Sequels X-Men: First Class

This I can't agree with. Most of the interactions in the film were between Wolverine and someone else, and even worse in X3 he was even less true to his comic book character. Yeah, Wolverine the leader of the X-men?

He was far less in focus then in X1 and X2 (which were pretty much "wolverine and his story with the x-men" films. Storm stepped up and became far more prominant, as did beast, jean, iceman, and kitty. Wolverine was shoved back a lil, magneto and xavier remained the same, and rogue and mystique got shoved back alot. X3 was far more about "the X-men"

But I agree that Singer changed a lot, and fans have every right to be dissapointed, upset, etc at them. But they never bothered me too much (aside from Cyclops and Storm being shallow characters). For example, people didn't like his Rogue because she was so different from comic book Rogue, but I absolutely love the character. She provided so much heart and emotion in X1 and his ability to tell a story and get the message through was great, and that's what I feel is most important. Not mutants using their powers for "fun" or flying all over the place.

You need a nice mix of both though. I also find it very contradictory for the X-men's message (as well as a gay directors) of "not being ashamed of who you are" to only use there abilities when needed, essentially hiding who they really are.

X3 broke that and actually did it well... (storm flying, causing the clouds to twirl while thinking, phat sitting, iceman and the fountain, nearly every scene angel was in, beast hanging upside down, etc...)

only real scenes i can think of in X1 and X2 that did that really just involved iceman... (the ice rose in X1, and freezing a soda in X2)

Yes, being made leader of the team is being "shoved back a little." The whole plot was him saving the day at the end, when in X1 and X2 it was a group effort to stop the final threat.

And how did Jean become more prominent? Even Famke complained that she didn't get enough to do. And adding Beast and Kitty in that list of more prominent characters is funny seeing X3 is the first film they're even main cast members in. You might as well say Nightcrawler became less prominent in X3 if you're gonna go by that logic. And it's funny that Colossus had more lines and more to do in his cameo in X2 then all his scenes as an X-Man in X3, the movie thats supposedly more about the X-Men.

I think what spideyboy meant that even though Famke was not used right in her role for jean in that movie , you have to admit she was a presence on screen. even though they made her just stand there. it was just shown in the worst way possible kinda like cyclops was used in the worst way possible in x2. seeing he was under mind control but she was seen more then marden ever was. who was gone in most of the movie in 2.

And still all X3 did was still fallow the formula x2 and one did. most people know there isn't much of a script to those movies. it was said often enough. And they keep saying those movies needed better script writers.

So guess what? their still all in the same spot for me. They all lacked something script wise that's some thing I know and feel could have been done better. ways better. but they chose not to do so. cause they were in the I don't want to type of mind set. mostly the producers since they hires the writers and game less things to work with as possible. bah.

I would love to see these original treatments Singer had in the first drafts of the X-Men script finally be given the light of day in the First Class film...

EXT. SKY - DAY

Bright, bright blue framing a blinding white sun.

PAN DOWN AGAIN TO REVEAL:

The cracked, drought-stricken soil of nowhere.

TITLES:

KENYA - 1978

A group of children at play. Tribal children who,
without the help of the titles, could be from any age.

They run through a tiny village of tents, playing. Every
child holds a long reed-like stick and they chase each
other playing their version of tag.

As each child is tapped, they chase the others. Each
trying to avoid being "it", though never going far enough
away to miss the fun.

One girl in particular. A PRETTY GIRL OF 12, with
unusual white hair, is tagged and immediately shunned.

She chases kids this way and that, but to no avail. She
is not strong enough, nor agile enough, to win.

She tumbles and lands on her stick, snapping it. She
stands and, when the children see that her stick is
broken, they begin to giggle.

The giggles become laughter and the laughter becomes a
taunt, and before we even realize, the inherent cruelty
of children let loose becomes evident.

They have now formed a circle, at first avoiding her
touch with distance, but now growing tighter with menace.
In the unspoken manner of children at prey, the group
begins to chant in their native tongue - a song we have
not heard but sung in a way none-too inviting. They
begin to poke at her with the reeds, driving her back.

The girl now moves to the center of the circle, no longer
wishing to tag anyone.

ONE DEVIOUS CHILD seems to get an idea. He takes his
stick and smacks it across her shoulder. She turns to
face the child and another swings his stick across her
back with a solid THWACK. Before long, mob rule gives
way and all the kids are swinging at her and laughing.

It grows to the brink of frenzy, the laughing and the
shouting not too unlike the noise of the previous scene.

So much so, we may miss the first flake of snow. The
children certainly do. It is snowing for a good ten
seconds before the last of them stops.

By then, the snow is thick as flies and wafting down to
melt instantly on the hot African soil that has never
seen snow before.

ANGLE ON:

Adults come out of their huts and in from the fields and
the whole of the village is soon gathered around the
little girl, staring up from the clear blue sky and the
snow that falls from nowhere. From nothing.

