Dark Phoenix X-Men: Dark Phoenix Score - Hans Zimmer To Compose

I think it sounds utterly stupendous so far. Almost immediate love. I feel it's reminiscent of Amazing Spider-Man 2 (which I think is one of the best comic book movie scores ever), but with a more haunting, eerie feel. Even reminded me of the animated series theme when it picks up the pace.
I loved Zimmer's score for ASM2, but I didn't recognize any similarities between it and the clips I posted. Hopefully it's just the short runtime that's doing the music an injustice and not the soundtrack itself.

Apparently Zimmer has spent a lot of time rewriting the score through its various cuts and reshoots. It'd be interesting to hear what the unused material sounded like, and whether it was rejected for a different style or simply due to the changes in how the re-edited scenes were paced and cut.

I'm somewhat concerned that an album release won't happen due to the Disney merger.

Zimmer's recent scores has almost always gotten a physical release. Especially for big movies.

Dark Phoenix may be digital-only right now, but I do see a specialty label like Intrada or La La Land Records doing a CD release later on. (Both companies have working relationships with Fox and Disney.)

I don’t see how the merger would hurt chances of a release. All recent Disney films have had a release, Marvel as well, unless I’m mistaken.

So it's been confirmed that an OST is coming. It will be two discs, the first covering the score as it exists in the film, the second containing suites and ideas that went unused in the final mix. No release date or label yet, but hopefully it'll be released sometime next month.

I was so hoping we’d get to hear the unused score for the original cut and third acts, so, this is great news!

Same here! It’ll likely include concept themes like when he did Man of Steel. Can’t wait to hear this!

"It's gonna be 2 CDs. First CD will be film score. Second will be more suites & ideas (as I told you Hans wrote a lot of music within the past 1.5 year). No release date yet, but you bet they are rushing to have it ready in 10 days..."

I have never been so excited for an X-Men film score before! Friday’s too far away!

  1. Gap (8:07)
  2. Dark (4:27)
  3. Frameshift (8:15)
  4. Amity (5:52)
  5. Intimate (10:14)
  6. Negative (3:58)
  7. Deletion (4:51)
  8. Reckless (9:35)
  9. Insertion (7:56)
  10. Coda (4:40)
Thanks for the heads up, so far I'm listening track 2, it's as Zimmer as it can get.

That Phoenix motif and theme... one minute it’s dark and terrifying, then it’s sad and tragic and then, at the end, beautiful and triumphant. I can’t wait to hear it in full!

The score was garbage. It's just dull generic brooding synthesized tones. There's no epic grandness. There's a little bit of choral singing for Phoenix but that's about it. The X-Men have no theme to speak of.

Zimmer is really past his prime. None of the previous music themes from the older movies are used at all, including Ottman's. At least Ottman's music sounded rousing and epic for the films he scored.

Sounded like Zimmer did this all from a computer over the weekend and didn't use any actual orchestra at all.

It doesn't deserve it.

Absolute sensational work, once again by Hans, I didn't know it was him until the end of the movie, and I was like.. .duh... no wonder I liked it so much

I have to say I recall none of the music after watching. It def wasn’t bad , but for me- not memorable at all. I still remember X3’s music tho.

The X-Men do have a theme, and for my money, it's the very best of the franchise. It's even the most similar to the animated series theme. It was epic and moving. "Gap" on the OST, and also featured in "Reckless". The Phoenix theme isn't better than Powell's as a piece of stand alone music, but it's very close IMO. It's more haunting. Last Stand has an overly whimsical feel to it, that just clashes with everything.

Could you even imagine Ottman's score in Dark Phoenix? Holy god that would be awful. Or Powell's, even worse. It does NOT fit the tone what so ever. Just as it wouldn't have fit X-Men 1. Too grandiose for a smaller scale movie. Han's music fit's the small scale, grounded, dark tone of DP perfectly.

I'd argue it's one of the best scores of the year.

I really enjoyed the use of "Gap" throughout the film. It actually felt quite ominous and fitting for a film that marked the end of a 20 year legacy of films.

Beyond Gap I didn't really notice the score. I'll have to give it a listen later.

I wouldn't say Zimmer is past it at all but his production is remarkable.
