9.19 - Charade - Discussion Thread (Spoilers)

did anybody see the preview during tonight's episode? I didn't and was afraid next week would be a rerun.

EDIT: Judging from the preview, this episode will kick ass!

For whatever reason the CW felt putting a 90210 preview at the end of Smallville was a good idea. It definantly is on next week though(it should be noted the preview clip seems to be for the next 2 episodes)

Charade looks like it is going to be an awesome episode

yea it was screwy no promo during closing credits, goofballs at cw probably screwed up with the promos. But saw it online looks good.

yeah I didn't see a trailer either. I got some high hopes for this episode!

Good webclip. I'm looking forward to this episode!

yea i cant wait for friday myself. I hope lord is a good villain.

Well tonight was the 19th episode of the season entitled "Charade" Written by Holly Henderson & Don Whitehead and directed by Brian Peterson. Also the episode featured the introduction of dc comics characters maxwell lord, and franklin stern.

I thought it was a pretty good epiode tonight. Holly and don wrote a solid episode tonight i think. Plus being brian's first time at the helm i thought he did well. The plot with lois and clark competting to get a story on sacks release and max lord/sacks trying to learn the blur's identity was pretty nice too.

I some times dont like the flashback to an earlier point episodes. But it worked out very well tonight i think compared to some past episodes who use this technique. The opening teaser at the club was pretty fun start.

As for the whole plot about lois and clark going to have a date to be fully open to each other was nice. But of course due to the events of the episodes things dont go as planned. I loved the save clark did on lois in the alley, and the rooftop reveal was pretty sweet, i loved how the blur and the s shield looked there.

Then we learn sacks is working with max lord to reveal who the blur was. And they take lois and some criminals and the guy who took the blur photo to find his identity. That was pretty neat looking set up lab he had there.

Also i liked how they decided to have him have powers, i believe in certain comics he did have mind reading powers or something. So its nice they decided to have him be a metahuman. And we know he is working on a different agenda then amanda waller.

The blur scene at the lab with lord was pretty wicked. I enjoyed thier chat and loved how he saved lois. That was a wicked effect there. Also there was a nice touching scene between lois and the blur in the lab.

As for lord with him trying to escape we finally meet the mysterious red queen mentioned back in checkmate. Cant wait to see who is revealed to be her. Man i wonder who they are going to make it be?

The end lois and blur scene was also another touching scene. I felt so sad for lois and blur/clark. But he needed to do it to try and protect lois. Also nice he warned her not to believe any future phone calls. Also the end scene with lois and clark's date on the roof was nice. It sucks we didnt get to hear her answer.

As for the writers, as i said i think holly and don wrote a solid episode. It flowed nicely and i think each break was good. There was drama, and action and i enjoyed it all alot. So i glad they had a solid good episode at the end of the season. As for peterson's first time directing. I thought he put out a great first episode. Glad he had a good episode to start off on. I loved his camera angles and his movements too. Cant wait to see if he directs again next season.

Acting i thought was solid all around. All the main cast did very well tonight. I didnt think any one was weak at all. Their was alot of drama and all that.

Erica was very great tonight. I enjoyed how she played lois and she did great in the touching scenes with clark and the blur. Plus her scenes with sacks were good.

Allison was also pretty good tonight too, not in the episode much. But i thought she played her scenes well and showed concern for clark and lois.

Tom was also great tonight i think he played the blur and clark very well as always. I am enjoying how he plays clark and cant wait to see how the character turns out rest of the season.

Tess while didnt have much to do in the episode was solid in her scenes. And Sacks return the actor played him well. I wouldnt mind seeing him be a threat again in next season. Also the actor who played franklin stern was cool. I enjoyed how he played the character. He seem to be a nice and touching boss. I hope we get to see him return again in next season. OR if we dont get to see him for him to mentioned from time to time.

All in all a great episode tonight. Also i do hope lois and clark get back to the planet soon enough. I dont want to see them gone for to long there.

I hope we did well in ratings tonight. Since we are preempted again in certain markets. I am hoping we can at least score a 2million rating tonight. Also promo for next week looks great. Cant wait to see how that episode turns out. Looks to be a good one.

I find it interesting how this season has abandoned the convention of having each season cover a year in the characters lives. Instead, this season started in September 2009, but is now set probably in 2011.

In the last episode, Zod said Clark had known him for almost a year, and this episode revealed Sacks was in jail for 8 months.

That means around a year has passed between Episode 7 ("Kandor") and Episode 17 ("Upgrade"), and at least 8 months (probably longer, given how long going to court takes) between Episode 8 ("Idol") and Episode 18 ("Charade").

So Clark is definitely around 24/25 years old.

umm every season spans pretty much a full years time usually. Yes we know it was late sept when season started and we are roughly somewhere between april/may period right now. ITs still probably same year, and with what zod said that he knew him for about a year is just a saying they known each other roughly for about a yr. Which still means only a matter of months.

Quality

Thought this entier episode was good, the odd looking shirt colors from the pictures seemed to only be for the purpose of making the \S/ stand out really vibrantly in the darkness.

With the route Smallville has taken with this 'Blur' persona before Superman, well to be honest I always think of it as a pile of pish. Mainly for the simple fact I think it just seems like something daft that has just been installed to carry the show on for longer & delay the actual Superman/tights.

