2008 Academy Awards

I don't know what the Academy is more ******ed for: Not giving "Sweeney Todd" a Best Picture nom or giving f***ing "Surf's Up" a nod for best animated film over "The Simpsons Movie". "SURF'S UP"! OVER "THE SIMPSONS MOVIE"?!! YOU FAIL!!!!

Hey, Academy? You are f***tards. The only way you can make up for this is giving Johnny Depp the Oscar. And I hope if Johnny wins, he says what bastards you are for not nominating Tim Burton.

This a horrible list, im truly beyond dissapointment I have not seen ANY of the BP nominees and that is a true shame considering i had seen all of them last year.

Peace up! Agreed to the above.

Um maybe because Burton has been making the same looking film for the last 18 years?

its true. which is a shame. he's a good director and has done some brilliant films (along with some terrible films). but he hasnt progressed at all as an artist.

Sleepy Hollow? Sweeny Todd? The Batman films. Parts of Edward Scissorhands.

He makes great films, don't get me wrong. They all look the same though.

Way to gloss over Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mars Attacks, Planet of the Apes (probably the most "UN-Tim Burton" movie he's ever done) and freakin' ED WOOD!!

Go take a bath, you ninny!

Ok, so instead of all his movies, its all of them except for 4 films. I also forgot Frankenweenie, Ed Wood, and the Corpse Bride. Yeah, you are right, its not like he makes "all" his filims the same way. Only about 75% of them are done in the same style.

But they are his movies... he can do what ever he wants. i love Burtons style.

Some directors have a niche, and they work best in that field. I don't see how that's remotely a bad thing. It's not like they're recycling stories.

The Simpson's movie should have gotten a best animated movie nom.

what does it matter if they are the same?

if the movie is good it is good.

I'm really not suprised at the noms (except Juno...IMO was highly overrated, but it may end up being the dark horse winner). There were some glaring misses though. 3:10 to Yuma surely deserved a nod for one of the big 6 categories but I didn't see it anywhere. Rescue Dawn was also deserved a mention.

Stars React to Their Oscar Nods!

With the Oscar nominations just announced, the stars come to ET to reveal what the honor means to them!

"It's an honor to receive this nomination, which is undoubtedly the recognition of the work and talent of all those creative and professional people from my trade, that have inspired and improved me during all these years," 'No Country for Old Men' star and Best Supporting Actor nominee JAVIER BARDEM said. "And especially to the COEN brothers' genius, because they have raised the character of Chigurh into a dimension that goes beyond my performance."

DANIEL DAY-LEWIS, who's received buzz about his role in 'There Will Be Blood,' comments on his Best Actor nod. "You put me shoulder to shoulder with a group of fine actors. I'm proud to be in their company and to have the broader recognition for the film is a lovely thing. I couldn't be happier for PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON to whom we owe everything."

'There Will Be Blood' director Anderson was also thrilled with his nomination. "I'm delighted that 'There Will Be Blood' has been recognized by the Academy. These nominations are a testament to the cast and crew, who I am deeply grateful to, for their talent and collaboration."

TILDA SWINTON, honored with a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her 'Michael Clayton' role says she's excited by the news. "I am tickled pink at the nomination," she says. "This film has been such a labor of love and I am very proud of it. I couldn't be happier for our entire cast and crew and am thrilled for TONY [GILROY], GEORGE [CLOONEY],and TOM [WILKINSON]. I'm celebrating with my family today and couldn't think of a better place to be when I got the news."

'Atonement' star SAOIRSE RONAN, who also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress, says: "I would like to thank the Academy for this great honor. It wouldn't have been possible without the guidance and love of JOE WRIGHT, PAUL WEBSTER and everyone involved in the making of this beautiful, wonderful film. I would also like to acknowledge the support of my family and friends at home in Ireland."

sounds good:sleepy:

Yeah im really pissed about 3:10 to Yuma not being mentioned at all, I mean that is just ******ed.

I really thought American Gangster was going to get more than just art direction and Ruby Dee. That sucks.

I didn't see Surf's Up, but it looked pretty bad. Simpsons and TMNT both deserved noms over it.

I would've held off on nominations til we found out if the writers and actors are gonna screw over the show. If they are, screw rewarding 'em for it.

Really wish I got to see more of the nominees though. And by more, I mean practically all.

He said Burton "makes the same looking film" which I took to meaning as Tim makes the exact same thing each time. Most of his films are set in the Burtonesque design and aura but each story is different. Just like an artist. Brian Bolland's artwork for Gotham Knights is in the very same manner and style as his drawings for The Invisibles.

All of Martin Scorsese's films look the same too, they all carry the atmosphere of real life. He's been working that style since the 70s, doesn't mean it's bad because he hasn't tried a glossy Sky Captain look now does it? Just because Burton's latest movie bears a visual resemblance to his last doesn't it isn't good and he isn't worthy of Best Director.

Indeed, and I actually thought SWEENEY TODD demonstrated growth for the director. It had elements of his usual style, but it wasn't a regurgitation. It was tonally very different from any other Burton film.

I wasn't saying Burton is bad. I am just saying that if you want to get noticed by the Academy. You have to show something unique. Sweeney Todd looked visually like just another Burton movie. Nutt'in wrong with that, just isn't going to get your noticed.

I honestly don't think Burton gives a sh** about awards anyway.

Sweeney Todd looked visually like just another Burton movie.
I don't think it did. It certainly had Burtonesque visuals (notably in Sweeney's physical appearance), but his work with some new talent (production designer Dante Ferretti and cinematographer Dariusz Wolski) gave it a decidedly new feel.

I do have to agree with Mr. Socko here, not all his films are the "exact same". Just the inner life long Burton fan within feels he is long over due for that Best Director Oscar let alone Nomination...By the way I'm not emo ;-)

Not to mention the lack of Danny Elfman, who always scores his films.

Thing is, he may deserve recognition, but other directors did a better job this year than he did, as has probably been the case every other year he wasn't nominated. Had Sweeney Todd been a complete departure for him, the Acadamy might have been more willing to elevate his accomplishment with this film. At this point, it's "oh, Tim Burton did another Tim Burton film with a Tim Burton actor and a Tim Burton look." It takes away from looking at the quality of his work.
