2008 Academy Awards

I think Viggo might get a nomination now, also Tommy Lee Jones for Valley of Elah.

The more I think about it the more I want Josh Brolin to get a Supporting Nomination...sadly he probably won't :(

Viggo MAY get nominated but there's too much competition. He has people like George Clooney, Johnny Depp, Denzel Washington, TOM HANKS, and Daniel Day-Lewis to compete with.

As for Tommy Lee Jones...he didn't get a Golden Globe nomination and (if I'm not mistaken) hasn't been nominated (or mentioned) in the other awards so far like Critic Choice Awards and National Board of Review.

But we'll see...

Did you see Rescue Dawn? Do you think that could pick up any nominations? I thought both Bale and Zahn were outstanding and the cinematography was top notch.

I am with ya Dark Donnie bud, RD was a great movie and I agree with you 100% that both Bale and Zahn deserve to get a nom for their work, sadly with the GG noms out and no love for either I have to say that the chance of this happening now is very slim :csad:

I just checked out the GG noms, and I am quite surprised, and a little pissed, that Ben Affleck got no recognition whatsoever, for either directing or writing. I think Simpsons could walk away with best animated, and I'm really happy to see Pushing Daisies got a lot of love on the television front.

I haven't seen Eastern Promises but why the hell is Cronenberg always dicked around... His film gets Best Picture Nom at the GGs but no best director nomination, poor Cronenberg gets no respect :(

has johnny depp ever won an academy award?? i don't think he has... he really deserves one.

If Todd is excellent, I'd love to see it sweep the Oscars!
I got to see it. It's truly a phenomenal piece of work - Burton's best film, really. But will it sweep the Oscars? Hard to say... it doesn't seem like their kind of film, though it will probably have a more passionate following and reaction than any of the other releases.

It'll be a grudge match between There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men.
Perhaps. They're hot films this year (I haven't caught THERE WILL BE BLOOD, yet, though I'm eagerly anticipating it), but they're more the kind of film that people admire rather than passionately love. They'll be critics' darlings, but will that transfer to Academy votes? We'll see.

Give this man a nomination or SOMETHING, damnit!

Eastern Promises is no where near his best picture, so for him to receive a lot of praise for that film would just seem silly and unjust... Good movie, and good direction, but not worthy of best director. After all there are 12 movies up for best picture and only five directors up.

It's kind of funny... I think Paul Thomas Anderson has been receiving the most praise I've heard for a director all year and he doesn't even get nominated... oh well.

Here's my top 15 for the year so far and how they held at with the GG nominations:
1 American Gangster (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director)
2 No Country for Old Men (Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor, Best Director, Best Screenplay)
3 Zodiac (NOTHING)
4 The Lookout (NOTHING)
5 Ratatouille (Best Animated Film)
6 Rescue Dawn (NOTHING)
7 3:10 to Yuma (NOTHING)
8 Eastern Promises (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Score)
9 Gone Baby Gone (NOTHING)
10 Sunshine (NOTHING)
11 Michael Clayton (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress)
12 Live Free or Die Hard (NOTHING)
13 Sicko (NOTHING)
14 Knocked Up (NOTHING)
15 Breach (NOTHING)

This is probably how I would have broken down the Actor categories:
Best Actor (Drama):
Russell Crowe "American Gangster"
Denzel Washington "American Gangster"
Joseph Gordon-Levitt "The Lookout"
Christian Bale "3:10 to Yuma"
Casey Affleck "Gone Baby Gone"

Best Supporting Actor
Jeremy Davies "Rescue Dawn"
Mark Ruffalo "Zodiac"
Javier Bardem "No Country for Old Men"
Tom Wilkinson "Michael Clayton"
Peter O'Toole "Ratatouille"

I haven't seen enough actress-driven movies this year to have enough nominations for those categories, but I would definitely include Jodie Foster for "Brave One"...

Christian Bale is SO overdue for a nomation BUT if it took 13 years for Johnny Depp to FINALLY start getting nominations then expect Bale to be award-less for the next couple of years.

The 300, Spidey & Transformers in the Running for VFX Oscar
Source: A1ant December 16, 2007

Variety reports that the following films are in consideration for the visual effects Oscar:

The entire list of 15, in alphabetical order, is: "Beowulf," "The Bourne Ultimatum," "Evan Almighty," "The Golden Compass," "Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix," "I Am Legend," "Live Free Or Die Hard," "National Treasure: Book Of Secrets," "Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End," "Ratatouille," "Spider-Man 3," "Sunshine," "300," "Transformers," and "The Water Horse."

Three of the films will receive a nomination in January.

There Will Be Blood got LA Film Critics main award, so I won't be surprised, if it wins Oscar for The Best Motion Picture.

The same goes to No Country For Old Men, which has a chance to get it.

WHat about vfx, GIVE IT TRANSFORMERS!

I think I Am Legend is a very serious contender for cinematography, sound mixing/editing, and pretty much any sort of art department award. Except costumes.

I heard cinematography in I Am Legend looked spectacular, so I also think it can get the award.

It's a technical award. The quality of the movie doesn't matter.
