If they didn't put some personal drama for Superman to handle the new generation people would've continued continue the whole 'Superman is a stale character' thing. Making him a father adds some form human affect to him. Like it or not, Donner's version may have been perfect but it also made a lot of people hate Superman with a passion. That's a fact. This way he might gain some popularity.

I've spoken to several people on the net and off the not and a lot of them hate Superman because they find him to be an annoying do-gooder who has no character what so ever. They still haven't forgiven him for turning back the world. Donner's version was excellent but his version did cause hordes of people especially the new generation to hate his very guts.

: People always act this way if there is any change in the story material. It is laughable how fanboys get soooo up in arms over these things. Example: Spider-man has organic webbing. the movie is RUINED! Batman Begins is using the Burton costume the movie is RUINED! Wolverine is hitting on Rouge the movie is RUINED! I for one trust Singer and his ability to weave a captivating story that is firmly rooted in the characters. And I love the romantic theme alot. The story captures a very complex relationship between Superman and Lois Lane, and adds even more of a layer of complexity that her child is apparently the child of Superman. I can't believe some of you wanted the child to be Richards. I would feel insulted if Lois' child wasn't Superman's. I am glad that a Superman film is FINALLY treading new ground. After reading Ebert's ludicroius (sp) review I am more pleased that Singer decided to be bold and explore new possiblities. Just because every other Superman movie and TV show has treaded water and NOT advanced the storyline does not mean that Singer is forced to walk the same line. In Lois and Clark, the two were married and yet the existance of a child in SR is a shouting match for some. I don't get it. I have no problem with this new story twist, and as a matter of fact there are many DC comics that have used the same story of Superman with a child. Grant Morrison's DC One Million showcases a vast legacy for Superman starting with his son who was called Superman Secondus! So No don't give me that half-baked crap about (whine whine) "The kid ruined the movie." Because that is very lame. SR is gonna clean up at the box office and usher in a new generation of Superman fans.

Never seen this any where. Course being in my mid-20s I loved the Donner films. So no I don't think that you speak for most people. The impact Chris Reeve's Superman films left is STILL huge. I guarentee a VAST majority love Superman BECAUSE of the Donner films!

It's funny and more Biblical than you realize. Because in Revelations it says that in the last days, people would be haters of those who do good. Superman represents the path of righteousness and those that hate him more than likely are just intimidated by what he represents! That there is a way to STAND FIRM by your core convictions, and not waiver in them! I love Superman and his battle for Truth and Justice. It is a worthy fight! The most worth fight!

reversing Earth's rotation to reverse time is one of the things about Superman: the movie that most people dont like, but that doesn't mean that people hate the movie just because of that one part.

i don't know why you think most people hate Donner for making the original Superman, but Superman: the Movie is what made Superman an American icon. if anything Donner brought Superman to the mainstream and made Superman more than he was before the movie was made.

trust me when i say that Superman is as popular as he is today partly BECAUSE of the original movie. there's a reason why Singer hold the original 2 movies in high regard and is basing SR off of them...and it's not because everyone hated the originals.

You know once again about the kid. Has anyone else read "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tommorrow." It is a classic Superman story that closes out the Pre-Crisis storyline and is considered by many to be one of the greatest Superman stories ever written. Guess what? Superman has a Superson in that story and it only added to the greatness of the character! The kid will not take SR down!

Superman didn't reverse the Earth's rotation---he actually went backwards in time. It was just a poor, confusing respresentation of it.

That being said---yes, the kid is one of the worst aspects of Superman Returns. First of all, after FIVE cinematic attempts, we STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED THE PERFECT SUPERMAN FILM. Donner's film comes closer than the rest, but still missed a few points (its not timeless, Krypton's design was too weird, Superman saves cats from trees, campy Luthor, ugly Lois, etc).

It is almost embarassing to see how much they dropped the ball on this one. And they basically painted themselves into a corner by introducing a kid. God, the more I think about this film, the more it pisses me off.

