They literally didn't deserve it. Beats of No Nation literally did and no one saw it.

Would you care to elaborate? I get that this is all opinions, but I'm intrigued as to why you feel that way. Because I'd definitely place them on my Top 10 list for 2015.

Creed and Jordan where good, not spectacular best of the year good. But how many times can you force a boxer to work as an inspirational figure?

SOC, making certain omissions to make it's characters look better felt dishonest.

Where's Sam Jackson for Hateful Eight? Beasts of No Nation, Ebla, Cary Fugunaka? The aforementioned Benicio Del Toro is a huge snub too.

ETA: Spectre is one of my favourite movies of the year and I'd be an idiot to think it was snubbed in any way, shape or form. Also, I'm not accusing anyone here of this, but my facebook feed is full of white people crying racism, when I know them as people for a fact are entirely insincere about it.

They may or may not have deserved Best Picture noms, but do you really believe they deserved nothing?

Compared to Fury Road, The Martian, Sicario, The Revenant, Beasts of No Nation, Spotlight, Hateful 8 and Bridge of Spies? Nope.

I wonder if BoNN was too brutal for the voters? I like it but it was a hard watch for me especially certain scenes.

I think so. Very much a case of "Ignore it and it will go away" I think. Elba's character [BLACKOUT]molesting the child[/BLACKOUT] probably killed his Oscar chances.

If they even get to that part. I ALMOST had to turn it off during the [BLACKOUT]child stomping scene[/BLACKOUT]. Beautiful but very hard film to watch. And you just know that there are people who find it hard to separate characters from the actors that portray them. How many times have you heard people say how much they hated (insert ACTOR/ACTRESS) because he/she did (insert ACTIONS CHARACTER that ACTOR portrayed did).

Adam Driver's probably already getting death threats.

I think Driver's death threats are more pleasant. Not just "I'm gonna ****ing kill you." More like, "I'm gonna take your mother out to a nice sushi dinner and then I'm gonna ****ing kill you."

I absolutely agree about Creed and Straight Out Of Compton not deserving any recognition. They were fine films, but some of the best films of the year? Please. Besides, how often do the Oscars celebrate a blockbuster sequel like Creed? Fury Road is the exception because it's too good to ignore.

If we're going to talk about the Oscars being too white, Idris Elba, who clearly was snubbed for politics regarding the industry not wanting to embrace Netflix, and Samuel L Jackson were legitimately snubbed. If Christoph Waltz played basically the same character as SLJ in a Tarantino film, you bet your ass he'd be nominated and if BONN had a traditional release, you bet Ilba would have one as well. However, Creed was about as generic as it gets(it did what it did well, but it wasn't reinventing the wheel) and Straight Outta Compton side-stepped the band's issues and played it way too clean to show legitimate depth.

I think your probably right about Elba being snubbed because his film was a Netflix release and the voters are traditional Hollywood types that don't want to give recognition to the likes of Netflix.
Looks like Bale has gone from the guy who never gets nominated to the guy puzzlingly racking up noms in one stride.
Bale is the new Bradley Cooper :o
Adam Driver's probably already getting death threats.

Malcolm McDowell got death threats for years for killing Captain Kirk.

Well, Adam Driver's hosting Saturday Night Live tomorrow night, maybe he can get back on the fans' good side...

I've yet to see many of the nominated movies/performances as they haven't been released in Australia yet, but I'm super happy for the Mad Max nods.

Oh and Best Costume for Cinderella - those clothes were absolutely divine :ilv:

You gotta love the Internet. Looking at comments over at Deadline and they're filled with people insisting that anyone who suggests there may be discrepancies in the nominees racial divide is a racist who wants race to be chosen over talent :whatever:

So Adam McKay, the man that is responsible for notable comedic lines such as "Boats and Hoes" and "60% of the time it works every time" got an Oscar Nomination?

The Big Short must be a fantastic movie.

Deadline's comment sections are a nightmare. Full of trolls, studio plants, and idiots.

It is an ok movie with some solid performances but I don't think it is spectacular.

It is a bunch of people in the financial crisis going around being amazed at how corrupt/stupid/immoral the financial industry, system and the people that work in it are for about 2 hours. The film is edited together with achieve footage and celebrity cameos used to explain financial industries jargon/schemes.

The movie is equivalent of those John Oliver Last Week Tonight segments in which he gets famous actors to give comedic informative scenes about whatever topic he is covering that week.

