At the Warner Bros. panel at Comic-Con in San Diego today, director Bryan Singer said that he was in talks with the studio about a sequel to Superman Returns. He hadn't concluded a deal to do it yet, which he said is always "iffy," but he has every intention to do a sequel for 2009, and said that while Superman Returns reintroduced the character for new people, the next one will let him get all "Wrath of Khan on it." He added that you can expect an alien villain in the sequel.

He also joked that he has to see who's left in the cast if he ever were to return to the "X-Men" franchise. Ironically, right before being asked about it, he had been joined on the dias by original Superman director Richard Donner, whose wife Lauren Shuler Donner produced the first two "X-Men" movies.

In Star Trek II Khan came back with only one thing on his mind, hurting james kirk, and what a great film it was, but that quote by bryan is kinda worrying, it pretty much confirms Zod will be returning to hurt superman, then again him saying alien villian may mean someone else.

Darkseid, Mongul, Brainiac.

Already posted in the comic con thread:)

Remember that Mike and Dan said they didnt want Zod and insulted his leather clad outfit as well.

I think Brainiac is likely. He seems soulless, robotic, and menacing enough to push Superman over the edge like Khan did for Kirk.

IT better not be ZOD else that will suck ass on soooooo many levels.

Jeez, I can see it now. In wrath of Kahn Kirk had a son. Now Supes has a son. Kahn comes back for revenge. Now Zod comes back for revenge. Damn Singer Come up with something new. Hire Nicholas Meyer to write the thing if your going to rip it off. At least he will come up with something not done before.

I think it's fair to say that he is using the example as a metaphor. STI was a good flick, but really nothing special. It was a total space opera. It lacked the action and excitement that ST fans came to expect of ST:TOS. But Wrath of Kahn was a total mind blowing ST action film.

I think it's a little to early in the game to be taking things this literally, relax, wait a year until the sequel wheels start turning.

Zod is awful...... an awful awful chocie.

This series needs to move away from the past

Give us a new Villain.... not a carbon copy of Superman

Kahn..... was actualy stronger then Captain Kirk... Physicaly Kirck was not a good match for Kahn.

please... NO MORE ZOD.

Brainiac is the better and smarter choice.

It's gonna be Zod, for the analogy to work, it has to be a character we already know.

Ummmmm......Zod!

Horrible decision, if true, by the way.

I hope it isn't Zod. I love Zod. He's my favorite comic book film villian. But I want Singer to do something new.

I mean with millions of dollars and the whole DC/Superman history to pluck stories and ideas from, not to mention an almost limitless supply of other sources, why go back and redo Superman 2, with a dash of Wrath of Khan?

If Star Trek Nemesis failed to pull this off, and Singer did do a cameo on that film, why does he even want to attempt it?

I like Singer, but if he goes with Zod and a rehash of Superman 2, he's going to make it pretty easy to keep this money in pocket. Or spend it on Captain America-which I think is also scheduled in 2009 too-instead.

You guys are all so dumb.

Theres no indication at all in that statement that Zod will be used. At least save your complaints till you have concrete proof before whining.

Stop worrying folks. Its going to be Brainiac. Superman didn't throw NK into space for nothing. Someone or some "alien" will discover NK with Superman's crystals still on it along with the video Lex's henchman shot documenting their crimes & what the crystals were capable of.

It will probably be brainiac.

I think you're on the right path there.....

Jesus Christ you people are dumb. "Oh my God, he referenced a famous sequel when talking about his sequel! THAT MEANS ZOD!"

Does being so stupid take practice?

Tee Hee!

Well seeing as Zod is supposed to be or was a great military general of Krypton. Why not have him come back. Except if they continue with the back story, have him be human or powerless. Perhaps he releases Brainiac? Using Zod again could have some decent possibilities. He just doesnt have to be the supervillian just the key to releasing something more dangerous.

If he is using Zod or Zod's return, Singer will officially seal his doom as a hack for me.

There are a plethora of villians that he could use, and I'd love to see him use a Superman villian that isn't well known. I get tired, extremely tired, of hearing how Batman's rogue gallery is the best. I just had to hear that **** from Timm today.

Yes, they're great, but most of them have gotten a chance to shine in all his incarnations, BTAS, TNBA, Batman, Adam West...etc. With Superman it's Brianiac, Luthor, Luthor, Luthor and Darksied. Metallo and the Parasite come in occassionally, but it's been those three or a form of those three for the past ten years! Let's see someone else for a change!!!!!

I'm going for a straight comic villian like Doomsday, and if I had my way I'd like to see him teamed with a scientist like Emil Hamilton...aka...Ruin. I'm not totally for Doomsday as THE villian, but IMO it's the perfect villian for the rock in space and Ruin is good for the pyschological angle because we need a Luthor-type character, not necessarily Luthor himself all the damn time.

Those are my choices for villian(s) if there is a sequel.

Singer's analogy is pretty simple and I think too many people are reading way to much into it. As a Star Trek Fan Singer knows the feedback and reception the first Trek movie faced but there are similarities to SR. He had to reintroduce the characters to the world and set the tone of their relationships, just as ST:TMP did. ST2:TWOK was able to jump right in with the crew and go full speed ahead and that is what I'm sure he's intimating about his vision for a sequel. I really don't think we need to be reading too much into plot line similiarities between the two movies - its more of the atmosphere in which he will operate under that he is referring to.

Outside of comic geeks, no one has any idea of Superman's villains, outside of Luthor. Using Brainiac may seem like old hat to you, but he would be new to the general audience and he is a million times better than the other villains you mentioned. Doomsday ios nothing more than a plot device and Ruin is just a stupid idea (do you know how convoluted to be to introduce Emil hamilton and make reveal him to be a villain in one movie.) Brainiac is Superman's second greatest villain for a reason and should get a chance to shine on the silver screen.

And the bar keeps rolling backwards....

Whatever...he got his point across, but Superman's was missed in that. Hopefully, if he does do the sequel, he will hae a beter take on Superman...because seriously the man doesn't know ****.

Believe me...his Q&A succession was limited considering he'd just done the first Superman movie in twenty years.
