It ruins the excitement I felt hearing Gordan's 'escalation' speech and the Joker's 'you've changed things' or the line 'we're destined to do this forever'. They set the mind racing about the villians that all lay ahead for Batman. Turns out there's only a couple more.

I was thinking retired until you said that. What's the point in making a big deal about those lines in the movie if it just follows with him taking an eight year sabbatical? Kind of a downer, huh? Like hinting to your kids you'll have kobe beef for the rest of your life and eating Ramen for the next eight years.

This Batman and Gotham experience a lifetime's worth of struggle and change in just a few years...not an ongoing episodic thing. I think it works great.

I'd love to imagine it... and it would have to be significantly longer. Can't have Heaths Joker and Hardys Bane in the same movie. one would get shafted and the fans would flip.

Well Joker could have had a smaller role since he was the focus in DK. Maybe Bane's thugs could have him locked up or something lol.

I just felt from the beginning...even right after TDK came out...that some sort of break/time off would have been cool to sort of mirror the DKR comic and set up a big return as a final chapter. I didn't think they'd go as far as to put him in his 50's or so, but I was pleasantly surprised when I heard about the 8 years. I was hoping that he'd go fro something rather bold and I'm glad he did.

It is extremely bold, and I'm pretty psyched. I'm no longer worried but rather optimistic and can't wait to see Nolan's approach for his conclusion.

Wow, those pics are cool. It's too sad to think what would have happened if Heath hadn't passed. No doubt we would have gotten at least a Joker cameo.

Anyway, as far as the topic, I think the several years gap from being Batman is pretty great idea to start with.

And I thought the meeting between a freshly scarred Two-Face and Joker in a nurses uniform was something else, I could only imagine how intense a Bane Vs Joker meeting would be.

Yeah, dictatorship like control versus all out chaos. Bane is a very tough fellow and obviously stronger physically, but I still think The Joker would have a chance at Bane. If he got thrown around he'd still laugh it off, and Joker usually finds some off the cuff solution while his mind is racing in the moment.

Joker is basically Batman with a twisted mind and more colorful. He would use strategy and his gadgets to fight Bane.

Me: Guess what. Batman retires for 8 years but comes back because of Bane.

Friend: What? That's absurd! You don't retire from being Batman. This is not some 9-5 job that you just quit one day because the boss is an *******. It's a pledge, it's a promise, it's a lifestyle dedicated to uproot and destroy the criminal elements of Gotham. If Nolan is so dedicated to realism then he must realize that crime isn't just going to lie down because poor wickle Batman is not feeling well and just can't Batman anymore. Ra'z Al Ghul, Scarecrow, Zazaz, Maroni Family, Gambol Family and the prince himself, Joker all in the span of two to three years. So what happens during those 8 years? Just petty thefts and jaywalking? Forget major villains, surely serial killers and rapists still exist. Bruce Wayne became Batman because he wants to avenge the deaths of his parents and doesn't want anyone going through the trauma he did. So what, he just forgets all that because the cops are after him for (NOT) killing Dent? He doesn't even want to be Bruce anymore, he would rather be Batman 100% of the time because he's obsessed with this monster of his like Alfred said. Batman may die but he doesn't retire.

Because a four story fall and a nearly point blank gunshot to the belly aren't serious?! I bet he shattered his femur and suffered major intestinal damage. For all we know that bullet could have ricocheted to his spine.

Not to mention that having lost his will Bruce likely hasn't been training.

Joker couldn't possible match him in a fight...but he'd put laughing gas in Bane's mask, which would make him at least listen.

I think this is what bothered me the most about the film.

It seemed out of character for Batman to go into hiding; what happened to his vow?

When I heard about the eight years, which was really the only information I had going into the movie, I hoped that I would see an experienced, established Batman who had eight years worth of adventures under his belt. I also expected a fully functioning Batcave - it seemed like the "improvements" to the south-east foundation were barely noticeable.

It would have made Bane even more intimidating of a foe if Batman was fully-functioning, instead of coming out of retirement.

Yeah, I kinda wished he was out for a few years (maybe the last two years because of the anti-batman sentiment finally got to him), but at least be active for a bit after TDK.

The whole point, I thought, of Bruce being the The Dark Knight at the end of that movie is increased his freedom to strike fear. Criminals will now believe he's willing to kill (even though he truly does not), making him intimidating again.

Bruce is still injured from the fall in TDK. Also he's been a recluse and hasn't donned the costume since that night. I makes perfect sense because the police still want to capture him and Batman isn't needed to keep Gotham safe.

well he ran away from the scene at the end of TDK. he wasn't limping or anything. and in 8 years, he hasn't healed? or gone to a hospital? i feel like that was sloppy. i understand the 'not needing to be Batman' thing, though.

And even with no cartilage and bad bones, it took him like a dat to get back into the swig of thing in the suit and be able to beat up lots bad guys.