However, after seeing Charade am I the only Superman comic fan that actually thinks if a bit more time & thought was put into it, this 'in the shadows/flyby helping people in dark clothes with an \S/' before an actual public reveal with a suit etc could have more potential than Smallville has given it? I mean would it have more potential in perhaps another story that isn't quite as messy/complicated with things like Lois knowing what Clark looks like/who he is pre-glasses, Kandorians running around etc etc..? Maybe it's just me.

When Lois was speaking the the reflection of the \S/ in the TV screen & she was firing questions at him about what she could call him, It would have been so fitting if he'd kinda whispered "Kal-El" under his voice, low enough so it doesn't actually sound like 'Clark' but high enough so Lois can hear him.

I have a stange feeling a flight scene is coming in a forthcoming episode.. either that or Clark getting tossed half way accross the city. They used 2 shots of a fully CGI Clark, one on the rooftop & one in that thing Maxwell Lord (who was also good) had rigged up to try & learn Clark's identity.. we'll see I've maybe jumped the gun, but I reckon it could be a sign of things to come. :D

Overall this was one of the better episodes of the season IMO, hopefully the last 3 won't be a letdown. The next one looks F-ing promising

Oh & I also LOVED the casual Superman Returns dig they threw in when Clark said he didn't want to use his powers to spy on Lois :D

6 kinds of awesome

Don't think you got my point.

This episode ("Charade") was likely set in 2011, because it's been a year in the story since Clone Jor-El died in Episode 7 (which itself was set months after the premiere).

The Red Queen's gotta be an entirely new character.

Those legs don't belong to Martha Kent.

i doubt a year has past from kandor and all that, since we know the whole season is about stoping the events that lead to the future saw in pandora and that was may, 2010. The show is still in 2010 i believe and its probably only april/may smallville time. As i said smallville usually plays a season is a yr long through the whole season. If there was such a big time jump we would have been privy to it. But all signs to me show its still 2010 and in april/mayish.

Jeeze, slow night or what! lol I thought "Charade" was pretty great! I just love Holly and Don's writing this year. They definately write Clois best as some scenes could have been Clana-level angst thrown in, but the dialogue was handled nicely and both Clark and Lois had good reasons for acting the way they did. Here is my breakdown:

The Good:

The acting-Tom adn Erica were great throughout their scenes as you really got a sense of how troubling the relationship between them is but how much they want to tell each the truth but can't.

Maxell Lord-For a cameo appearence, I enjoyed the character and he'll be making a return soon of course.

The Blur rescue-I just loved the sequence of Clark super-jumping away and then Lois watching him superspeed away on the roof. Very Superman-eqse, especially how the "S" shield looked.

The Glowing "S"-So beatifully done!

The Blur slamming Sacks against the wall and crushing the chess piece-That part was just so BADASS to me!:word:

Lois looking at the "S" while talking to the Blur-there was something so iconic and special about that moment.

The Red Queen's brief appearence-I thought it might be Martha, but those legs are too sexy to belong to Mama Kent.:cwink: I'm glad the whole Checkmate storyline is being pushed forward though.

The Bad:

Chloe/Tess-Not really bad just a reminder of how Clark is assuming everything's okay between him and Zod by not taking any action to stop him if anything goes wrong.:whatever:

Overall, I liked it and kept me engaged. While I was afraid that Clois was about to pulla Clana on us, I like how Clark and Lois are developing in their relationship. Lois is caught between the Blur and Clark Kent like the comics and she doesn't know who means more to her. It will be interesting to see how all of it turns out.

who else loved how bold and bright clark's S shield looked tonight. i really loved that.

I did. But what I lvoed more was the last Blur/Lois scene and Clois scene. There was angst but it wasn't Clana overdramatic angst. It was very heartfelt the conversations between Clark/the Blur and Lois. Lois' confusion and being torn between dedicating her life to helping the Blur to her relationship with Clark was very well written. Clark's reaction was spot on and I loved how he was trying to understand Lois' situation without revealing his secret. It's the kind of writing I would love to see more of on Smallville, not to mention Erica and Tom were top notch!

totally i really enjoy how they are writing and handling lois and clark. its alot better then the constant drama that lana and clark was.

Add me to the camp of people that loved this ep.

The Red Queen's gotta be an entirely new character.

Those legs don't belong to Martha Kent.

How can you be so sure! Martha is full of surprises! lol

when Martian Manhunter first appeared on Smallville his face structure didn't look like Phil Morris, it just helped to move the story alone. Martha, having senator connections does seem like a logical choice, but we will see.

i really do doubt its martha, tess, or chloe as some folks are thinking. it will probably end up being some random new character.

My only two beefs with the episode were in the Chloe/Tess scene and the strange editing after Clark shattered the hologram screen/thing. Yeah, maybe Maxwell just said "**** it," and bolted, but from the way it was shot he was there one minute and outside the next. I dunno, maybe it was my vicodin kicking.

yeah I'm a bit confused about Tess, if she's on the run why does she go to places were it would be first place her assassins would find her.

But all signs to me show its still 2010 and in april/mayish.
Then you're clearly not listening to the show itself properly. It said, as in actual lines of dialogue, that a year has passed since "Kandor", and at least 8 months since "Idol".

The show is set in 2011, as the Kandorians had already been on Earth for months by "Kandor", making that episode likely set in early 2010.
