Would the movie have been better without Venom?

Way too much going on, so we never got to see the villains show off their true powers. I wanted to see more shapeshifting ass-kicking action with Sandman, and more intense hand-to-hand combat with Venom. They needed to get rid of either Sandman or Venom. Too many plotlines ruined this one.

I honestly think we could have done without Sandman. Or, if Venom had been excluded, hopefully we could have done without the fact that Sandman was Ben's killer.

If Venom or Sandman had been cut out, this movie would have been a lot better.

In fact, even if the BOTH of them had been cut from this movie, it would have been better. Harry/New Goblin was so fantastic in this movie that he could have carried it all by himself. I'm serious.

I think all the villains got a fair amount of screen time. However, if one had to go, I'd say venom because he had the latter and least amount of input. They could have extended Harry or sandman's character to fill out.

I agree! I hate when my post gets left on the last page. So here it is again:

Alight, first off I have to say I did not HATE this film (down with the haters!), but I didn't love it that way I did the first two either.

I was going to create a theard called "How this movie could have been better" until I saw this one. IMO the movie would have been better without Venom!

I felt that there were too many villains. I remember reading a rumor about the first script. It said that Sandman was the main villain and Harry was a side villain. There was no Venom. Sam Raimi was pretty much brow beaten into putting the character in Spidey 3. This seems to make sense with everthing else we've heard about him not like the charcter.

Now don't get me wrong, I love Venom! But I think Peter should have stayed in the black suit for the whole movie. There was not enough time to esablish that suit. It turned him evil way too quick, I think it took a year or two in the comics.

So this is how I would fix movie:

1. Peter gets the symbiote just like he did in the film, but he keeps it thought the hole movie.

2. No Venom this time around. Save it for Spidey 4.

3. Maybe we could have seen just a taste of the evil side of the suit.

I think this would have fixed just about every problem with the film:

1. It would not have felt over crowded or rushed.

2. We could have had more time to explain Sandman's powers.

3. More screen for Sandman and the New Goblin.

4. No long drawn out song and dance number with Peter (god that sucked).

5. Most importantly the end would have been different. Harry is bad until the end! He still dies, but Sandman saves Peter from Harry and fixes the mistake he made so many years ago. Peter forgive Sandman. End.

I don't blame Raimi. I think the same people are to blame as always.

If Tobey and Topher were signed on for the 4th I'd be all for Spidey having the symbiote this movie and Venom in the 4th. It would be too weird having a different Peter/Eddie from the 3rd to the 4th if both dealt with the symbiote. I don't know how the would end the film though maybe with Eddie sadistically looking on at Peter in the shadows or something. It would be kind of cool seeing Captain Stacy die in the fourth and Gwen blaming Spider-Man for the death even though it happened at the hands of Venom.

I liked the movie albeit the pacing seemed off which I think had to do with edited out a few back-story scenes. I wouldn't have minded a longer movie with a few more character-establishing scenes but I know a lot of people don't like going to 3 hour movies.

GOOD IDEA!

First off, I enjoyed Spider-Man 3. That said...

Venom, to me, felt a bit forced. Had they stuck with Sandman as the main villain I think it would've been much better. Although I'll admit I'm not a big Venom fan, I think he should've been saved for a later movie where more focus could be placed on him as a main villain.

I agree!

I'm begining to wonder if this movie would have been better without Venom. The movie had too many villains and since raimi didn't like Venom, maybe he should have been the one to get cut out. How do people expect Raimi to do a good job with Venom if Raimi doesn't like him. Do you think you could do a good job with writing stories about characters you didn't like?

I liked this movie very much, I think it was the greatest of the Spidey movies, but yes, this movie would have been better if Venom wasn't in it. I wanted more Sandman and Goblin in it. I think they just put Venom in for the money. Venom is a key character and could have been used in his own movie (Spider-Man 4) against Spidey and then a team-up movie against Carnage (Spider-Man 5). I felt Sandman was underused and could have had a bigger impact on Spidey. I wanted to know more about Sandman in the movie. I wanted Sandman to have an impact like Doc Ock had in 2. Raimi took a big step in putting three villains in this one. Even though it kind of worked, it could have been better with just the simple two.

Venom didn't affect this movie one way or the other. The movie was going downhill long before Venom even appeared. The problem was for 40 minutes in the middle of the movie after Sandman is first defeated... NOTHING EXCITING HAPPENS. That's the problem with it.

The thing is...even though Venom was criminally underused, it doesn't take away from the fact that when he was on screen, he was perfect.

The sharp teeth, the menacing presence, the movements, the sadistic sense of humor...it was all there and Topher, despite his physical differences from the original character, WAS Eddie Brock. For his short amount of screen time, Venom was extremely effective. That's why I doubt that Raimi hates the character the way that many claim he does--if he hated Venom, he wouldn't have done such a kickass representation.

