Magic GM Otis Smith told the media on Saturday that Dwight Howard has asked to be traded on two separate occasions this week.

Orlando still hopes to keep Howard long-term, but the team is determined to get something in return rather than risk losing him as a free agent without compensation.

“We wouldn’t be who we are if we don’t take a look around all 29 teams and try to make the best deal for the Orlando Magic,” Smith said.

“He can have his list of teams that he would like to go to, and we’ve probably got a few on our list of teams that we would like,” Smith said. “But at the end of the day, we want him here and we want him in a Magic uniform for his career. With that said, we’re going to make the best possible deal that we can make if we have to trade him.”

The Nets, Lakers and Mavericks all have permission to speak with Howard's agent Dan Fegan.

Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports reports that Howard has requested a trade to the Nets.

Cap pace is the only bait these small market teams have... Their only hope, generally is to overpay and max guys out. You give them bad contracts for Paul and that's impossible. They'd be trapped.

It doesn't always work out (in fact it seldom does because the star gets stuck with little to work with and the team generally winds up battling for 6-8 seed - see the Timberwoves when the had Garnett) and it will generally result in some down years when the star gives out (see the Bucks and Michael Redd's maxed out deal) but it's the best they can hope for.

The Spurs were up there for a decade because they had David Robinson who got seriously hurt, and they shelved him for a year, tanked and wound up with Tim Duncan. Success breeds success. Guys want to play where they have a hope of winning. You pull the trigger on that deal and you've effectively tied management's hands at the Hornets. It's a dumb deal in every conceivable way from a prospective buyers point of view.

If I were Orlando I wouldn't be dealing Howard unless I got fair price...

They're in pretty much the perfect position (no state taxes) to build through Free Agency... it's how they've pulled so many in the past.

Problem with trading Howard is if he's only gonna sign with one of the teams he wants to play for, anybody trading for him that isn't one of those select teams is just renting him. So, what's the point? Cap room? Cap room to use to go after big name players who aren't gonna go there anyway. Maybe Boston would be willing to trade a bunch of players for him just to take him on for a year and then when he leaves, get a huge amount of Cap space to start rebuilding.

Howard has to approve any deal, so he has control...he can just turn down deal after deal, play the season, then just leave, and Orlando will get nothing. So if Orlando is smart, they would let him go where he please and try to get something....like Bynum and a pick.

Chauncey Billups Doesn't Care About Your Amnesty Waiver Wire
He wants the freedom of free agency to choose a contender, Billups says. As one of the game’s great leaders, and gentlemen, Billups warns that player will be a distant memory should a team claim him off the amnesty waiver wire.

“I’ m tired of being the good guy,” Billups told Yahoo! Sports by phone on Saturday afternoon. “I’m tired of being viewed as the guy. After a while, you just kind of get taken advantage of in these situations. I’ve been known as a leader, and I am a leader, but a leader can be as disruptive as he can be productive, especially when you carry a strong voice and people rally around you. This is about me now. This is about me, and teams should know that right now.”

Yeah, Chauncey's pissed.

Also, if I got drafted by the Blazers, I'd go ahead and retire right now. That team is cursed. :o

I'd rather have Lopez and the 2 first rounders (plus dumping Hiedo's salary) that the Nets are offering them.

I'd rather lose him to free agency. The pick would be just about worthless, Bynum expires the same year and just like Howard I'd probably lose him in free agency (since he likely would want more than he's worth).

Howard's contract comes off and I've at least had him playing in my city for a year rather than watching Bynum get hurt and play like Bynum when he's not...

Nothing in that deal. Rather have the cap space once Howard expires and goes elsewhere and get the extra year from him now.

If I could off-load Hedo's contract, I probably would too.

Sounds a hell of a lot better than Bynum and a pick, which is downright insulting.

I would imagine the Nyets would amnesty Travis Outlaw and take Ball as part of the deal, along with the couple of outgoing 1st rounders.

I marvel at how Bynum is continually referenced as a beast when he can barely get on the court. The "if/when he's healthy" line is just stale.

He is still a precious commodity to have in a league with very few skilled 7+ footers.

Any argument for him as being the second best centre is ridiculous, if only because his inclusion in the argument means you have to include Bogut as well.

Dude will be an allstar if he can stay healthy for a whole year, but he keeps getting hurt just at that time.

Then there's his inconsistent attitude towards rebounding and just general effort.

I'd say he's top 5 when healthy and a bad contract because he seldom is.

A 7 footer is still only inches tall when he's laid out flat as Bynum frequently is.

The Celtics, Bulls and Clippers are expected to aggressively pursue Dwight Howard, who has requested a trade from the Magic.

Orlando has given Howard's agent Dan Fegan permission to speak to the Nets, Mavericks and Lakers about Howard.

Howard is eligible to become a free agent in 2012 and while the Magic haven't given up on retaining him, they do not want to lose him without compensation in return.
