Just how many B.O. bucks can Warner Bros.' stylized battle pic "300" pillage this weekend?

Based on a graphic novel by Frank Miller, pic has certainly galvanized Internet fanboys, and Miller began a solid track record with his previous pic "Sin City," (April's biggest ever R-rated opening at $29.1 million).

But "300" also has, somehow, piqued the interest of the intelligentsia: New York Times ran a news piece this week debating whether the latest project by "Dawn of the Dead" helmer Zack Snyder subtextually critiques -- or kowtows to -- American foreign policies under the Bush administration.

Based on such wide-ranging reactions, the bloody, R-rated pic, which depicts the ancient Battle of Thermopylae, has the potential to cross over from the Miller faithful.

Also in "300's" favor this weekend is that the pic has the multiplex battlefield largely to itself as the frame's only new wide release, in just over 3,100 theaters.

Fandango, the online ticket service, was reporting Thursday that 92% of its advance orders for the weekend were for "300." Site also said Imax shows for "300" were selling out particularly fast, and that three theaters in California were adding 2:30 a.m. screenings as a result.

Miller has a cult following that certainly knows its way around cyberspace, and Internet chatter on the pic has been high.

Then again, pics with Internet buzz have met with mixed results over the past year as New Line's "Snakes on a Plane" slithered into obscurity, but Fox's "Borat" hit socko returns.

People close to Warners said the studio is looking for a debut in the $30 million-plus range, but B.O. pundits are speculating that the pic -- made in conjunction with Legendary Pictures and Virtual Studios -- could hit loftier heights.

Biggest ever R-rated opener in March was "Scream 3," which cut up $34.7 million in 2000.

Studio is going day-and-date in just five territories with "300," including, appropriately, Greece, as well as the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan.

Pic will launch next weekend in its first major market in South Korea, then expand significantly over the March 23 frame to France, Holland, Italy, Mexico and the U.K.

the "R" rating taken into consideration and the fact that every IMAX everywhere sold out all weekend from ONLINE sales alone!!! And the new trailers are trying to make it look like a gladiator to get the more MILD consumers!!!! hmmm

71.2 MILLION opening week when IMAX is added in
180 MILLION total domestic run
210 MILLION overseas

I am an optimist... i dont mind being wrong!

I got the same "vibe" for this movie as I did for X3. X3 proved to have a huge opening and then died out because it was dissapointing. But this movie...I think it will have a huge (not X3 huge) opening and the difference is that it won't dissapoint. On a larger scope, the only thing really hurting its box-office take at this point is its rating of course...and its not Summer nor is it a holiday weekend. If websites are betting safe as if they actually are betting money on the opening...then I understand the low predictions...but my gut tells me its gonna blow those expectations away...50-60 OW sounds about right to me.

"died out"? X3 made the most money out of the entire trilogy.

I meant that...it sufferred some very large drops...and a movie that opens with a hundred million...should have finished with about 250-300m. I know it made more then the others...but X2 mad 50m more than X1...X3 made 20m more than X2...by most analyst's logic it should have made another 50m more than the previous...especially with the buzz and hype that one had going for it. Anyway...back on topic...naysayers said X3 would open to what sites were predicting with 75m and it opened even bigger than that...people are saying 300 will only open with and finish with SinCity, Constantine, and V numbers...I say much higher. The appeal...the anticipation, and so far...the early reactions...are all living up to the hype...for a change.

This will make a lot of money i'm sure...the marketing for this movie has been fanstastic. :yay:

I predict it to be in the range of 20 to 30 million for the opening weekend. But I won't be surprised if it makes more -- the trailer for the movie looks really cool. I can't imagine it making less than 15 millon and not be number 1 at the box office this weekend.

oops read this wrong I thought it said Box Office Projection for the entire run for opening weekend I will say 30 to 40 million

Not to mention its a kick ass movie, Very well done. Loved it.

300 will no doubtly finish #1 this weekend with between 30-40 million.

I hope it makes between 40-50, but I just dont quite see it doing it.

I haven't seen it yet but 3 midnight shows at the Irvine Spectrum were sold out with lines for each showing building up at 8:00 PM or sooner. When I came out of the theatre at 10PM the lines were enormous for this film. For a rated R film this is pretty impressive. It'd gonna make 25-30 million on Friday including midnight showings. I voted 40-50 million accidently I honeslty think this one has a chance of busting 60 million in 3 days judging from the lines outside.

That's my best guess. 60 million.

^ Well the lines were way bigger than Ghost Rider which made 52 million in 4 days. I mean way bigger and Ghost Rider didn't have midnight showings like 300 does. It should easily surpass GR's 45 million judging by the lines I saw and I know people who went to midnight showings at other theatres. It wasn't nearly as long as Spidey 2 lines about 1/3rd of that.

Well I'm sure it will beat wild hogs weekend gross. Hahaha I'm shooting for 40-50 Million.

still no reporting on Midnight shows...I guess it didn't make that big of a splash lastnight or the media would have reported it by now.

I'm a little iffy on this movie's numbers. On the one hand it seems like it's got good enough hype to do 40mil but I could easily see it turning into another VFV. That movie had lots of Hype and better reviews and still only did 26mil. I'm going to go with 35mil with the usual bad legs that don't get it too 100mil.

It doesn't look hugely appealing to me so thats why this is my first post in this thread.

I'm gonna say about 45 million. The R rating the only thing keeping it from 60 million plus.

It was VERY crowded though. I saw it at 11 am this morning and it was playing on 3(of the 4) big screens in the Amc 24 plex. And I think it was playing on a couple more of the smaller screens too. And it was packed. 500 seater that was about halfway full which is ginormous for a Friday morning show that isn't Spider-man or Shrek or something.

How was the movie? Good but not great. 8.5/10

I see what your saying, but the things they can do in an R rating is what's got people pumped to see it.

Early box office reports have this film at 30 million dollars from yesterday alone. This film is now tracking to have the third largest opening weekend of an R-rated film ever, behind only The Matrix Reloaded and Passion of the Christ.

60-70 million is estimated for it's opening weekend; an astounding amount for an R-rated film.

Not bad at all & I can not remember the last time a movie that was pretty much universally loved by most that saw it :ninja:

Oh, I'm sure the negative people will chime in here over the next couple days to make it sound like more people hated it than liked it.

I think it's great that the box office sounds like it slapped Ghost Riders record into the dirt. 30 million in one day?