Venom was exactly what the movie needed for that finale and he filled his role dutifully; it's just that he needed more time, even if only another couple minutes to show him learning his powers and stalking Peter.

There were two plots they could have gone with. Harry's was a given. The two to focus on were the Sandman- a character whose plot is so throwaway the film had to validate it with a sick daughter and flashbacks the audience didn't buy- or Venom- the character marketed through the symbiote's presence and whose popularity far surpasses the confines of the Spiderverse.

The sad part is that no one would have to make this decision if things were handled better. If this film had just the Sandman without the killing rewrite added in it would have been fine, to have left Venom for SM4. If SM3 only had Venom and the Sandman was saved for an appropriately classic storyline in SM4 or beyond it would have been fine. Instead, Sam clashed a villain he loved with a villain he hardly gave time to develop and then overdeveloped Harry in the melee. That's why this film is the way it is.

I hope people will learn from this. Everyone jumped on Raimi's d*** for "listening to the fans" and putting Venom in the movie. This is a perfect example of how things can go wrong when directors do that. It's basically a no-win situation for comic movie directors. He puts venom in, not really wanting to and we get Spiderman 3. He doesn't put venom in, and probably makes a better movie but fans piss and moan about how much better it would be with venom. He should've cut sandman out. Like Comicfan said, we had uncle Ben closure in the second movie, we didn't need sandman in the movie. They're a million other ways for Pete to be in a mindset thats susceptible to the symbiote. It's disappointing.

I think the movie would have been better without Venom...but not without the symbiote. What I had hoped was that they developed eddie and symbiote more in SM3, with Sandman and Harry being the main bad guys, have Brock turn into Venom as a cliffhanger, and then have Venom be the main baddie in SM4 or Co-villian with the lizard.

I think either Sandman or Venom needed to go. I would say Sandman as you still had the forgivness angle from Harry and Peter could sitll go bad with the symbiote and Venom killing Harry at the end is better than Sandman. It also would have avoided a lousy team-up. On the other hand Sandman was also a great character and no Venom would have meant more of a focus on his guilt and more time with him and his daughter.

One of the two needed to go. With both they hurt each's development and caused the film's pacing to be uneven.

I think the movie would've worked well with no Sandman or no Venom. I personally would've removed Sandman first, but what's done is done and there is no use in dwelling on it.

I think Sandman should have been the only villain in SM3. His story was solid enough to carry the entire movie like Green Goblin and Doc Ock. Venom felt rushed and I didn't believe Eddie's motivation one bit. Maybe if they had him in more scenes where he was REALLY humiliated by Peter, then it could have worked. But I don't buy Eddie wanting peter dead for stealing a girl and getting him fired (when eddie knew what he was doing was wrong). Sandman had cool enough CGI scenes where he could have carried the movie alone, IMO. I'm really getting sick of these "more than one villain" plotlines. Why does every superhero movie have to have more than one villian? I do hope that Raimi and the original cast come back for SM4, but they should go back to having one villain.

Ok, this is gonna be a double post, but what the heck:

Sandman was in SM3 only because Sam wanted him to be in the movie, but it didn´t have a good solid story or character development he just stole time from black suit/eddy/venom and harry story

Venom was in SM3 only because Avi (and lets face it WE) wanted him to be in the movie, but it didn´t have a good solid story or character development he just stole time from Sandman being (*ugh*)uncle ben killer and harry story

the movie wold have been better if one of them was saved for SM4
(my choice would have been Venom in SM3 and sandman-with a better story- in SM4)

As I've said all along....and believe me no one's more happy about the success of the films, but I think it's time to move on. New director, new direction, new approach.

Sam Raimi loves the character. Okay, good, we get it. Peter Parker's kind of a nerdy loser ok, we get it.

Sam's vision and his sensibilities have never exactly jived with mine. And believe me,...I'm old school too.

I also don't think Toby's "the guy" that Sam and others keep saying he is. I never saw that and still don't. New actor, new direction.

After seeing SM3, I am woefully inclined to agree. I'm starting to wonder if it really is Raimi's vision that is the great part of these films...I like Bruce Campbell and all, but if a person with more room for change is present and Raimi's unable to return I don't think I'll be weeping.

Nope, just for the Battle Royal. In my opinion that was needed.

THANK YOU!

YOU ARE A GOD!

I could not have said it better myself!

Better without Venom? No. Better without Raimi's/Topher's Venom. Hell yes.

I agree, but I would have to pick Venom only because I think you need to build up the black costume for at least one film. They should have ended the film with Peter in the black suit!
