24: Live Another Day - Part 2

@Tony, the ratings overall have been strong, but with different platforms over a 30 day period, it's actually quite a big hit, ie a breakdown after episode 3 of the ratings: (source: 24spoilers)

Live+SD: The live + same day DVR ratings for the third episode were 8.3 million viewers. These are people who watched between the air time of 9:00pm and 3:00am when the numbers get sent to Nielsen for processing.
Live+7: The Live+7 ratings measure live viewing plus DVR viewing up to seven days later. The total audience for this was 11.7 million meaning another 3.4 million people caught up from their DVR during the first week.
Encores: An additional 2.1 million viewers watched the episode via the encore airing that Friday.
VOD and Streaming: lastly is video on demand and streaming services such as Hulu and Fox.com which added another 1.7 million viewers to the tally.

Altogether it adds up to a much more impressive 15.6 million total viewers which is a massive +87% increase from the initial ratings. This means 24 is the second most popular show on FOX after American Idol (the Idol season finale delivered 17.8 million viewers that week).

For comparison, at the absolute peak of 24‘s popularity, the heavily promoted and critically acclaimed fifth season premiered to 17.01 million viewers and averaged 13.78 million viewers throughout. Back then in early 2006, DVR usage was only an insignificant 1.6% and streaming services like Hulu didn’t even exist.

Lots of people just aren't watching it live, and as said recently on Twitter, it seems the Nielsen ratings fail to account for quite a noticeable percentage of people watching shows on different platforms, advertisers need to rethink their strategy.

That finale really hit me and the family like a ton of bricks. You'd think we'd be used to this after nine seasons, but man was it depressing (a really awesome depressing though). I just hope this isn't the end. Thats what made it realky depressing. Not knowing if we'll get more.

I think that this is a great way to end the show. What else is left? Live Another Day..Yet again? Bauer yet again held and tortured in yet another prison? The Russian guy said that the Russians will never stop coming after him, so no matter what, that story wouldn't be resolved unless Bauer was in their custody. Anything else would be a repeat of what happened with Jack being released by the Chinese. The only possible comeback after that finale is if the Russians make Jack run covert operations for them..other than that, he's going to answer for his crimes…because who else was that last silent clock for?

Oh btw, i wonder what happens to Chloe as far as the crimes she's been accused of..?

That's actually a REALLY good idea. Even they must realize Jack is too valuable an asset to just get rid of. They may as well put him to use.

As much as I want to see one more 12 part series I just don't see where it would go. I think one of the reasons this season was so good was because of the long break we've had without any Jack Bauer. I don't see what else they have to tell. The only two shocking things that could happen at this point is the death of either Chole, his daughter or Jack, himself. There is literally no one else, even in the White House who can help Jack at this point. As people have pointed out, he's done everything. His family is safe and his best friend. I think the silent clock was a good indicator that we won't be seeing Jack on TV again. Maybe a movie.

The silent clock has been used plenty of times & not always to signify deaths.

The idea with the russians is a good one and probably where they'd go if there's another season. Cassar said (although he could be lying, like they all do) that right now there's no plan for it at this moment as they're all recuperating, but I doubt they'd have thrown a 24 panel at SDCC just for the kicks.

More to come is my guess.

I think the saddest part about this ep was Heller's speech to the Prime Minister about not remembering anything.:(

Remind me...:yay:

According to an interview with Manny Cotto, the idea he had was that the Russians really do need Jack. Probably for some covert operation.

What faction of the Russians were actually working with Cheung; was it the official Russian government or a rogue section? Because if they were official, i would think that the U.S and U.K would have a major issue with them aiding Cheung it almost starting a war. I remember them mentioning that Russia would benefit the most from a war between the U.S and China. Looks like Russia may have broken a host of international laws if that's the case….

If we are getting another season, this could give the U.S the leverage to get Bauer back and keep Russia off his back permanently.

the question is against the US or what?

hopefully not and probably not... that guy that transported Jack at the end in the helicopter told Jack that he'd be lying if he said that he'd enjoy Moscow...

I don't think the US government will get Bauer back..........I don't see the VP who take over for Heller doing any diplomacy at all. The situation is quite different from the China one. The US govenment do not owe Jack which I think they see in their POV. Even though Jack help avoided WWIII. The US government might still consider Jack a fugitive and he only get protection because of his connection with Heller instead of going to prison.

We have no idea who in Russia is involve but wouldn't surprise me if it a was a rouge element or sanction by the Russian President.

What happened to the "device" that was central to this whole season?

I don't recall anyone telling Jack to be sure and retrieve it from Cheng.

Am I not remembering something? -- did the Chinese bad guys destroy it after sending the launch order to the sub??

They still had it on the cargo ship. I'm sure it's back in US hands now.

So you're speculating -- you never heard it mentioned, either.

You'd think maybe the Chinese President would want proof that such a diabolical thing existed, in order to corroborate Heller's assertions.

really, what DID happen to the device?... as far as I recall, it never WAS brought up again at the end... I guess we're supposed to assume it was recovered, but that IS pretty sloppy to have not mentioned it at all...

I totally missed that... guess Audrey's death and Jack turning himself in to the Russians kinda drew my attention away...

or did I miss something, as well?

do anyone think the producer will submit the show for best drama? Kiefer for best actor, William Devane for best supporting actor.......they would probably do this for the golden globes

Oh man...what a super dark ending. Especially the scene with Heller...taking joy in the fact that he won't remember his daughter...damn.

There is a certain irony in Audrey's death, in the sense that it was ultimately her father who caused it. Season six ended with Heller telling Jack to stay away from Audrey, because Jack would get her killed. Yet she went in the field for her father, as a member of his administration, speaking for him. She was in London because of him. The events were set in motion for revenge against him. Everything came back to Heller. He ultimately brought about Audrey's death...not Jack. And I feel like he sort of knew it. Damn....such a dark, sad ending.

Also, how great was Keifer's acting? The pain when he heard about Audrey...out of this world. It was very reminiscent of Terri's death. Then the way he pulled himself together and channeled it into rage...amazing.

I really hope Fox does another mini-series event. "There is no where left for Jack to go?" Bull ****. That is why writers are creative. Jack deserves his happy ending. He deserves to go home and be with Kim and little Terri. I want to see the story that gets him there.

My final thought on what has been a fantastic season.....why the hell was there a samurai sword on a Russian cargo ship? :funny:

Kiefer deserves one every season, say what you like about the show but he brings his A game every episode to the point where you almost dont notice and it doesn't seem special. When you actually concentrate on his performance it's outstanding.

Cause it's a Bauer moment so badass you just don't care. Like the cleaver early on in the episode, if that was Kate you'd roll your eyes but as it's Jack it's badass. Same with the thing in the first season where he threatens to shove a cloth down someones throat and wait for his stomach to digest it, makes no sense what so ever but you're still like "badass". :D

If this is submitted as a drama, it will probably go overlooked. If it is submitted as a mini-series, it will undoubtedly get several nominations and maybe even win a couple.

:funny: Very true.

I think they will submit 24 LAD as best outstanding drama......since it could be the final season......the producer will likely do it, but I don't think it win.

I have a good feeling William Devane could win best supporting actor since Cherry Jones won in season 7 so maybe it will happen once again like with Kiefer for season 5
