So is this film (potentially series) gonna be a complete reboot and not be prequels to X-Men 1,2, or 3?

The thread for Wolverine's box office is here:

Discuss it on that thread if you want, but don't turn this thread into a Wolverine box office debate. This thread is to discuss the new film.
I agree the current X-Men series has alot of mileage on it. Assuming First Class lasts for 3 films thats a 6-9 year spanI don't want a reboot. The current trilogy isn't that bad to warrant one. I'd prefer that First Class be a prequel trilogy of some sort. In ideal it would tie-in to the first three movies, but have its own storyline.
that makes sense. I really didn't see how a "Magneto Origin" film would carry itself. As cool and awesome as Magneto is, he is definitely NOT Wolverine........
I do hope that whatever Singer plans for Magneto's backstory....it fits into the theme and setting he used in the opening sequence in X1.
That was such a different and powerful way to open a CB movie ( coupled with the eerie music during that scene ). I remembered when I first saw that scene......I didn't make the connection at first....but when the metal gate started warping, I was like "Holy ****! That's Magneto!!"
Heat Vision: So how did you end up coming back to "X-Men"?
Bryan Singer: It started with a conversation between (Fox co-chairman) Tom Rothman and I some time ago. We not only concluded a deal, but Ive written a pretty concise treatment. Theres a story that I really want to tell.
Heat Vision: What is the story?
Singer: I cant tell you that; its secret. But its basically about the formation of the X-Men. How they began and the relationship between a young Xavier and a young Magneto.
Heat Vision: I remember when you left "X3" to do "Superman Returns." It wasnt under the best of circumstances.
Singer: A lot of that was comical and exaggerated. When you set up a rather lucrative franchise and produce one of the company's biggest television shows ("House"), I think there is a lot of good energy on a business level.
But also, Tom Rothman and I have a very strong relationship from those early days of "X-Men 1" when he ascended to the chairmanship and I was involved in this very important movie for the studio. We bonded then. So I think he was frustrated then, as was I, because I couldnt do a third "X-Men," but that moment of frustration passed.
We have always looked at different projects to do together, but the timing was never right to do something like this. But now, it's been about 10 years since the first "X-Men," and this is a nice opportunity to look back at the origins of that universe.
Heat Vision: Do you think the X-Men can exhaust themselves? You've got the original three, you've got "Wolverine," you've got a "Deadpool" and "Magneto" in the works ...
Singer: This story would probably utilize some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto, so it might supersede that because this would explore that relationship between a young energetic professor and a disenfranchised victim of the Holocaust.
But no, I dont see an exhaustion. The X-Men universe is boundless. These are great characters. And as young characters, they are quite different than the characters we have seen in the contemporary movies.
Heat Vision: Would you do "Jack the Giant Killer" first?
Singer: Right now that is the plan. Unless there's a problem in the development process. There is a script for "Jack"; we're in visual development. We've got artwork and pre-viz that we are doing. But you never know how things go.
I have a writer named Jamie Moss working on "First Class."
Heat Vision: Why did you choose to work with him?
Singer: He's a really good writer, and of the writers I met with, he interpreted my story the best and brought the most to it. Because I'm so actively involved in the script development of my movies, I'm very hands-on, I need a certain kind of writer and a certain kind of availability to me. And he fit that bill. He's quite talented.
I suggest you rewatch. X1 dealt with Rogue and Wolverine's journey into meeting and fitting in with the X-men and helping them defeat magneto and his brotherhood, X2 was about Wolverine's past coming back to haunt him and his new team, X3 dealt with The X-men trying to save there own as well as fighting the largest threat to mutant kind.In bizarro land!
Yes, being made leader of the team is being "shoved back a little."The whole plot was him saving the day at the end, when in X1 and X2 it was a group effort to stop the final threat.
And how did Jean become more prominent? Even Famke complained that she didn't get enough to do. And adding Beast and Kitty in that list of more prominent characters is funny seeing X3 is the first film they're even main cast members in. You might as well say Nightcrawler became less prominent in X3 if you're gonna go by that logic. And it's funny that Colossus had more lines and more to do in his cameo in X2 then all his scenes as an X-Man in X3, the movie thats supposedly more about the X-Men.
Did we watch the same movie Spidey? Wolvie had well more screen-time than anyone else in X3, it totally focused on him.
Quite a few people here have been posting their reservations about having him back. The people who were fans of Singer's films are happy to have him back. What's the big deal about that?
yes...it's true....Singer is back and directing First Class.....
I wonder though if this will affect the other spin-off films ( Magneto, Deadpool, Wolverine 2, etc. )....
with the original director back at the helm.....will Singer also be involved in the other projects?
wasn't one of Singer's writer friends ( McQuarry or something ) in talks to write the Wolverine sequel? hmm......

Someone needs to go to the Giant Killer development area and scribble over all of their work.

their was some team moments in X1, the Liberty Island scene they all pulled their powers to help Logan stop Magneto's machine...X2 jean/storm in the church to get kurt and their scene in the blackbird, but i get what people are saying they didn't fight as a team even in X3 they didn't fight as a team they still had their own individual battles;Logan/Juggs,Storm/Omegas,Storm/Callisto,etc the only time they fought as a team was to stop Magneto...all "team" moments didn't make the film;Storm's wave/Bobby & Colossus vs Phat/Storm,Logan vs. Juggs
X1-2 had subtle team-up moments, and x3 really only let Storm get loose w/her powers, i always thought Storm's power scenes was the highlight of the X films
truthfully I could've done w/o Kitty in X3, she didnt bring anything new to the movie and that chase scene w/Juggs could've been a fight w/Juggs & Colossus
I now finally realized the writers didn't know what to do w/Rogue, power wise and thats why she didn't do anything in X2-3...just imagine the opening Danger room scene if her & Storm were flying together and she used her strength to stop a heavy piece of debris from falling on Colossus...and the simple reason for her new powers is that they evolved...if the audience can except an alter ego randomly calling itself "phoenix" then her mutation evolving would make sense...
never said they couldn't voice there like for him, just that like with most comic films they shouldn't praise anything yet. Hell people praised raimi after spidey 2... and look what we got for 3... just telling people to be cautious is all.
glad no magneto movie is happening now goyer would of raped that up lol
I don't think Singer is best suited for bright, lively, enthusiastic kids learning to grow and cope with their problems. He did a great job in X-1 but the focus wasn't on the kids as much as it was the main characters. He is better off with the more mature, thematic, characterization stuff with older veteran actors. Magneto was an obvious choice, but maybe Fox just decided it was cheaper to do a 2 in 1.
In X2 he did a good job with the Iceman-Pyro-Rogue scenes. Singer's presence for me only assures me there will still be serious and mature themes in the film when it comes to the teens growing up and accepting who they are instead of just making the story about teen angst and romance.
