2012: A Monster Year? (box office predictions) - Part 5

the funny part is too on most of these movies they look fake and crappy while smaller movies like district 9 look like $200 million dollar movies cinematically and effects wise.

It's because there were weapons and aliens CGI'd, but no big building or other stuff other than the Spaceship.

also steaks catered by ruth chris steakhouse, lobster tails, steamed crabs flown in from maryland with some old bay and deserts flown in from italy. I always think of that scene from tropic thunder where the crew is partying and eating and drinking exotic foods after one week of shooting being completed haha.

Man I wish I was an actor

Sometimes it's not even the effects. That movie That's My Boy costs 70 mill to make. Cmon 70 mill for a non action comedy?

True, sometimes I would really like to be in the meetings when studios plan out a movie and just hear what there cost go towards. Adam sandler must have had a nice trailer on the back lot. I cant imagine a studio would have gave him that much of a budget after jack and jill bombed unless that my boy was almost done production. I cant imagine sandler getting big budgets going foward, thats 2 bombs in a row for him.

true, but I mean they achieved more with that movie than most big budgets have. I cant imagine how much the star wars prequel would have cost if they were being made now or the hype phantom menace had but in 3D as well.

I think the first class sequel will do much better business and I think the change up might have a life post theatrical run. Every one I mostly talk too have seen it on bluray/ hbo etc. and they all loved it so maybe the marketing was wrong last summer.

That Glee 3D concert deserves a much more horrible death. Im a fan of the show and that movie was an insult to my intelliegence.

Crazy, Stupid, Love.
Im pretty sure Crazy Stupid Love, First Class and Spy Kids did pretty well

First Class had horrible buzz pretty much right up to the week of release and was missing the franchise's one bankable star. I'm surprised it did as well as it did, but the sequel should do better. After the last two films in the franchise, First Class was the cinematic equivalent of replotting a field before planting the crops. It was about saving the brand.

Yeah, I wouldn't call $84 million dollar domestic and $142 million worldwide on a $50 million budget disappointing.

On another note: I loved that movie. One of my favorite romcoms of all time

Same here. That, 500 Days of Summer, and Definitely, Maybe are mine.

The marketing costs wipe out the profit it had plus it had Carell, Gosling and other big stars in it so it's a disappointment.

Same deal with X-Men, the marketing costs swallowed the money it earned after production costs. Cable TV and BluRay will push it into the black. As a theatrical release it was a disappointment.

I'll give you that Spy Kids probably broke even or made a small profit. That was a mistake, I'll remove it. However based on the previous trilogy it was a huge disappointment.

Yeah, that is a great movie. Up there with my other favorite romcoms of When Harry Met Sally and Love, Actually. A solid movie.

What were the marketing costs for Crazy. Stupid. Love. I cant imagine that it would be so much that 142 mill would be a disappointment

I dont know what are my favorites but I know CSL, Love, Actually, Annie Hall and 500 Day are all the ones that I actually watch multiple times

len wiseman's last movie was live free or die hard and that actually made some money but not alot and that had bruce willis for god sakes and a alot smaller budget.

Live free or die hard
Production Budget: $110 million

Domestic: $134,529,403 35.1%+ Foreign: $249,002,061 64.9%= Worldwide: $383,531,464

To be fair, 2007 was intense. The film did pretty well considering the tough competition. Also, keep in mind that Die Hard 4 was released on the same exact weekend as Pixar's Ratatouille and only four days prior to the first Transformers.

I don't know, it's not like Crazy, Stupid love had that huge a marketing a marketing campaign, even if you go by the usual half the production budget, it still made a profit.

I like When Harry Met Sally also. I still need to watch Love, Actually.

Total Recall is tracking at $30M. That feels off. It will be a tight weekend but I imagine The Dark Knight Rises wins again.

Boxoffice.com is predicting $37,5 million for TDKR this weekend and only $23 million for Total Recall

Did you guys see the trailer for Celeste and Jesse Forever?
It actually looks like it'll be in the same mold of 500 Days and Crazy Stupid Love with the whole "romantic break up comedy-drama"

Actually opens this weekend and already has an 80% on RT

Damn shame. It looks really good to me

What were the marketing costs for Crazy. Stupid. Love. I cant imagine that it would be so much that 142 mill would be a disappointment.

With inflation $142 isn't that much compared to films from just 8-10 years ago let alone 20 years ago when Harry Met Sally did $92 domestic.

That $142 is split with the studio and theater chains so that comes to $71 million for the studio, though likely a smaller number because foreign countries limit what can leave their country. They spent $50 million on the budget, that leaves $21 million. Now I don't have the exact number for their budget as studios like to keep that quiet because they use creative accounting to limit who they can pay. Captain America had a $40 million marketing budget so a $24-25 million marketing budget seems fair for a romantic comedy released by Warner Bros. in July. It opened 4th up against The Smurfs and Cowboys & Aliens.

Am I the only one who thought total recall needed a reboot? has anyone seen the original lately, it does not hold up well at all. I hope it does well and makes some cash and since Ive relogated myself to realizing TDKR isnt doing dark knight numbers we might as well end summer with some big numbers.

I actually saw the original for the first time a few months ago. I actually thought it held up fine besides some of the SFX of course.
BUt I didnt mind the idea of a reboot

Total Recall isn't a classic, so I'm not up in arms about it the way I would be about something like a Jaws remake. But it is a goofy, 80s style science fiction film that I just don't think can work in today's environment. Would I be wrong to assume that they've sanitized the new version to get a PG-13 rating instead of the R rating it needs to make it work?

Regardless of whether the remake had potential or not, spending 200 million was insane.
