DC Animation ‘Batman: Caped Crusader’: Animated Series From Bruce Timm, J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves Greenlit

Much as I love the Nolan/Reeves model of Batman kicking off escalation that results in his rogues gallery, I also like the idea that one of the villains could be at their sewing machine, putting together a costume, and then a news bulletin hits regarding Batman and they think to themselves “I can’t believe that ****er beat me to it.”

2:45pm-3:45pm. Batman: Caped Crusader (Screening Presentation & Panel)

Join executive producer Matt Reeves and cast members Hamish Linklater, Jamie Chung and Minnie Driver for the world-premiere screening of the upcoming and highly anticipated series followed by a moderated Q&A where they will discuss their characters and tease key storylines in the upcoming season. From Warner Bros. Animation, Bad Robot Productions, 6th & Idaho, and based on DC characters, the series is a reimagining of the Batman mythology through the visionary lens of executive producers J.J. Abrams, Matt Reeves, and Bruce Timm. Batman: Caped Crusader executive producers also include Ed Brubaker, James Tucker, Daniel Pipski, Rachel Rusch Rich, and Sam Register. Room: 6BCF
Very curious who Minnie Driver is in this.

I mean we kinda got it with that Batman/Harley Quinn movie and the Arkham series.

With the former, I'm glad we saw Conroy Batman & Lester Nightwing patch things up and have a proper dynamic.

I feel like they already patched things up in TNBA?

IIRC, they met at the end of Old Wounds but we didn’t get to see it.

And then according to Babs in Batman Beyond, Dick is still bitter.

I assumed he was bitter that Barbra and Bruce were having an affair behind his back.

Batman straight up took out those criminals like bowling ball pins in that clip. :batman:

All my posts here and in the Batman TAS thread testify to how much I love what Timm and his teams are doing with Batman and I'm super excited about this new series.
... But I have some doubts about the technical aspect of the show that I need to share.

No problems at all with the designs, but in terms of animation and polishing, what has been shown, for now, seems a step down from the original series...
I know we won't get traditionnal handmade animation anymore, but there's plenty of production using computers, even puppet rigged animation, while still managing to get an organic feel to the final results. Here, things are feeling quite stiff to me...
Also, it may be a matter of taste, but for a claimed "noir" direction, I'd expect the imagery to be much darker. The work on light and shadow is minimal, both on the characters and the background. It really lacks atmosphere and depth to me. I think a bit of grain would have been welcome, to at least give the whole thing a little relief and some grit (and to tie these CGI cars and buildings to the rest of the art direction...).
Am I really alone on this?

I already had this feeling with part of the trailer, but this clip, without being too dramatic, worries me a bit. Sure, that won't stop the series from being thrilling, but in animation, I'd say the visuals represent at least 50% of the project's interest.
Again, I hope I don't sound like a spoiled child, having a new series like this for a Batman TAS fan like me is a dream. But when the announcement mentioned "state-of-the-art animation techniques", I was simply expecting something much more sophisticated. I suppose the budget must have been cut when the series was momentarily put on hold, as this seems to me to fall a little below productions like Justice League: Gods and Monsters or the short film Strange Days.

Despite this, like I said, I'm still really, really looking forward to watching the series, and my wallet is already worried about possible merchandising... :funny:
Oh, and I really like the music in that clip!

Stephens as Gentleman Ghost is pretty solid casting.

Looks great... I wonder if the split screen stuff they are doing is only for the promos or will actually be part of the show?

For the Batmobile chase clip, there were two versions of the same video with different splits: one fitting a conventional horizontal screen and the other fitting a vertical phone screen.
So, my deduction is that it's only part of the promo...

Otherwise, I really appreciate this new look at the series. Things move better than in the previous clip and the settings look less “asepticized”.
I can't wait to discover these new villains, I admit I don't really know them. Natalia Knight looks very Wednesday Adams! I like it!
And I really love that “old pulp” vibe we're discovering more and more. This is going to be a treat!

I read that we should get something Saturday through the IGN’s San Diego Comic-Con 2024 live show (source).
It's cool to see that the marketing is finally kicking a bit! I'm so ready!

Random observation : I spotted that one of Firebug's weapon tubes disappears for one frame when he moves in the new clip. :whoops:
