91st Annual Academy Awards

Poor things.
I feel so sorry for them. Imagine growing up watching a director completely s*** on a character, and not even realize it. The Nolan era was a magical time to be alive and I'd give anything to relive it again.

Really don’t think Black Panther deserves to be the first comic book film to have an Oscar nomination(or the nomination at all) I can easily think of dozens of comic book films released over the years that are way more deserving of that recognition over BP but whatever I’m not going to make a big stink over it. It is what it is.

The only comic book movie Oscar nomination I’m really psyched for is the ‘Into The Spider-Verse’s nomination for best animated film. I can’t think of a more deserving film that this. And I’m pleasantly surprised it even got nominated considering Phil Lord & Chris Miller’s previous animated project ‘The Lego Movie’ got notably snubbed years ago - so I kind of got the impression they wouldn’t nominate animated features based on pre-existing properties but I guess the Oscars couldn’t ignore how good this one was. Fingers crossed for it to win.

And I gotta say if the Best Animated category didn’t exist and animated films could be nominated along side the live-action movies for the ‘Best Picture’ category then I would gladly take the groundbreaking Into Spider-Verse over the middle-of-the-road Black Panther for the best picture nomination any day of the week! Into The Spider-Verse deserves to be the first comic book movie to be nominated for a best picture over BP, imo.

Raiders of the Lost Ark was nominated for Best Picture back in the day.

Right. And much as it's probably one of my top 3 favorite films ever, it...shouldn't have been.

Empire Strikes Back? Nah. Jaws? Nah. Terminator 2? Nah. The Dark Knight? Nah.

And they're all pretty seriously superior movies to Panther. This just reeks of pander-y do-gooder bull**** for a pat on the back for being on the woke train or whatever. I dunno, just comes off so cheap.

What, Captain Marvel turns out to be a better-made movie than BP and we throw a nom its way next year too, due to being inspiring to women or whatever? Should Wonder Woman have got a nom? It's arguably in the ballpark of being as solid a movie as Panther was, Panther's closer to that than the Nolan or Mangold comic stuff. And WW ticked the representation box too.

His films are also extremely recognisable. You watch an Alfonso's scene and you can point out instantly that it's his work. Very much like Taratino or Scorcese.

I can't do that with Nolan, Spielberg or other wlite directors.

haha good one :lmao:

Kind of surprised Crazy Rich Asians failed to get any nominations but the Oscars can only put some much minority material up for consideration.

Just because they weren’t born then, doesn’t mean they don’t have access to it.

By that token, no kids born after 1940 have seen The Wizard of Oz.
lol true, but these kids with their short attention spans with their Fortnite and what not. Get off my lawn.

There was an Oscar push for Wonder Woman.

I don't prescribe to this line of thought. Blockbusters are not a lesser art form. Regardless if your movie is about a man dying of cancer or a teenage wizard, it's all about the quality of the movie itself. The one with the teenage wizard is not inherently inferior because it chose to be about a teenage wizard. That's just mental gymnastics so you can devalue those as movies. It's BS. I don't believe that at all. It's the movie is good enough, it should be there.

Random thought: It’s kind of funny to me that Empire is often regarded as the best of the Star Wars films but ‘A New Hope’(the film Empire is viewed as superior to) remains the only Star Wars film to be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.

My mother, the only person in our home who saw Cold War is absolutely furious about women from Roma getting in and Kulig missing lol

Also in her own words they should have push for Kot because he is hot :lmao:

Did Annihilation get a nod for something? I haven't checked the full list.

LOL...people kill with this "deserve" stuff when it comes to these arbitrary awards. Hell I recall someone last year in the BP forum saying BP didn't "desrve" to be a billion dollar film. This quote from another forum pretty much sums it up, IMO.

The nerds that are raging about B.P's Best Pic nomination (which I learned about 5 minutes ago!) are
raging precisely because the film is being recognized not only for its quality but for cultural significance that movies like Dark Knight and Logan DON'T have.

Nerd Culture HATE HATE HATES being reminded about culture and diversity issues and we've seen the pushback and upset over servicing a larger audience for years now, so I'm not surprised that there's a interwebz meltdown going on now.

Like MOS mentioned, by every objective measure we have The Black Panther movie is not just a hit but phenomenon, but objective measures aren't enough for gatekeeping nerds and kind of never have been.

To a hilarious degree.

Black Panther nominated for best picture? Not to gloat - looks like someone was right.

I'd say I agree with all of these being at or near the top.

With the exception of Christopher Robin for VFX. I LOVED that movie and it's one of my favorites of the year, while the VFX were good they were basic and not ground-breaking.

At least Spider-verse got there for animated film, and wasn't snubbed like the Lego Movie was. Think it was snubbed for score and sound design, though.

Royally pissed about Won't You Be My Neighbor, though.

People have been predicting it for months so....a lot of people were right.

Those people similarly have something to gloat about. Those who said it would get nominated were quickly dismissed by so many. So yeah - all who said it can gloat.

It'll get snubbed though - every single year without fail it goes to Disney even if Disney doesn't have the best animated film (the Lego & How To Train Your Dragon 2 year).