One by one, all eyes fall on the little girl and the
looks of curiosity become looks of fear. Of
superstition.

Punctuated by a solid thump.

And then another.

AN OLD MAN looks down at his feet and sees a tiny,
misshapen ball of ice, no bigger than his eye. He looks
at it, bites it, then pops it in his mouth - breath
turning to steam.

Another such chunk of ice pops him on the head. THE
CROWD LAUGHS.

They look up again and see that mixed with the snow are
tiny pellets of hail, seeming to increase in number as
the snow mysteriously wanes.

And the pellets are getting larger. Until they land as
hunks.

The white haired girl drops to the ground and covers her
head as hailstones the size of baseballs plow into the
Earth.

Before long, tents are collapsing and panic ensues.

And all along the white haired girl sits huddled in the
dust, crying.

As hailstones fall in a circle around her, never coming
closer than then a few feet or so.

INT. HIGH SCHOOL GYMNASIUM - NIGHT

ONE MORE SKY. This one a backdrop. Cheap paint and
tissue paper hung with hooks on a wall just behind the
basket on a full court.

As we pull back, we see the skyline of New York, crudely
made out with its silhouette buildings of dark gray and
black - windows of yellow.

Among the famous landmarks represented is the Statue of
Liberty, complete with a real light bulb burning in the
torch.

We are at a prom. The theme is RHAPSODY IN BLUE and the
decor has made tragic efforts to show it. The
tablecloths are blue, the napkins are blue - far too many
of the tuxes are powder blue, and the blue eye shadow is
as heavy as expected.

Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" gives painful indication
of the era, but here it is, nonetheless:

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA - 1986

MOVE ACROSS THE FLOOR and through the swaying, clutching,
sweating dancers to the bathroom.

Through the door to the usual -

INT. BOYS BATHROOM - NIGHT

Several boys are here, bow ties undone - unclipped in
most cases. Smoking, drinking from whatever inventive
container was used to smuggle in booze. Breath freshener
and Visine are the chaser.

Some of the guys are rolling joints while others make the
sad effort to wave smoke away. Who are they kidding?
It's a fog in here.

MOVE DOWN THE ROW OF TOILET STALLS to one in particular.
Here we find A FRECKLED KID standing in front of mirror,
clearly holding himself up from the effect of God knows
what.

He talks to his friend in the he stall behind him.

FRECKLED KID
Man, what's the matter with you?

His friend is on the toilet with his head in his hands.
He seems to be in some pain. He is SCOTT SUMMERS - AGE
17.

FRECKLED KID (contíd)
Dude. Lighten up. She's just a girl.
You just gotta-

SCOTT
No, my eyes... my eyes are killing me.

The Freckled kid offers a small plastic bottle.

FRECKLED KID
You want some Visine, man?

SCOTT
My... eyes...

The freckled kid looks and sees that Scott's eyes are
watering so badly that tears are literally streaming
through his fingers.

He goes back to the mirror to look at his own.

SCOTT
... they're burning...

The freckled kid turns back to him.

FRECKLED KID
Dude, how much did you smoke?

SCOTT
I didn't smoke anything.

Scott looks up, taking his hands away, revealing for an
instant that his eyes are merely bright red embers in his
head. Featureless but for the color.

Freckles takes a step back.

INT. GYM - OUTSIDE BOYS ROOM - NIGHT

A blinding flash of light shows through the frosted glass
in the double door and cuts through the crack into the
dark of the gym.

All who see it are stunned. Frozen. A lingering moment
of confusion, then:

BOOM, the doors to the Boys Room burst open and the
occupants scatter into the gym.

INT. GYM - STALL - NIGHT

Freckles is still there, legs locked.

FRECKLES' P.O.V.

He looks at Scott who is now crying meekly in the stall,
covering his eyes again -- afraid to open them.

The door of the stall across from him swings closed TO
REVEAL:

A HOLE, PUNCHED THROUGH THE STALL DOOR framing Scott's
face perfectly. Pull back to reveal that the hole
continues through the wall, into the girl's bathroom next
door.

In the corner several girls huddle together, they are
afraid.

it's just very interesting to me to see how suddenly everyone's opinion on singer suddenly change now that we've gotten bad xmen movies and he's signed on for First Class is all. The guy is no savior, and It's incredibly humorous to see people naively treat him like one.

My opinion has never changed on him Spidey, not once, several people on this board can vouch for me in that regard.

I have always thought he was an excellent film-maker, I still think X2 is one of the best CB movies ever, and I thought SR was superb movie as well. I have always hoped and prayed that he would return to the franchise, I just previously never thought it was possible, plenty of others have been the same as well.

To me, he is saviour in that I actually have an active interest in this franchise about my favourite characters again.