Eh, if it had the same marketing campaign as something like 12 Years a Slave did, we'd get Will Smith once again proudly declaring best picture/director and whatnot again. ;)

I'm still confused how hateful 8 got nominated for best supporting actress.

Because Jennifer Jason Leigh did a fantastic job on playing an awful human being.

I was really pleased to see her nominated. Didn't expect that at all.

I know everyone is pulling for DiCaprio to win Best Actor, but his performance at times felt desperate. No question it was a good performance, but I'm pulling for Cranston. If you watch interviews with the real Dalton Trumbo you'll see just how much Cranston embodied that man. He was perfect. I may be a bit biased, though. Trumbo was my favorite film of 2015.

OK, after seeing some more movies my personal breakdown is as follows on who I think should win and who the potential runners up are as well as nominees that I think shouldn't be in there at all ans snubs who should have been there. All just my personal opinion but that's what these type of forums are for. With that said here goes:

Best Picture-

I only saw 6 of the 8 nominees and I will not be seeing the remaining two since as far as I am concerned they have failed the most important test a movie needs to pass: The make me give a ***k test. Room and Brooklyn didn't and that's all I have to say about them.

Of the 6 that remain I'd have to go with Spotlight as my favorite with The Martian as runner up. I have no issue with The Big Short, Bridge of Spies or The Revenant being in this category as I enjoyed all of them to varying degrees. And IMO Mad Max has no business being in this category at all as I did not like that movie at all. IMO Creed was snubbed big time by not being in this category and should have got MM:FR's spot. And since AoU is still my favorite movie of the year I personally would have put it in here as well and probably bumped one of the 3: Big Short, Revenant or Bridge of Spies(all about the same level of quality) if we couldn't have a 9th BP nominee. But the Academy having the biases it has I'm not surprised AoU is left off the list in any way and in fact fully expected it. But Creed would have been less distasteful to their sensibilities so I feel it should have been on there. Anyway, moving on..

Best Director-

Obviously can't comment on Lenny Abrahamson for Room. George Miller you gotta be kidding me. Doesn't belong here. Coogler was snubbed for Creed as was Scott for The Martian. McCarthy is my pick to win. Adam McKay is my runner up.

Best Actor-

Since Steve Jobs and The Danish Girl also failed my 'make me give a ***k test' I'll not comment on them.

So of the remaining: Leo takes this completely. Matt Damon is runner up. Cranston IMO shouldn't have been nominated. Hanks and Michael B. Jordan gave better performances than him in Bridge of Spies and Creed respectively so they were snubbed. I liked Trumbo and I love Cranston but his performance in that movie while solid was rather unremarkable by comparison, IMO.

Best Supporting Actor-

Favorite goes to Sly. Tom Hardy is runner up. I have no issues with Ruffalo or Rylance. Bale shouldn't be there, Steve Carrell should be in his place. Probably Michael Keaton as well. They both out did Bale this year, IMO. Those 2 are my snubs.

Best Actress-

I didn't see any of the movies that these actresses are nominated for as they all failed my give a ***k test so I won't comment on them. Emily Blunt is pretty much the only actress I saw all year who could legitimately qualify for this category in Sicario. But without anyone else to pit her against it feels worthless for me to say she should be nominated. And I liked Sicario and thought she gave a very good performance there but contrast is needed. I'll call her my snub for this category. Best I can do.

Best Supporting Actress-

Only 2 of the nominees can I comment on as the rest failed my test so I'll ignore them. IMO this is the closest category but since both were good performances yet one film was so head and shoulders better than the other I'll have to go for McAdams on this one. I can't think of any snubs here. Maybe Diane Lane in Trumbo...she was very good there. But nothing I'm committed to. Jennifer Jason Leigh is by default my runner up.

Best Original Screenplay-

Gotta go with Spotlight as favorite and Bridge of Spies as runner up. Ex Machina...don't make me laugh. Creed was snubbed.

Best Adapted Screenplay-

The Big Short is favored with The Martian as runner up. Didn't see the others. No snubs that I can see.

Best Animated Film-

The only one of these I saw was Inside Out and the rest failed my test. So I gotta go with that even though I only liked it but did not love it. Peanuts got snubbed completely though.

Best Original Score-

Bridge of Spies is my pick of those nominated. Either The Hateful Eight or Sicario would work equally well as runners up. Didn't see Carol. Star Wars IMO shouldn't be here. Not sure about snubs...maybe Creed.

The rest of the categories I really have very little to say about so I'll skip them and stop here.

And that's my layman's take on the 88th Academy Awards nominees thus far.
