I really, REALLY hate the whole "Oscar Bait" thing. It's turned into the same sort of trend as complaining about jump scares or CGI. Oscar Bait is SUPPOSED to refer to movies made to win awards but were never invested in actual heart or real quality film-making. It's turned into a "genre" used to attack traditional movies. Movies like Green Book, Roma or A Star is Born are in no way less deserving simply because they aren't "high concept". The Academy certainly has issues with recognizing genre films but it does no one any good to disparage great work just because it's "traditional".Black Panther's nomination is a token one, whether or not you agree it deserves to be there. Unfortunately it has no chance of winnning because it's going to Oscar bait like A Star Is Born or one of the others like Green Book or Roma. Maybe BlacKkKlansman.
Whilst I don’t disagree that younger blood may have changed things I’m doubtful this is going to mean a sudden turn of fortune for future superhero films. Anyway, what’s done is done. In all honesty it hasn’t been the best year for films in general so if they were ever going to throw the comic community a bone it was this one.
MPR for score lol
Everything I’ve heard about the music from Mary Poppins says it’s forgettable.
When they snub anything that isn't traditional then it means anything that is traditional is more likely to get a nomination. It doesn't matter if the movie is good or not. If it gets the right praise from the right people it is guaranteed an Oscar nomination. Anything that is as good or better but fails to be traditional enough is only given a nomination to appear like they aren't just after a certain type of film. Things like Black Panther aren't going to win. They get nominated and that's good enough.I really, REALLY hate the whole "Oscar Bait" thing. I can’t believe we live in a world where a slightly better than average Marvel movie has been nominated for Best Picture and The Dark Knight was not (yes, I know the rules were different, but the fact remains!). Also, Black Panther, Bohemian Rhapsody and Vice over If Beale Street Could Talk? Really, Academy???
Oh well, at least my two faves of the season got the most nominations. A nice consolation since neither will win the big prize.
I really wanted to like Roma but it just came off too pretentious for my liking.
I have no problem with Black Panther being nominated as it did receive critical acclaim for the way it mixed a social message with blockbuster fare. The story itself was prosaic, but you can't deny that it was a cultural experience for many people which I think is partly what the nomination is about.
Hey, if Crash can win Best Picture...
His films are also extremely recognisable. You watch an Alfonso's scene and you can point out instantly that it's his work. Very much like Taratino or Scorcese.Alfonso remains my fave. He never lets me down. So ****ing talented.
That’s the biggest snub for me too. But I’m happy to see Black Panther and Bohemian Rhapsody get so many noms. They were enjoyable movies, ya snobs!Won’t You Be My Neighbor feels like the biggest snub. Guess it made the Academy feel bad about themselves.
