was great as well. I bought him as a credible threat among the best.

You know... I actually agree with those that say there was not much to Bucky in this, heck in the MCU in general. Sure, the Falcon and Bucky stuff was fun and funny... But it wasn't exactly deep nor were his interactions with Steve. This was a packed film but like in TFA and TWS I still don't really feel much when it comes to the Bucky and Cap relationship outside of a competent perfunctory nature to it all. The action they have Stan and the character do is tops though.

Thought the scene where the other Super soldiers were beating on Bucky was hard to watch. And then Bucky getting his handler out the of cage area. It shows what a pawn poor Bucky has been all these years. I know he killed people as the WS but for goodness sake this dude needs some MCU LOVE! At this point he is the most tragic character. And then when tells Steve he needs to go into cryo until his head is fixed.....come on Stark! This guy is as selfless as Cap in his own way. Understood Starks reactions in the film but I also hope the Avengers can come together as family once more and extend it to Bucky.

There seems to be lot of hate on bucky/ws in this forum, not sure why.

However its good to know someome feels the same way I feel towards the character. Both steve & buck are tragic souls!

Because he's not been portrayed well. His character is limited, the performance is limited, and his arc is minimal at best.

The more I think about it, the more disappointed I am with Bucky in this franchise, not just this film.

They've just done almost nothing with his redemption arc. He's been the same cold, distant superkiller through two films. Granted, in this film he's not so much a straight up assassin, but he's also not winning any good guy points.

The big redeeming moment in Bucky's arc came from Cap's character in TWS (the friend speech), but here...they just don't do much of anything with the character. And the resolution? Eh.

Dude's the biggest victim in all of this imo. Was like a brother to Steve when he was at his weakest, went over to fight for freedom and his country, only for all this to happen to him. Being made to do things he wouldn't even have come close to doing before, against his will. I know that fact that he did what he did to an old alley and almost did it to Cap too kills him. He's just an easy guy for me to sympathize with.

I felt more emotion between him and Steve in TWS, and I was disappointed on Civil War because I hoped/expected it to build and expand on that.

Especially how much Chris Evans Sebastian Stan, and the Russos all talked up the Steve/Bucky friendship.

WS was probably the best part of the movie. Everything centered around him.

Yes Bucky is a victim but let's be honest he still killed so many people over the years most notably Tony's parents Howard Stark and Maria Stark...Bucky killed them and he should have had to answer for that