To be honest, at the time not many people blamed Singer for leaving either, the majority of people had sympathy for him. Another thing I remember at the time was that when Fox was negotiating with him, the budget they offered for the movie was no were near what Ratner eventually got.

and? one great x-men movie does not suddenly make him a god. before X3 came out people still found alot of faults in the 2 singer x-men films. Story wise they were great, but most of us agreed they were not "the x-men" but none the less still good films.

Fantastic Four (more or less), ironman, spider-man, inc hulk, all proved you dont have to sacrafice majority of source material in order to tell your film. Singer changed alot of what made the X-men so great in order to make it feel "more real". I will never say his films were bad (they werent at all) X2 is still one of my top comic films... but I still think X3 made it feel much more like the comic... for the reasons below

-The X-men finally fought as a team
-The mutants weren't restrained to using there powers only when needed
-Mutants were finally allowed to fly
-They didn't focus on wolverine for the majority of the time
-I also feel the action scenes were a bit better. At least not "wolverine fights this person"

Did we watch the same movie Spidey? Wolvie had well more screen-time than anyone else in X3, it totally focused on him.

I'll admit my enthusiasm for Singer has waned quite a bit since SR. And, looking back on X1 and X2, there were quite a few things that Singer dropped the ball on, imo ( mainly in casting and characterization choices ).

That being said, I preferred Singer's take on X-men more than SR. And I still credit Singer with, in essence, revitalizing the whole CB movie genre. Sure there was Blade, but X-men was the first "mainstream" CB property attempted since the abomination that was Batman + Robin. Singer showed that you can take these CB properties and treat them with intelligence and seriousness and make us believe that these characters can exist in our present day world.

I also believe in redemption and second chances. After all, Schumacher (sp?) gave us Batman Forever and B+R, but then he gave us Phantom of the Opera, which I personally loved.

That's why, I'm actually rooting for Singer with First Class. And, I'm just hoping they use this chance to "reboot" or "retconn" the franchise.

I mean.....this is a rare chance for the original director to come back to the table and tell us the story from the beginning....to, in a sense, start over. Even if it's not a "reboot" per se......hopefully Singer can use this opportunity to fix his past "mistakes" in the previous X-films.

Like, with Cyclops, he can look back and see where he went wrong with the character and what he could have done better and what fans wanted to see. Same with Storm....Jean, etc.

I'm sure since X1 and X2 there have been many more story arcs that he can use as inspiration, and advancements in FX tech that will allow him to display the mutants' powers in ways not possible before......

IOW.....Singer has been given the rare chance to rewrite his own history.....there's so much untapped potential with X-men franchise. There's so many things we have yet to see, not just in terms of powers but storylines and proper characterizations.....

Now is not the time to be lazy and safe....to fall back on and repeat the familiar.

Im not an user of too many words.... so Ill only say that this will be a great movie!!

Im sure most of us will enjoy it as kids.

Time will tell.

Quite a few people here have been posting their reservations about having him back. The people who were fans of Singer's films are happy to have him back. What's the big deal about that?

In what universe was this X3 released? I must have missed it.

They basically had him take over Cyclops' role in X3. Wolverine's my favorite, but come on...even I knew that was ridiculous.

I like Wolverine too....but I am getting pretty tired of the movie Wolvie......

for once, I'd like to see an X-men movie that does NOT focus on Wolverine.....it's time to let the other mutants shine!!

a very brief mention or cameo may be ok......but I'd rather not have Wolverine show up in First Class.........

It's called money. Hugh Jackman brings in tons of cash.

not enough, seeing Wolverine boxoffice, lol

F***, Logan.

Is it true, is Singer on board to direct, I read he said so at the Avatar premiere?

yes...it's true....Singer is back and directing First Class.....

I wonder though if this will affect the other spin-off films ( Magneto, Deadpool, Wolverine 2, etc. )....

with the original director back at the helm.....will Singer also be involved in the other projects?

wasn't one of Singer's writer friends ( McQuarry or something ) in talks to write the Wolverine sequel? hmm......

Well it was doubtful for a while that Magneto was going to be made, so I'm guessing anything good from X-Men Origins: Magneto will be put into this film. I wouldn't be surprised if Singer had influence over the Wolverine sequel. I don't think Deadpool will be touched since it technically isn't a real X-Men film.

I'm hoping so too. It would be nice to see him back on the Wolverine sequel as well.

I'm guessing whatever they had planned for the Magneto origins film might be melded into this one, seeing as how it's apparently going to be about a 20-something Magneto and Xavier.

those cyclops and storm script scenes above sound great hope those are done for here and i know singer would do it well

that makes sense. I really didn't see how a "Magneto Origin" film would carry itself. As cool and awesome as Magneto is, he is definitely NOT Wolverine........

I do hope that whatever Singer plans for Magneto's backstory....it fits into the theme and setting he used in the opening sequence in X1.

That was such a different and powerful way to open a CB movie ( coupled with the eerie music during that scene ). I remembered when I first saw that scene......I didn't make the connection at first....but when the metal gate started warping, I was like "Holy ****! That's Magneto!!"