And yes, I DID see it at a free screening this past Sunday.

um, correct me if I am wrong, but I thought Superman Returns comes right after Superman II, right? SUperman and Lois slept together in that movie right? Then Superman made Lois forget everything right? So I personally think it is logical. But I have a question THERE WAS A TRAILER FOR SUPERMAN III AT THE END OF RETURNS???!!! Like the original Superman III movie? I thought it was lost!

Seriously, the movie would have been 10X better without the distracting significant yet highly insignificant KID (and if you saw the movie, you will know what I mean by that)...hell, he was only a cheap gimmick/shock device...that COMPLETELY RUINS the movie!!!!!!! Much worse than anything in MUMMY RETURNS or LEGEND OF ZORRO, at least in those movies, the KID was a highly active and dynamic element of the story (even though they ruined their respective movies).

YES, I have seen the movie, I saw it last night at midnight (and I can confirm that the Spiderman III trailer was attached, which was awesome, but I am still worried on the amount of material in it). I didn't get home till about 3:30am...and then had to get up for work at 8am...that is dedication!!!

The FX was AWESOME, better than anything in X2 or X3...or Spiderman II...BUT, there were some things that just did not make sense. In some scenes, this Superman was powerful like he should be, and in other scenes, he was really under powered, like with the plane thing…and the missile thing. But the story was lackluster, and some things just did not make sense...like they were only thrown in because of the coolness factor. And yes, there IS a twist at the ending which does make this whole KID thing a cheap gimmick...he completely RUINED THE MOVIE!!! This movie with the kid is a 4 on a scale of 1-10.

Routh and the FX are the only good things about this moive. Believe it or not, Routh was awesome as Superman, though he did not sell me on Clark Kent. He is not a very good Clark...it is the way he delivers his lines, and he is just too stiff. When the promo pictures were released, I really did not like the Super Suit, but on screen, it is much better looking, and yes it is dark, but it is also very bright in some scenes, which made me happy. Because I want the colors to be very bright, and they were in various day light scenes.

On the other hand, Spacey sucked...too campy even if he was sadistic, he could have been sadistic without being campy! He should have been like how he was towards the end of Usual Suspects or even in K-PAX…he is a great actor and I think that his approach to LEX was the wrong way to go. He can do serious and sadistic…he was a bit screwed in the head in LA Confidential too being so hung up on Ego, he could have just been really great as a super serious LEX. I’m sorry to all the Smallville haters out there, but the incantation of LEX on Smallville, is one of the best ever! Serious, Evil, and a Billionaire…that is the way to go. OR Lex like how he was depicted on Superman The Animated Series (Not the JLU though, because towards the end, he was getting completely insane). Leave the campy crap out of my movie please! If I want to see the Joker, I’ll watch a Batman movie. Lois was okay…though, I think she was miscast…Kate did not sell me. To be honest, they should have went with an unknown…that would have been the best thing that they could have done with that IMHO. But yeah, the KID killed this movie for me. Without the STUPID KID...the movie would have been an easy 7 or 8 out of 10.

Oh on a side note, I thought that whole PIANO thing was just false rumors, and was not going to be in the movie???

They should have just left out the KID factor, and saved it for a sequel…

A perfectly fine, creative, true blue Superman movie could have been made WITHOUT stupid little Jason, or Kitty for that matter. If they needed another superpower being, they should have brought in Supergirl or hell, even Krypto. Something from the comics. And another thing. Superman got buckwild with Lois after he lost his powers, right, so there better be an explaination of why Jason has powers. Don't ignore it, Singerman. I want a reason.

And is someone comes at me with a vague history comment, and makes mention that the deed might have been done at a different time, while Superman had his powers, then I want a reason why the DNA is compatible.

I want a reason, either way. And then kill the little bugger before the sequel. Kill Jason before the sequel to the sequel to the sequel of Superman The Movie.

I've read the spoilers but will not comment on how I feel about the direction the kid takes. I'm happy to see Superman on screen again, in what I think will be the best vision of the Man of Steel on film yet. I can't wait for tonight. Hope everyone enjoys!!
