91st Annual Academy Awards

Speaking of undeserved nominations, Mary Poppins Returns for Best Original Score? Are you kidding me? It was easily the worst part of the movie. And that's saying a lot

My point being, and I thought this was implied but apparently not, that the reason for overlooking other superhero films of equal or greater quality make BP nomination completely hollow because it’s clearly being held to a different standard from the other films.

I also don't agree with this assessment. The academy underwent changes, and movies like Black Panther are benefitting from younger blood that have an Academy vote. This is something past CBMs did not benefit from. I know critics are not something we all agree with, but critics praised Black Panther to an extent Marvel movies don't normally get praised, either. So while to us people who may think of CBMs as our genre, Black Panther is not as high on our lists as people less invested in this genre alone and into cinema in a more brood sense. Black Panther got praise from industry professionals and critics in ways a movie like Avengers: Infinity War, which WE loved, was not being praised. Agree with it or not, that's just how it is.

I think Black Panther earning this is a good sign for future CBMs that it's a possibility. It's only good for superhero films in the future.

It really feels like they're kinda trying to pacify with a lot of these nods, but whatever. I'm thinking Roma may get best pic but I honestly hope BP or Klansman wins just for the reaction.

@Micromind i was talking specifically Best Picture.... which no... absolutely not even close to worthy.
I really doubt that anyone was asking WW to be nominated in Best Picture category (at least here), I want awards to nominated based on merits alone.

The Shape of Water represent everything opposite to an Oscar-bait and still won last year.
Which was a surprise win. I don't see Black Panther getting it. Even if it did win it would be seen only as a political and face-saving move after #oscarssowhite a few years ago.

It's funny the people who are pretending to be "woke" about BP getting a nom are missing that I think only 4 women of color have been nominated for Best Actress in the last 10 years.

That says way more to me then BP's nom

Whilst I don’t disagree that younger blood may have changed things I’m doubtful this is going to mean a sudden turn of fortune for future superhero films. Anyway, what’s done is done. In all honesty it hasn’t been the best year for films in general so if they were ever going to throw the comic community a bone it was this one.

I knew it was low but not 4 in 10 years low.

Widows wasn't that great, but I was hoping Viola Davis would get another nom. That totally fizzled.

I think we all know why black panther got best picture nom

Eighth Grade, Claire Foy, and Burning shutout. Boo. Yay for Mirai and Cold War's directing nomination

Did mid90s get a nod for anything? I actually appreciated Jonah Hill's attempt there.

Because it gives Young black People a lot of Inspiration, that they could even be heroes too and be in the middle of the Spotlight?
We saw hundret times the slave and racism-victim roles here, I'm happy this one made it.

Besides that, maybe it is now more easier for the next years.

Not surprised at all. TSOW and Three Billboards were the 2 frontrunners last year for best picture. It was between those 2 films.

"I don't see Black Panther getting it". LMAO dude, Panther getting a nomination is basically its award. It's not gonna win, that's a fact and everyone knows it.

And with you mentioning the love it got compared to other superhero films that also reminds me that like you said it was loved by all three sections of the industry which a lot of the other nominees can't say. It was loved by the industry pros, the audience AND the critics. I don't think you can say that about half of the others. I think you can say that about A Star is Born and probably Blackkklansman too IMO. Maybe Green Book, but i haven't really heard the normal joes thought on that film. The rest hit 1 or 2 of those sections. I've seen so much crap like Extremely loud and Incredibly Close get nominated while being hated by most people, regular joes and critics. Movies getting in just because it was "supposed to" (for example I loved "Vice" but judging how others felt about it, it's here because it was supposed to be.) To me Black Panther getting in is a massive win in so many different ways.
